10:00 PM Kevin Harris Project

KevinHarris.jpg

When the unmistakable musical influences of Thelonious Monk, Danilo Perez, and Charlie Parker intersect with J.S. Bach, Scott Joplin, and the folkloric rhythms of Cuba, could one possibly conceptualize the celebration that occurs at that intersection? Boston-based jazz pianist Kevin Harris plays a distinctive combination of traditional and contemporary music that seeks to explore such a crossroads. Jazztimes magazine says “Harris possesses a spare style and gentle touch” and the Boston Globe quotes that “Harris has worked to refine the creative push and pull of a music that demands it.” Among his most recent and upcoming collaborations are Avishai Cohen, Steve Langone, Eddie Gomez Marco Pignataro, Carlos Averhoff, Richie Barshay, Ben Street, Ralph Peterson, Ralph Bowen, Jason Palmer, Jerry Bergonzi, Cecil McBee, Bob Moses, and Terri Lyne Carrington. Harris is currently on the faculty at Berklee College of Music where he teaches jazz piano and summer advanced theory classes and piano labs. Committed to the community and to getting youth involved in music, Kevin has also conducted local and international clinics in both public and private schools throughout the USA, Caribbean, and Europe. In 2000 Harris started five separate band programs with help from “Arts In Progress,” a Boston based arts organization.

The wife-husband team from Japan was simply brilliant. Though their work has a fair amount of compositional structure, it consistently reveals a wide-open and unpredictable nature that makes its performance a thrilling ride for the listener.”―Steve Feeney, Portland Press Herald

“Our pick for the best of the fest… Fujii has a way of pulling the most powerful and expressive sounds out of the piano… And the pair is better than the sum of its parts. Intuition and communication like that is rare.” ― Adam Kinner, The Montreal Gazette

Since 1997, Tamura and Fujii’s powerful collaboration has enlightened and engaged listeners. Their repertoire ranges from total improvisation to Tamura’s deeply beautiful, world-music influenced compositions and Fujii’s compositions with their complicating meter, line, and harmony. With just two instruments, they can sound like anything from a quiet Japanese traditional song to the blast of a crazy large ensemble. They have wowed audiences at jazz festivals in London, Vancouver, and Montreal, and other around the world.

6:00 PM Gabriela Martinez

Gabriela Martina

Gabriela Martina .jpg

Incredible songwriting, arranging and musicianship, smooth flowing vocals, passion, honesty, and soul. Gabriela Martina and company delivers all this and more on Curiosity, her first offering to a music world in waiting. Featuring the talented lineup of Alex Bailey on drums, Kyle Miles on bass, Jussi Reijonen on guitar, and pianist Jiri Nedoma, this May 2010 release is a powerful collection of Gabriela's thoughts on many aspects of the human experience.
On "Ain't Nobody", smoky, sultry vocals glide over a tight rhythm section in this soulful declaration of love and appreciation. Contemplative guitar chords join with playful vocals to draw us completely into "Like a Seed in the Earth", during the opening lines. Add to this, lush harmonies supported by the perfect percussion and piano accents, and you end up feeling all the colors of the emotional rainbow. Growth, love, joy, longing, despair, and
...curiosity.
The upbeat "Narcissus" reflects a journey of inner-strength, freedom and liberation. While "My Best Smile for You" comes across as more of a sassy, funky reassurance of friendship, love, and steadfastness. "Catch Me a Star", rounds out this musical experience with a passionate, tribal groove which are a perfect match to the warm, rich vocals of Ms. Gabriela Martina.

7:30 PM Unfulfilled Desires

feb 9.jpg

http://lily-pad.net/movabletype/mt.cgi?__mode=view&_type=entry&blog_id=1Unfulfilled Desires is a genre-defying group of eclectic musicians. You can call them “jazz-funk-rock” or maybe “new fusion.” The label doesn’t matter – just listen and you’ll find yourself drawn into a power-packed, contagiously positive vibe that’s always pushing the edge. These tireless risk-takers have been turning heads across the three continents where they’ve been performing for over ten years. Every tune they play – whether it’s one of their own take-you-by-surprise, sometimes quirky compositions, or they’re paying tribute to a loved jazz great – they always communicate something way beyond just inspired, inventive music. It’s really a spiritual thing…like tuning in to a higher frequency… check it out and you’ll see for yourself.

On a recent European tour, Time Out London described them as “a hard-driving jazz-funk quintet playing virtuosic jazz and jazz-rock” and chose them as “Hot Pick of the Week.” And Evan Bellaff, radio host at WBAI in NYC, defined them “a band of musical explorers and fearless risk takers who creatively combine the richness and sophistication of jazz, and the soul and vitality of funk with the uncompromising attitude of rock & roll.”

