"With his latest effort, Argentine pianist/composer Pablo Ablanedo pronounces a sense of joy. In the liners the artist emphasizes that this work "alludes to the happiness of creation." To that end, Ablanedo and his octetdisseminate a set of emotive musings via a Spanishtinged luster combined with polychordal horn charts and more." (4 ½ stars)
Glenn Astarita, Down Beat Magazine (US)
"Argentine composer Pablo Ablanedo makes a disarmingly gentle but firm debut notable more for his ascetic, introspective writing than his low-profile piano. This band plays the through-composed and chamber-like pieces understatedly rather than in-your-face, slowly unfolding a mature, inclusive world vision." (4 stars)
Fred Bouchard, Down Beat Magazine (US)
"...be sure that Pablo Ablanedo's work has its own personality: you will be pleased to listen and listen to From Down There.”
Claude Colpaert, Jazz Hot Magazine (France)
"It would be a mistake to pigeonhole the pianist/composer Pablo Ablanedo as a "Latin jazz artist”: the lush, complex weave of his writing for octet on the new Alegría (Fresh Sounds) has as much to do with Gil Evans as with the tangos of Ablanedo's fellow Argentine, Astor Piazzolla."
Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix (US)
www.pabloablanedo.com
Pablo Ablanedo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is a composer, pianist and music teacher. In 1996, he graduated with a diploma in Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music, where he took part in the last courses taught by the legendary trumpet player Herb Pomeroy. Pablo’s artistic development owes much to the Argentinean pianist Susana Bonora, who he has been working with since the 80’s. In 1999, he joined forces with a diverse group of Jazz players to form the Pablo Ablanedo Octet. In the decade since, the group has recorded three albums on Fresh Sound New Talent Records. From Down There (2001) and Alegría (2004) received 4 and 4½ stars, respectively, in Down Beat Magazine, and JazzMan Magazine (France) gave the multi-artist project The Sound of New York Underground (2004) its highest rating CHOC. Pablo’s work has also been commissioned by Paquito D’Rivera to be performed by Germany’s NDR Big Band. He is currently working on a new album with his Octet. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with his wife, the painter Lucile Chaurin Ablanedo (www.lucilechaurinablanedo.com) and their basset hound Tosca.

http://www.myspace.com/samanthapreis
Samantha Preis was born March 10, 1988 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Raised in a small town, Samantha grew up continuously surrounded by art and music. At a very young age, family and friends began to take notice of Samantha's unique mind and immense creativity. Always involved in music and art, Samantha had a tremendous sense of self, and always knew she would one day find a career doing what she loved. As a toddler, she began to explore her talent in art and won countless awards for her creativity. At 9, Samantha took on the piano. It was then when she began writing songs. Known for her powerful voice, Samantha has performed numerous times at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Berklee College of Music. After graduating early from high school, she catapulted into the music industry and spent several months recording and collaborating in Los Angeles with well-known producers and musicians. This was only the beginning for Samantha. In September of 2006, she began her freshman year at Berklee College of Music as a Songwriting major. Bringing forth tremendous opportunity, Berklee introduced her to new and talented people, as well as new and useful techniques. Berklee also gave her the chance to live in Boston, which she still feels a very strong attachment to. She recently graduated in 2010. Traveling, a true love for Samantha, has also brought her great opportunity. Before 20, she had already travelled to several countries to share her creative voice.
10:00 PM Animatronique

Similar to instrumental artists Jim O'Rourke, Kaki King, and Greg Davis, Animatronique's music is both atmospheric and compelling in nature. While solo acoustic guitar compositions are the nucleus of the music, the songs are furnished with haunting samples, ethereal electric guitars, and dynamic percussive elements that combine to create elaborate soundscapes.
The debut album "Stasis" is a collection of songs that run the gamut from peaceful and introspective to distorted and pugnacious. Some moments are poetic, with lyrical melodies and lush instrumentation, while others are noise-laden and aggressive. The unifying factor is the cinematic quality at the heart of each piece.

