Marco Pignataro

Italian born Marco Pignataro is a multi-talented saxophone player and composer whom maintains a very active international schedule of concerts, recordings and clinics. Marco has shared stages with artists such as Eddie Gomez, Jon Faddis, Billy Hart, John Patitucci, Danilo Perez and George Garzone, amongst many. Currently, he is also a member of the Eddie Gomez Quintet. Together with Danilo Perez, Marco currently leads the Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI), the premiere jazz center of musical creativity at Berklee College of Music in Boston. His latest CD "Sofia's Heart", was produced by jazz legend Eddie Gomez and recorded with a stellar group including Gomez and Billy Drummond.

Devin Roth is a pianist and composer originally from British Columbia Canada. He is currently working on a master in Jazz Composition at New England Conservatory. The Devin Roth Quintet features Andrew Van-Tassel on alto sax, Jon Kenney on trombone, Ehud Ettun on bass, Devin Roth on piano and Steve Wilkinson on drums. The group will perform adventurous original compositions and reckless arrangements of jazz standards.

Danilo Pérez ’88, Artistic Director

The Grammy Award–winning pianist and composer Danilo Pérez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. In just over a decade, his distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz, covering the music of the Americas, folkloric, and world music, has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences. Whether leading his own ensembles or touring with renowned jazz masters (Wayne Shorter, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy), Pérez is making a decidedly fresh imprint on contemporary music, guided, as always, by his love for jazz. Born in Panama in 1965, Pérez went to Berklee in the 1980s and has led his own groups since the early 1990s. As a bandleader, he has earned three Grammy nominations for his ebullient and innovative recordings. Pérez serves as the ambassador of goodwill for Unicef, cultural ambassador of Panama, president and founder of the Panama Jazz Festival, and a faculty member at Berklee College of Music. He has worked as a music educator for more than 20 years.
Marco Pignataro, Managing Director

Marco Pignataro is a multi-talented saxophonist, composer, educator, and jazz columnist. A native of Bologna, Italy, Pignataro has performed extensively across Europe and the Americas, sharing stages and clinics with artists such as Eddie Gomez, Oscar Stagnaro, Danilo Pérez, Arturo Sandoval, Ray Vega, Kenwood Dennard, Antonio Sanchez, Paquito D'Rivera, Billy Drummond, Clark Terry, Billy Hart, and Jon Faddis. Pignataro has, until recently, been the director of the Jazz and Caribbean Music Department and Jazz Saxophone chair at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. At the conservatory, he developed the jazz saxophone curriculum, cofounded the bachelor of music in jazz and Caribbean music studies, and founded and directed the CMPR Jazz Faculty Ensemble and the CMPR Jazz Festival. His column, Style & Influence, was regularly featured in the quarterly magazine Jazz Improv. Pignataro was elected as an IAJE Executive Board Member of the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE), where he served as the first IAJE Latin America Representative and founder and president of the IAJE Chapter of Puerto Rico, the IAJE Latin American Ensemble, and the IAJE Puerto Rico Big Band. He is a RICO Performing Artist, as well as an endorser for Mauriat saxophones and the Applied Microphone Technology Wireless System.

Vibraphonist/drummer Ryan Kowal has been making waves in Rhode Island for a few years now playing with a variety of different groups including Interplay, Dusty Frames, and California Smile, but is now venturing into his own territory. With a new solo album, Fossils In Time, Ryan is bursting into the Boston area scene.

Bernstein's compositions for violin and voice -- equal parts
avant-garde jazz, spoken word, and minimalist groove -- are joined by
Takeishi's expressive mastery on the drums.

“Beat poets used jazz as a backdrop for their prose but their approach
was more parallel than integrative and more deferential than
symbiotic. While Unearthish invites that comparison, violinist/poet
Sarah Bernstein has instead created compositions that are post-Beat
holistic works of art. Her muse is more the performance poetry of
Hedwig Gorski than Allen Ginsberg's Howl set to a soundtrack of Miles
or Trane. Bernstein attacks a diverse array of subjects with staccato
jibes and jabs that can require some interpretation. "War" is "fear
within a square" while "Normality" is feeling that escalates into
insanity and is then transformed into normality. Her gift though is
the exquisite interlacing of the rhythm and feel of her words with the
rhythm and feel of the music. Bernstein's violin is also a versatile
voice and she uses some electronics to shape its sound. Percussionist
Satoshi Takeishi is Bernstein's rhythmical partner on these duets and
he has never sounded more at home. His multiple percussive timbres
result in a broad, at times regal, sonic gestalt that is worldly yet
personal. The ironically titled opening track "It's Over" includes
beautifully pure marimba tones, which are a wonderfully earthy
addition to Takeishi's usual exotic palette. He provides a solid base
for Bernstein's soaring violin and vocals while also displaying his
own unique voicings. "Possession" has Bernstein dispassionately
ticking off weighty concepts to a linear pizzicato/percussive march.
The poetic faux-rocker "And I will" includes clever lyrical word play
and a middle that would not be out of place as part of a Jim Morrison
soliloquy. Two of three instrumental tracks enable the musicians to
bob, weave and blend in a less constrained atmosphere while "Three
Wishes" shines the spotlight on Bernstein's interesting solo harmonic

Jorge Luis Borges is considered one of the most important figures in Latin American literature. To celebrate the life and work of this magnificent poet, the Secretary of Culture of Tucumán (Argentina) commissioned Argentinean composer Julio Santillán the creation of a show. It was premiered in 2005.
The concert features a selection of seven poems (songs), two short stories and an instrumental piece performed by vocalist Sofía Tosello and guitarist/singer Julio Santillán. The songs alternate with short fragments (in spanish with optional english translation) taken from other poems and prologues by Borges. Santillán composed the music utilizing south american folk rhythms such as: milonga, huayno and saya.Un Instante was performed in many festivals and venues including: George Enescu Festival (Bucharest, Romania), Jazz Gallery (New York, USA), Casa América (Barcelona, Spain), La Escalera de Jacob (Madrid, Spain), Art Base (Brussels, Belgium) and Teatro O. Caviglia (Tucumán, Argentina)

The George Lernis Jazz Quartet just released their first album called "Shapes of Nature". "Shapes of Nature, the debut recording of George Lernis Jazz Quartet, introduces the distinctive music of the talented drummer-percussionist-composer. Citing the last Tony Williams as his primary model for his modernistic approach to drumming, Lernis expands up on the restrictive role of timekeeper, playing a naturally flowing amalgamation of shifting rhythms the distinguishes his work from more typical mainstream jazz while maintaining an appealing sound. The melodies of the compositions were greatly influenced by middle-eastern scales. Like the Shapes of Nature, this album serves as a canvas of variform sounds, colors and rhythms."