Unfulfilled Desires tours in the US and Europe and into the Middle East. In addition to regular shows in western MA (where most of the musicians live), and some of New York City and Boston’s most respected clubs, they’ve played sold-out performances in Israel’s top jazz venues and were chosen for an international band residency at famed Paris club Le Baiser Sale. UD has shared the stage with contemporary jazz greats Mike Stern, The Bad Plus, Oz Noy Trio, and master guitarist David Fiuczynski, Fareed Haque with Garaj Mahal, and blues great Jon Cleary. They’ve released four CDs: Live at the Iron Horse (2002), Enlightened Dog (2005), Punk Funk (2008), and Plugged (2011).

Andrew Cohen (drums) began playing drums in his teens while living in Rome. Rodrigo Tarraza (sax, electronic wind, flute) is a Chilean-born, classically trained professional flutist. He toured, performed, and recorded with many international orchestras before moving to sax and electronic wind and playing bossa nova, improvisational jazz, and avant-garde music. In 1995, he founded Ensemble Les Inegales, which released several recordings in Europe. Rodrigo has taught at the San Francisco Conservatory, the New England Conservatory, and several universities in South America. 10:00 PM The Wee Trio CD Release

www.theweetrio.com

The Wee Trio is: James Westfall (vibes), Dan Loomis (bass) + Jared Schonig (drums)

Wee Trio.jpg

Roughly one year ago, guitarist Cliff Hines brought together a cadre of New Orleans’ finest musicians to perform the music of David Bowie. Among those assembled was James Westfall, vibraphonist/composer and one third of The Wee Trio. This idea of performing Bowie’s music coincided with the groundwork for the band’s third album. What followed was the recording of Ashes To Ashes – A David Bowie Intraspective, a deep exploration into the eclectic icon’s music, and the band’s follow up to their first two critically acclaimed albums, Capitol Diner Vol. 1, and Capitol Diner Vol. 2 Animal Style.

After these two powerhouse albums, comprised of mostly original material (plus Nirvana’s “About a Girl”, Aphex Twin’s “Avril 14” and Sufjan Stevens’ “Flint”), it became clear that the band was eager to lace their many Wee Trio-isms into the works of an outside composer. With Westfall being no stranger to Bowie’s music, and bassist Dan Loomis and drummer Jared Schonig quickly realizing the treasure trove they had found in the thin white duke’s work, the trio dove headfirst into his vast, diverse repertoire to select six songs that span Bowie’s musical universe: “Battle For Britain” (from Earthling), “Queen Bitch” (from Hunky Dory), “The Man Who Sold The World” (from The Man Who Sold The World), “Ashes to Ashes” (from Scary Monsters), “1984” (from Diamond Dogs) and “Sunday” (from Heathen).

“We went through long list of composers, and in the end, David Bowie represented the biggest range of musical possibilities.  Going from folk to rock to glam to art soundscape to electronica, he has covered more aesthetic ground than perhaps any other pop artist.  Jazz being the aesthetically voracious art form that it is (and one that is given to perpetual hybridizing of styles just as Bowie was), we saw that Bowie's music gave us that best chance to represent all the sides of our sound as a band,” explained Loomis.

For David Bowie fans and jazz fans alike, Ashes To Ashes will exceed your expectations. The Wee Trio manages to reimagine Bowie’s music while staying true to its spirit and energy. They simultaneously show their talent as jazz musicians while performing the music from the perspective of true Bowie fans. The Wee Trio also managed to showcase the versatility of Bowie’s compositions and how amazingly well they transferred into a new medium. Simply put, they breathe new life into these timeless Bowie classics.

More on The Wee Trio:
Hailed by critics as “the ambassadors of the genre’s future,” praised for “stirring up jazz you don’t have to be old to enjoy," and credited for delivering “lightning in a bottle,” The Wee Trio, featuring James Westfall (vibes), Dan Loomis (bass) and Jared Schonig (drums), exploded onto the scene in 2008 with their debut CD, Capitol Diner, Vol. 1 (which brilliantly captured the energy, eclecticism and excellence of the band’s birthplace, Brooklyn, NY). In March, 2010 the Trio released the much-anticipated follow up recording, Capitol Diner Vol. 2 Animal Style, an album that was recorded at the famous Piety Street Studios in New Orleans (studio of choice for Dave Mathews Band, Cassandra Wilson, Harry Connick Jr., etc), but was built on the road in California during the band’s tour in support of Vol. 1.

From the “oak tree thick bass” (AAJ NY) of Dan Loomis, the “explosiveness” and “fervent audacity” (AllAboutJazz) of Jared Schonig’s drumming to the “fresh excitement” (Icon) and “ultra-chill” (The Boston Herald) of James Westfall’s vibes, the band has an instantly identifiable sound, and the group’s prodigious rapport becomes more prevalent with each recording. Throughout their recorded work The Wee Trio is vigorous and sublime, and in performance the high energy, joy, anticipation and venturesome spirit of the group envelops the audience.

While rooted in jazz The Wee Trio finds ways to break boundaries encompassing their other roots in rock and fusion. Each member is a leader in their own right, but together as The Wee Trio, Westfall, Loomis and Schonig represent one of the highly creative groups pushing jazz and improvised music in exciting and innovative new directions. They now offer their latest creative tour-de-force, Ashes To Ashes – A David Bowie Intraspective.

Tunefoolery and friends will perform music on the theme of Love. Featured musicians are Tunefoolery’s Essex Street Band, as well as Trudi Goodman (vocal and guitar), Jeff Fisher (vocal and guitar), Trio Les Follies featuring Bea McClain, Mark Irwin, and Hannah Davidson along with Theresa Thompson, violin. Tunefoolery has also invited Mali Sastri from the band Jaggery and singer/songwriter Tom Smith to share the stage.

Tunefoolery is a Boston non-profit organization for musicians with psychiatric disabilities or conditions (using this complicated phrase because some people with long-term mental illness don't feel disabled, in part, thanks to being part of Tunefoolery). The group is a loving community of 50 musicians, who play a variety of music in ensembles and as solo acts, and who perform for underserved populations in New England and beyond. Their mission is to provide hope, healing, and purpose to their musicians and to their audiences. In contrast to traditional psychiatric treatment, Tunefoolery focus on abilities instead of disabilities. The group also reaches out to schools and other organizations, educating students about the possibilities of people with psychiatric conditions as a way to fight stigma.

10:00 PM Brian Friedland Sextet

Brian Friedland.jpg

An emotive and bold composer, Friedland's sextet works explore a wide range of atmospheres and creative processes. Compositions for this band such as Kitten Attack, Three Chords of Triumph, and 12 Tone Awesomeness display his willingness to take inspiration from unusual and colorful sources. His music is vividly brought to life and enhanced by a dedicated and accomplished ensemble comprised of trumpeter Vivek Patel, alto saxophonist Rick Stone, trombonist Tim Shneier, bassist Greg Loughman, and Drummer Mike Connors. While the band’s playing is deeply rooted in jazz traditions, the music is enlivened by unusual stylistic juxtapositions ranging from classical minimalism to techno.  Regardless of the style he is touching on, Friedland's writing displays relentless creativity and a penchant for memorable melodies.  Grammy nominated composer, USC faculty member, and musical collaborator Kim Richmond describes Friedland's music as "not only professional quality material, but inspirationally crafted, an excellent and interesting mix of art works. He shows his dedication towards creating and performing new music."

10:00 PM Soar Trio

Soar Trio’s sound encompasses a whole world of music-making that is part erudite composition, part virtuosic improvisation, part populist affability; challenging music that still manages to be charming

and thought provoking to audiences beyond initiated New Music fans. Melodic modernism, minimalist economy and elemental Free Jazz all inform Soar Trio’s direction. The group combines musicians of

disparate ages and locales that have an affinity for taking innovative music directly to the people.

Thollem McDonas is a pianist from the Bay Area who has toured almost non-stop around the world for the past several years. He has a conservatory background (studying with Lou Harrison), but left t

hat world to perform his own music. The recent recipient of a Meet The Composer grant, Thollem was also commissioned by The Limon Dance Company for a large-scale piece in commemoration of their

50th year anniversary. He was invited to perform the late works of Claude Debussy on the piano on which they were written, as well as his own creations with double-bassist Stefano Scodanibbio. This

was released as the first album ever recorded on Debussy's piano. Thollem’s other CDs include solo piano works, large ensemble pieces and various collaborations- on American and European labels

such as ESP Disk, Imirani, Saravah, Creative Sources and Edgetone.

Skeeter Shelton is one of the most under-recognized saxophonists in free jazz/creative music. His father, drummer Ajaramu Shelton, was a charter member of the AACM who played with Roscoe Mitchell,

Muhal Abrahms, Kalaparusha, Fred Anderson, Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons. He was also raised by AACM organist Ameena Claudine Meyers. Skeeter grew-up around these influences and absorbed a

whole lot of tenor playing. His status as a leading figure in Detroit’s creative music community is undisputed and his obscure national status is due to reticence, not talent. But he hasn’t completely escaped

attention by notable peers- Skeeter has worked with musicians like James Blood Ulmer, Fred Anderson, Faruq Z. Bey, Hakim Jami, Dennis Gonzales and The North Woods Improvisers. He also leads the group

Spectrum 2.

Also based in Detroit, multi-instrumentalist Joel Peterson have performed a wide array of music as a member of groups like Immigrant Suns, The Scavenger Quartet,Odu Afrobeat Orchestra, Xenharmonic Gamelan,

ECFA and in trios and quartets with Faruq Z Bey, Kenneth Green and Michael Carey. As an improviser, he has performed with people like Tatsuya Nakatani, Steve Cohn, Gino Robair, Amy Denio, Burnt Sugar, Luk

Houtkamp, Eugene Chadbourne, Rhys Chatham, Damo Suzuki, Jason Stein, Carl Smith and many others. Besides the double-bass, his primary gigging instrument, Joel also performs on clarinet, oud, qyteli, guitar

and more. From 2004-2008 he ran Bohemian National Home, formerly Detroit’s primary venue for creative arts.

7:00 PM Paul Combs Quintet Plays Tadd Dameron

Tadd23.jpg
"Dameron at 23, courtesy of Down Beat Magazine.

TaddWriting.jpg
TaddWriting: Dameron in 1962

Tadd Dameron was one of the fathers of "Modern Jazz." Close friend of and frequent collaborator with Dizzy Gillespie, he was known on the 1940s as the "architect of bop." His influence extended into the 1950s and 1960s as a mentor of musicians such as Miles Davis and Benny Golson, and a primary influence on composer/arrangers such as Horace Silver, Quincy Jones, Frank Foster, and John LaBarbera, among others. Dameron's biographer, Paul Combs has assembled a quintet dedicated to presenting Tadd's music, much of it either unjustly neglected or previously unknown. Of course, the quintet will be playing Dameron's well-known compositions such as "Good Bait," "Lady Bird," and "If You Could See Me Now," as well.

Saxophonist Paul Combs [www.paulcombs.com] is Tadd Dameron's biographer. His book, Dameronia - the Life and Music of Tadd Dameron, will be at the end of the summer of this year. In his research, he has discovered many previously unknown Dameron compositions, almost all of them more than worthy of addition to the jazz "canon." The veteran saxophonist has performed in the Boston area for the last thirty years, as well as nationally. He has recorded as both a leader and a sideman. His most recent CD is "Paul Combs' Pocket Big Band - Live At Chit Chat," Sea Breeze Jazz SB-3073.

Saxophonist Jim Cameron has performed internationally at jazz clubs, concerts and at festivals around the world, including London, Tokyo, and Vancouver. Jim can be heard on several CDs from such labels as Brownstone, GM and Sea Breeze. He currently divides his time playing in three big bands, Paul Combs' Pocket Big Band, a sextet and various smaller jazz ensembles in the New England area. Hi most recent CD is "Disturbing the Air," Invisible Music IM-2046

Pianist Don Hemwall [http://donhemwall.com/] established himself in the Boston area late 1970s after studying at Berklee and the New England Conservatory. He currently performs with his own trio and quartet, as well as a solo pianist. He is also a charter member of the Pocket Big band and has worked with Paul Combs in several other of his bands. He can be hard on the "Live At Chit Chat" CD, as well as Paul Combs' "Be Bop Christmas Card'" BoMuse Transcriptions BTCD 1004.

Bassist Herman Hampton [http://www.berklee.edu/faculty/detail/herman-hampton] is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music where he teaches in the Ensemble Department. A graduate of both the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Berklee College, he performs extensively in the Boston area not only in jazz, but blues and Latin music, as well. He has performed with Yusef Lateef, Jay McShann, and Archie Shepp. He can be heard on several recordings, including Philippe Le Jeune's "NIght Mist Blues," Black & Blue 701.2.

Drummer Stanley Swann [http://stanleyswann.com] is one of the Boston area's busiest. After 20 years playing drums in various bands in the U.S. Air Force, he quickly established himself on the Boston scene with his virtuosity and versatility. He has been a long time associate of Paul Combs, having recorded two CDs with him. Like others in the band Stanley is also involved in education and is the founder and director of the Lowell Jazz Day Camp. This past fall he toured Russia with Trombonist Ron Wilkins.