KIT DEMOS- bass - was born in Bristol, Connecticut, raised in New York, Coastal Connecticut and Maine has a broad and varied musical career. He worked for over a decade playing bouzouki and singing professionally with a traditional Greek music group Opa! Opa! all the while performing and composing for free jazz groups large and small. A classical and jazz performance student since the age of 6 through college, he has built and designed his own analog synthesizers from the component level, studied physics, electrical engineering, and modern performance with Portland Maine based trio Mystic Out-bop Review, started his own record label, and continues to develop his bop influenced jazz chops with an evolving extended bass technique. In addition to teaching student ensemble workshops, he can be heard on Konnex, Aria Arts Recordings, and Skycap Records with Jeff Platz, John Mclellan, Daniel Carter, Crank Sturgeon, Luther Grey, Jack Wright, Blaise Siwula, Jim Hobbes, Timo Shanko, and R.A. Fish to name a few. Kit teamed with John Mclellan to develop new and unique rhythm concepts for Jeff Platz's group at the Munster International Jazz Festival (Germany).
JOHN McLELLAN- drums- was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and raised in Massachusetts, has a resume that is expansive and varied, including work with Joe and Mat Maneri, Roswell Rudd, Bern Nix, Roy Campbell, William Parker, Ken Vandermark, Denman Marony, Ben Monder, and the Either/Orchestra. JIM HOBBS - alto sax. After two decades as an underground legend on the Boston music scene, alto saxophonist and composer Jim Hobbs is beginning to gain wider recognition as one of the most vibrant artists currently active in jazz and contemporary music. He has been described as "one of his generation's most gifted altoists" (Troy Collins, AllAboutJazz.com), and hailed for his "superb writing his vision that mixes tempos, time signatures, harmonies, and timbre: an exciting voice" (Steve Loewy, Cadence Magazine). The Boston Phoenix's Jon Garelick writes "there's no one with a more individual sound and conception than Hobbs: strangled and crying one minute, soft and bluesy the next, or just plain Johnny Hodges purdy" while Time Out New York's Steve Dollar advises "he occasionally grows meditative, dropping into a knuckle-dragging register for a burly groan or puffing out little cirrus clouds that float by like melancholic memories. Then the daydream dissolves, and it's time for rump-rolling, go see 'em with someone you fuck." Best known for his long-time leadership of the Fully Celebrated Orchestra, Jim Hobbs also leads the Jim Hobbs Quartet, Jim Hobbs & the Hobbettes, and The Brothers of Heliopolis, an eleven-piece big band. He has collaborated with acclaimed figures of the jazz avant-garde and stalwarts of the Boston music scene, including Fred Hopkins, Joe Morris, Matthew Shipp, Fred Ho, the Jazz Composers Alliance, Bill Lowe, Taylor Ho Bynum, Mary Halvorson, Gerard Faroux, Laurence Cook, Timo Shanko, Allan Chase, Forbes Graham, and Luther Gray. Other credits range from calypso legend Mackie Burnette, to the alternative hip-hop group Jasper and the Prodigal Suns (including a run on Geffen Records in the early '90s), to his work with the Death's Head Quartet, featuring vocalist Seth Putnam from the notorious grind core band Anal Cunt. Recent recordings featuring Hobbs include The Story of Mankind (NotTwo Records) and Lawnmower West (Clean Feed). Hobbs was born and raised in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where he received many awards and accolades as a young saxophonist including selection to the Indiana All-State Jazz Band and a scholarship to Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee he studied saxophone with Joe Viola and earned a degree in Jazz Composition. In 1987 he founded the Fully Celebrated Orchestra with bassist Timo Shanko and drummer Ray Anthony. They became know for their energetic style, appearing mostly at Boston's many rock clubs and survived by busking in the Boston Commons and Harvard Square, gaining recognition as "Boston's best jazz group" from both The Boston Globe and The Boston Phoenix. Along with later members including cornettist Taylor Ho Bynum and drummer Django Carranza, the FCO has released nine critically acclaimed recordings, including 2009's Drunk on the Blood of the Holy Ones (Aum Fidelity), described as "full of power and intrigue on every level" (Marc Medwin, Dusted) http://www.celebratefully.com/#/about

Berklee Global Jazz Institute
The Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI) is a performance program designed to foster creativity and musicianship through various musical disciplines, with pianist and composer Danilo Pérez as its artistic director. The BGJI provides a comprehensive contemporary music environment where students are given opportunities to explore their creativity to the highest level possible, advance the power of music as a tool for the betterment of society, and connect musical creative thinking with the natural environment.

Danilo Pérez ’88, Artistic Director
The Grammy Award–winning pianist and composer Danilo Pérez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. In just over a decade, his distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz, covering the music of the Americas, folkloric, and world music, has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences. Whether leading his own ensembles or touring with renowned jazz masters (Wayne Shorter, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy), Pérez is making a decidedly fresh imprint on contemporary music, guided, as always, by his love for jazz. 10:00 PM Tectonic Fever
Tectonic Fever was inspired by the recordings of Sonny Sharrock-- rock guitar in a jazz setting. We cover a few of Sonny's compositions, but this is mainly an original project for which I write. TF is a rotating cast of characters and I am very fortunate to work this evening with some of Boston's finest improvisers:
