The Fearless Combo speaks the language of funky jazz in a fresh and original dialect. They play the soundtrack of your life with wit, intellect, and impeccable timing. As you wander from day to day, slashing madly into the world’s unforgiving massiveness, the Combo is there by your side with a happy song, a slice of pizza, and wild words of encouragement.

7pm - 9pm

9:00 PM Kafana/Jeni Jol

Kafana.jpg

The all-acoustic ensemble Kafana derives its name from a common term in the Balkans, meaning a place to happily gather to eat, drink, and listen to music. Kafana, the band, developed its repertoire over three years of weekly performances at a restaurant in Somerville, MA where it interpreted music from the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey. The ensemble now seeks to combine elements from these musical cultures with that of it's players to create modern American folk music: a cultural mashup of styles that is respectful of the traditions it draws on from without being musically shackled by authenticity. Kafana's new repertoire of Balkan and Turkish-influenced original compositions (much of it written by Tev Stevig) is a further development of this idea that continues to explore the borders of both American and world music.

10:00 PM Dan Rosenthal Quintet

Daniel Rosenthal Quintet
featuring Charlie Kohlhase - alto and bari saxophones, Rick Stone - alto sax, Jef Charland - bass, Austin McMahon, DR - trumpet. Performing original compositions and a few by Monk.

"The wonderful trumpeter and composer, Daniel Rosenthal - member of the Either/Orchestra, whose excellent cd Lines was one of last year's highlights of the Boston scene brings a quintet to the Lily Pad... Rosenthal writes twisty, surprising, elegant forms that seem to draw equally from Ornette Coleman and country music, and a live set can include a few Monk covers."
-Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix

"With his patient, rounded phrasing, Daniel is part of a generation of players following the trail blazed by producer Manfred Eicher, whose ECM Records has proven that jazz can be equally powerful with the open, organic sounds of a pastoral setting."
-Geoffrey Himes, DownBeat Magazine
