10:00 AM Closing for improvements Laborday weekend

When we reopen on Monday, Labor Day, the changes shouldn't be noticeable upon first glance.

We should have installed a totally new and amazing sound system. Speakers will be up off the floor and the amount of space created by the lack of the monster speakers we have been using for the last 8 years will be substantial. Every part of the system will be brand new.

The mixing board will be an Allen Heath Mix Wizard WZ3 12:2. For the vocalists who have been here and fretted at the lack of effects, fret no more.

Main speakers:
RCF TT-08A, made in Italy and of the highest quality, and matched with a RCF TTS12-A subwoofer, which is designed to go with the speakers.

Next and just as important but invisible to the eye, the piano action will be much improved. New bushing and regulation will result in a much tighter, more precise and even feel. Filing and voicing the hammers will result in a much cleaner sound that will be more uniform form note to note.

I am very excited by this next step in the evolution of the Lily Pad.

Originally formed back in 1971 by tenor-saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman, and drummer Bob Gullotti as an outlet for their free jazz improvisations, The Fringe have entertained and enlightened Boston area jazz audiences for over 30 years. Bassist Appleman left the band in 1985 to become Chairman of the Bass Department at Berklee College and was replaced by veteran bassist John Lockwood.

Along with their impressive tenure with The Fringe, Gullotti, Garzone, and Lockwood are in great demand as session players and have played with many of the greats of contemporary jazz. 7:00 PM ROSETTA TRIO

ablookingatcha.jpg

Memphis-bred Brooklynite bassist/composer Stephan Crump will perform with his unique all-string Rosetta Trio in support of their new Sunnyside Records release, Reclamation. Featuring nine intensely personal compositions including the polyglot “Pernambuco,” a piece commissioned by 92nd St Y and New York Guitar Festival, Reclamation is a declaration of a unique new compositional voice.
The freshness of the compositions is matched by the intimate synergy of the ensemble, first convened on the 2006 release Rosetta that gave the trio its name. Reviewers were ecstatic about the “engaging and sublime meeting” of Crump on acoustic bass with guitarists Liberty Ellman and Jamie Fox. “Here is a string ensemble for the new century!" raved Donald Elfman in All About Jazz NY. Having toured the US and UK and performed together in a varied contexts for years, Rosetta Trio has developed into a formidable unit, sensitively and powerfully rendering Crump’s often profound, sometimes playful and always honest music.

Sherele is an ensemble bringing together musicians from France, Mexico and Argentina. The band plays a Klezmer repertoire, along with original pieces in which we blend Jazz, Rock and Argentinian accents into the Klezmer sound. Faithful to klezmer customs, we absorb, modify and create new melodies and rhythms.
Sherele plays klezmer in a fresh and contemporary way.
We made a cd released in 2008, Oy Mame Shein, Pickles Chiles and Jrein.
Our piece Polka Dot Blues, composed by Nathalie Braux, the clarinet player, was selected by Putumayo Records for its compilation Jazz Around the World, released in 2009.

http://www.frankvignola.com/

Frank Vignola shatters the barriers between popular music and traditional jazz to create a powerful new acoustic string music experience. His amazing virtuosity mixes high-energy, unique renditions of famous classical pieces, great American popular songs and contemporary tunes. An evening with Frank Vignola will captivate, entertain and enthrall any audience! Acoustic guitar music like you've never heard before!

Tickets $15 at the door

Frank is one of the most accomplished, multi-dimensional players walking the planet today. Monster player, composer and improviser, Frank plays proficiently in every genre, from jazz to bluegrass, and works with everyone and their brother. Frank’s pedigree is a mile long, but a quick Google will illustrate why he is considered one of the best on the planet.

Whether he is featured on a Donald Fagen recording, a jam with David Grisman, as Les Paul's right hand man or leading his own groups throughout the years, he has proved himself to be in the elite creating his own unique sound.

Born on suburban Long Island, Vignola was raised in the New York area. The Italian-American started playing the guitar at the age of five and grew up admiring a variety of guitarists. Far from a jazz snob, Vignola never listened to jazz exclusively and was also a major fan of rock, R&B, and pop. The guitarists that he admires range from Django and George Barnes to rock icons like Frank Zappa and Eddie Van Halen. As a young adult, Vignola studied at the Cultural Arts Center of Long Island and went on to enjoy an enormous amount of sideman gigs in the 1980s including recording and touring with the likes of Madonna, Leon Redbone, Ringo Starr as well as coming into his own as a leader in 1988 with his famed Hot Club of France tribute which was hailed in the NY Times as one of the top ten acts in 1988 and forged the way for the many Django Hot Club groups that followed. The New Yorker was 27 when, in 1993, he signed with Concord Jazz and recorded his first Concord session as a leader, Appel Direct. Many more Concord releases followed in the 1990s as well as 3 releases for the Telarc label as co-leader of the group Travelin' Light. The early 2000's found Vignola recording for Acoustic Disc, Hyena Records as well as making featured appearances on Atlantic, Sony and Warner Brothers Records with the likes of Donald Fagen, Queen Latifah, Mark O Connor and Wynton Marsalis. Mr. Vignola has also recorded several DVD's for Mel Bay Records. "Gypsy Jam" features Jimmy Rosenberg and "Favorite Solo's" features Frank with one of his guitar heroes, Bucky Pizzarelli. Frank has written 18 guitar instruction books for Mel Bay Publications and has recorded several CDROM educational products for Truefire.com. He has performed hundreds of clinics and masterclasses at major universities and colleges throughout the country including Julliard and Boston University.

The Lily Pad – Thursday 9/16/2010 7:30pm

Why Thursday? Thursday is the new Friday. People born on Thursdays are fun loving, hard working, love to travel, and occasionally wear purple. Named after Thor, the hammer-wielding-Norse-god-of-thunder, Thursday is also the day of Thanksgiving. Sources tell us that the third Thursday of the month is absolutely the best night to hear beautiful improvised music at the Lily Pad. "The Boston-based vocalist [Melissa Kassel] rarely, if ever, takes the standard approach to standards. Where the typical singer shouts, she might whisper; a passage usually taken quickly, she may stretch out like taffy. Yet it’s all in service to the improvisational moment being shared with her top-notch band: pianist Tom Zicarelli, trumpeter Phil Grenadier, and bassist Bruno Raberg." - Kevin Lowenthal, Boston Globe

9:00 - One Happy Island

Making his first Boston-area appearance in over three decades, Atlanta-based new wave pioneer Kevin Dunn will be performing new unheard compositions, daring improvisations,

and selections from the recently-released, widely acclaimed anthology "No Great Lost: Songs, 1979-1985" (Casa Nueva). Dunn will be joined by jingle-core exponents Cotton Candy

(Evelyn Hurley of Blast Off Country Style and Mark Robinson of Unrest) and Boston indiepop trio One Happy Island.

“...a smart, engaging, innovative artist whose groundbreaking work has been unjustly overlooked – until now.” – Anthony DeCurtis, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone

"...this anthology shows Dunn made some strikingly contemporary-sounding records in his own right. Bridging effete 1970s UK art-rock and the jagged, jerky American new wave he'd helped shepherd, with clever deconstructions of rock'n'roll classics for good measure, Dunn would fit right in with the more recent Atlanta scene of brainy, bratty bands like Deerhunter, the Coathangers, and Black Lips..." -- Pitchfork

"By blending electronic music with an art-rock palette, Dunn crafted a small but precise body of work, revolutionary in its own right, while fronting bands with such names as the Regiment of Women and the Radical Centrists. But he was too far ahead of his time for the new wave scene..." -- Creative Loafing

"... the compilation is a must for fans of the idiom, revealing Dunn as a key link in the chain between British and American new wave. Don’t believe me? Then toss out all your R.E.M., dB’s and Feelies records and see what’s missing." -- Nashville Scene

2:00 PM An Afternoon of Music, Zen Poetry, and Dharma

To support The Shim Gum Do Outreach Scholarship Fund
A Scholarship Fundraiser for Students of Shim Gum Do

http://www.shimgumdo.org/

As most of you know I have been studying Shim Gum Do Martial Arts (www.shimgumdo.org) for over 5 years now and I have learned much living with the enlightened Founding Master, Great Zen Master Chang Sik Kim. I have been given the opportunity to share what I have learned, and I will be starting up various Shim Gum Do Outreach Clubs around the Boston area. The first club I am opening is at the Lily Pad, starting 9/9/10!

My goal is to make Shim Gum Do available to more people both geographically and financially. Part of my program is the Shim Gum Do Outreach Scholarship Fund - a fund to help subsidize the tuition of students, primarily teenagers, who could not otherwise afford Shim Gum Do. There are already dedicated, existing students who have stopped training due to financial constraints and we will be looking to assist them, as well as additional students in the Outreach Communities.

Shim Gum Do has made a huge difference in my own life far beyond what I have learned to do physically. I am eager to help students develop self confidence and realize that they have the ability to be strong leaders in the community.

This event is to be an introduction of Shim Gum Do to the Inman Square Community. It will have Zen Poetry and Dharma readings from the writings of Founding Master, Great Zen Master Chang Sik Kim, as well as Jazz based music, played by area musicians, and arranged by Paul Dilley. This should be a really great time for a great cause!!!

If you would like to attend I am suggesting a $10 donation at the door, but anything you can give would be appreciated! I am also accepting donations of goods or services for use in a raffle or silent auction. If you cannot attend, but would like to contribute please mail checks to the address below. I understand that times are tough, so even if you can’t afford a contribution your attendance and enthusiasm speaking about Shim Gum Do would be appreciated! Thank You!

Shim Gum Do Outreach functions under the American Buddhist Shim Gum Do Association, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Checks should be made out to the American Buddhist Shim Gum Do Association. Please write “Shim Gum Do Outreach Scholarship Fund” in the note area of the check.

I am also looking for volunteers for this day to help out. I could use anyone interested in reading poetry or dharma talk excerpts, a door person, and master of ceremonies. If you think you might be able to help in another way, please let me know.

I really want this email to reach as many people as possible, so please forward it to everyone that you know. Also, if you have received this email, please respond and let me know that the message is getting out. Thank you so much!!!

7:00 PM Michael Vlatkovich Quartet

Michael Vlatkovich Quartet
IMGP2056.jpg

featuring Michael Vlatkovich trombone/compositions, David Mott-baritone sax, Jonathan Golove-electric cello,
and John Bacon-drums
Michael Vlatkovich Quartet is a rather eclectic yet blended quartet. The instrumentation of percussion, baritone sax, electric cello, and trombone shows a clever amount of sonic unification as well as diversity. As minimalism attains a fruitful coexistence with garrulous improvisation and off-kilter movements, the ensemble creatively spans concise and linear unison choruses amid staggered pulses.

About MICHAEL VLATKOVICH QUARTET
MICHAEL VLATKOVICH REVIEWS
"Vlatkovich plays a muscular trombone that would have been a great asset to a Charles Mingus ensemble. His extensive vocabulary includes stentorian pronouncements, lyrical commentary, hysterical circus smears, and smooth glissandi. His bands can roar along like small juggernauts or navigate thoughtful, poignantly angular written passages. Then there are the floating, almost fragile, multiphonic clouds of sound that magically congeal in a Vlatkovich ensemble. He seems to welcome the aleatory abilities of his players as much as having his compositions played. "
DOWNBEAT
"Michael Vlatkovich isn't your average trombonist. He squeaks, soars, and sears and tears sonic pieces of paper much like a saxophonist. Quite simply, and with all due respect to players like Jed Bishop, Joe Fiedler, Masahiko Kono, Steve Swell, and even my all time favorite Roswell Rudd, Vlatkovich is the finest trombonist improvising today. While this music isn't exactly "out there," it is far from the "mainstream." There isn't a "blow out" or antagonistic section on this disc and yet all of the cuts have a smidgen of unpredictability that makes them challenging. In the end, it doesn't matter as this music shines in or outside of any context.
JAZZREVIEW.COM
"A commanding improvisational trombonist, Vlatkovich is also a devisor of challenging structures for his bandmates. Vlatkovich loves using word and numerical games to determine compositional structures. There are seldom "themes" as such but, rather, motifs collectively essayed. Around these guideposts, Vlatkovich leaves lot of room in which soloists can navigate. The raucous assembled horn passages have ancestral ties to early New Orleans jazz and Vlatkovich often writes short, concentrated ensemble bursts that hit like sound grenades."
JAZZIZ
"Michael Pierre Vlatkovich may not be a household name.... yet he still manages to be one of the most extraordinary improvising trombonists in this country as well as overseas. Also a gifted composer and arranger, Vlatkovich is one of the leading talents among Los Angeles improvisational players. Working from the Left Coast since 1973, he is well known for tireless touring, bringing his music all over the United States, Canada, and Europe. A daring and emotionally charged performer, Vlatkovich takes delight in blending a broad variety of jazz and world music styles into his own brand of engaging and unpredictable music. His approach manages to express a raw power and beauty within a minimally structured format that allows extensive group improvisations to lead the way."
ARTVOICE
"Vlatkovich is an arresting writer who works with many different forms - numerical compositions, tangos, waltzes, big band swingers, and more. He also assembles musicians accomplished enough to interpret his pieces with verve and imagination."
L.A. NEW TIMES
"Trombonist Michael Vlatkovich served up a more animated mix of gutbucket grooves and extended form at his Knitting Factory set...His multi-theme pieces flow in ways that feel right to the ear, so they don't feel like patchwork or even suite-like. They also leave lots of room for broad brush blowing."
CODA
"Maybe its the similarity to the slide whistle, but something about the trombone seems to attract musicians who, despite their amazing virtuosity, still retain a mischievous sense of humor. Vlatkovich and his ensemble play thoughtful, melodic free jazz with a wry air.....a little marvel of joyous, minimalist improvisation - consistently swinging but never confined by time".
SEATTLE WEEKLY
"With its blustery, swaggering and bluesy Mingus -like rag-tag amalgam of structure (including interesting support for soloists) and open-ended improvisation, buoyed by periodic rock rhythm underpinning which, amazingly enough, avoids any concession to fusion or pop, and odd striking percussion textures, it's a sprawling, spirited freewheeling set."
CADENCE JAZZ MAGAZINE
"The band is notable for its unusual instrumentation, encouraging pallet, repertoire of originals, and its good intentions...Vlatkovich's resourceful writing provided a framework fro his gritty, muffled-toned trombone."
LOS ANGELES TIMES
"The Michael Vlatkovich Quartet, specializes in tautly constructed group improvisations that provide lost of nourishing food for musical thought; their combinded sounds swing effortlessly yet solidly. From '20's style gutbucket testifying to '60's like "outside" musings and beyond, most of the passing century's musical innovations are encompassed. Blend in a healthy dose of humor and a bit of underlying irreverence and you've the makings of an enthralling evening."
SANTA FE REPORTER
"Trombonist/composer Michel Vlatkovich has a knack for leaving just the right loose ends loose and weaving others into knots that are almost impossible to unravel. His arrangements are characteristically sparse - sometimes startingly so- but the depths of his imagination are so densely packed with the new and the fresh that listening to Vlatkovich blow is to hear improvisational jazz for the first time, every time. The St. Louis born, musician is considered among the top musical and compositional minds on the Left Coast. That's at least in part because Vlatkovich, is almost entirely fearless when it comes to stretching the limits of jazz well beyond the accepted stratosphere of improvisation. Never timid, shy or subtle, Vlatkovich wrings melodies out of his trombone with brute force, nailing together a wide variety of jazz styles to miscellaneous scraps of world music and jackhammer rhythms. His music is brash, bold and exciting-the way improv ought to be."
THE WEEKLY ALIBI
"The skeletal compositions generate an organized spontaniety that is quite striking because the music is allowed to develop in an atmosphere of considerable freedom"
JAZZ FORUM
"In the spirit of Ornette Coleman, Vlatkovich compositions are often jagged and humorous...Vlatkovich's trombone ranges over as wide a terrain as his tunes, progressing form funky bop to slippery high register pranks to walking bass lines to frog-like croaks" "With its blustery, swaggering and bluesy Mingus-like rag tag amalgam of structure(including interesting support for soloists) and open-ended improvisations, buoyed by periodic rock rhythm underpinning which, amazingly enough, avoids any concession to fusion or pop, and odd striking percussion textures, it's a sprawling, spirited,free-wheeling set."

The Fringe are one of the genuine living treasures of the Boston jazz scene.

Along with keeping up with a busy performance schedule, each of them are well-respected educators helping to inspire the jazz musicians of tomorrow.

8:00 PM Ethan Lipton & his Orchestra

Dubbed "The Best Lounge Act of 2009" by New York Magazine, Ethan Lipton & his Orchestra play a kind of jazz-folk-country-alternative with a chewy singer-songwriter center. The quartet, whose musical stylings stylings have been compared to Tom Waits, Randy Newman and They Might Be Giants, comes to Cambridge in support of its second studio album, HONKER. The band appears frequently at New York clubs Joe's Pub and Barbes, and has played around the region at MASS MoCA and the Camden Opera House. They've opened for such diverse artists as The National and Steve Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra, and songwriter Lipton recently sang backup for Laurie Anderson on Letterman. The band has been featured on NPR's "Weekend Edition" and in the Portia de Rossi movie "The Shift," and contributed "Corner Soul" to the Clash cover album THE SANDINISTA PROJECT. Cambridge bonus: Guitar player Eben Levy was a founding member and frontman for the legendary Boston band Chucklehead.
“It's got sweet melodies, songs that are both intricate and immediate, hilarious moments, heartbreaking moments, a great band, and a charismatic performer up front to deliver it all.”
-POPMATTERS

“Ethan Lipton is to lounge lizardry what Peter Sellers’s Inspector Clouseau is to policing, presenting his singular, funny-miserable take on life via jazzy, brass-festooned songs. Good stuff…” - TIME OUT NY

“Songwriter Ethan Lipton is an ambivalent nostalgist with a playwright's ear (because he is one) for conversational lyrics. On his cautionary new album, Honker, the dry singer and his elegantly spacious trio perform songs about bicycles, Tupperware, guilt, pit bulls, hippies, Internet love, and the afterlife. It’s like a peek into an old curio shop from a hundred years ago.”
-VILLAGE VOICE

“If you buy one album this June, make it Honker by Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra.”
