Josh Rosen, piano, compositions
Stan Strickland, sax, flute, voice and percussion

Josh Rosen and Stan Strickland have been performing as a duo since Fall 2007, and have been warmly received in standing-room-only concerts. They have a deep rapport, with Stan's sparkling instrumental colors playing off Josh's expressive piano. They perform Rosen's compositions and unique arrangements of favorite standards and cover tunes. Josh and Stan also love to engage in some "freeplay" as they improvise in tandem with ease.

zigglezagglemusic.com
stanstrickland.net

Singer, saxophonist, flutist, actor Stan Strickland has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, New Zealand and the former Soviet Union. In addition to numerous radio and television appearances, Stan has performed in many clubs and concert halls, including Jordan and Symphony Halls in Boston, Carnegie Recital Hall and Town Hall in New York, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. His work has been featured on recordings by Bob Moses, Marty Ehrlich, Webster Lewis and Brute Force. Stan has performed with jazz greats Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Mann, Danilo Perez, Shirley Scott and Marlena Shaw. Love & Beauty, Stan's jazz vocal CD, featuring new arrangements of great jazz classics as well as original material, was released by Hawkline Records in 2005.

Pianist and composer Josh Rosen is co-leader of 3play+, a band with "a breadth of vision and diversity (Performer Magazine). Their debut CD, American Waltz, "sets new limits for contemporary jazz", says Jazz Times, and is "a top pick for 2009!" for JazzReview.com.

"absolutely gorgeous...Rosen's compositions are considerably sophisticated...throughout this mix of alternately melodic and more tonally abstruse jazz , there’s a sensibility ranging from sly and funny to warmly, indelibly tuneful." - Lucid Culture

Rosen has performed/recorded with world music performers Mulatu Astake and Mindia Devi Klein, folk artists Bob Franke and Dean Stevens, and jazz greats Mick Goodrick, George Garzone, Greg Hopkins, Bob Moses, Phil Grenadier, John Lockwood among many others. Performer Magazine says, “Josh Rosen evokes a refreshingly relaxed openness, yet burns with the best.”

9:00 PM Saxophones in Machines: All of Us

Saxophones in Machines is a sax duo improvising with computer manipulation. Computer chips meets wet reeds and bass with unpredictable results. Mike Dobiel and Kelly Roberge will work to bring the machines to a higher understanding of humanity through creative improvisation.

All of Us is an electronic solo quartet formed by saxophonist Kelly Roberge in 2010. Performing several midi instruments and character sketches, Roberge takes on the roles of a four member band which performs sax heavy compositions ranging from jazz to metal. Merging Roberge’s love of music and improv comedy, the characters interact as real life people living ordinary lives in their respective communities.

Backstory:

Answering Kelly’s craigslist post to create an online electrochestra in late 2009, Stan, Marty and Cecil met on skype to do some cyber jamming. Since all the members live all over (Illinois, Minnesota, England and Massachusetts), they have to rehearse online by linking up their computers, midi instruments and saxophone. Technology has allowed this band to exist in its rehearsal phase but live gigs require a lot of frequent flyer miles!

7:30 PM Zampano’s Playhouse: Depraved Youth 1953 – 1976

Depraved Youth 1953 – 1976

Door 7:30, Curtain 8:00

$5.00 cover, $5.00 beer!

Come back to Zampano’s Playhouse for an evening of deviant teen behavior interspersed with hapless adult attempts to set it right in this program of educational howlers, TV promotions, and other oddball film shorts. This roughly chronological program will also offer a striking illustration of evolving filmic styles over two decades: narrative voices evolve from authoritarian 1st-person to navel-gazing 1st-person; cameras venture off of their tripods to rove and tilt at radical angles; and best of all, the music morphs from schmaltz to surf and beyond.

PEYTON PLACE TV promo (1964, 20 secs., 16mm)
Model American town seethes with lust, shame.
VANDALISM (1953, 10 minutes, 16mm)
Sid Davis lays bare the threat of anti-social youths.
POSTURE HABITS (1963, 10 minutes, 16mm)
If only they stood up straight, that would be a start.
A CHILD WHO CHEATS (ca. 1968, 9 minutes, 16mm)
The apple never falls far from the tree.
VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL RESPONSES (1968, 7 minutes, 16mm)
Teachers learn how to modulate their tone for greater effectiveness.
CAUGHT IN A RIP-OFF (1974, 16 minutes, 16mm)
A first-person narrative of wounded cynicism and shame.
LOPSIDELAND (1971, 5 minutes, 16mm)
In California, not even the camera stands up straight.
THE DAY THAT SANG AND CRIED (1969, 27 minutes, 16mm)
Find out why, in this cheesy but surprisingly evocative “coming of age” film.
ANGIE, BABY (1976, 4 minutes, 16mm)
Helen Reddy’s deranged teen gets trippy animation treatment.

Zampano’s Playhouse

A film collector from Cambridge, MA. , Albert Steg left his first career teaching English literature and writing to not-so-troubled teens in order to pursue work in film preservation and archiving. He is a member of the Board of Directors of The Center for Home Movies and works as a freelance Filemaker Pro developer providing collections management solutions for people who like to organize things. The films in his Zampano’s Playhouse film programs are drawn from his growing collection of educational, industrial, ephemeral and ‘blue’ movies.

"This album is wildly entertaining, creative at the same time, and the guy's have something to tell. A band to watch. And to enjoy.” -FreeJazz Blog

The anything goes, eclectic mentality of the musical melting pot of Brooklyn, NY is the perfect setting for trumpeter and composer Ben Syversen’s first album as a leader, Cracked Vessel. Making the most of the broad palette available to three musicians, the pieces in this album range from rocking vehicles for free improvisation to ethereal tone poems and long form narratives. The band builds on but quickly departs from ideas pioneered by such creative music luminaries as Tim Berne, Ellery Eskelin, and Jim Black, while drawing in sounds from seminal rock bands such as Sonic Youth, twisted takes on Americana, and sly, just beneath the surface references to Eastern European folk music.

During the nearly 3 years he has lived in Brooklyn, Ben has immersed himself fully in all that the city has to offer. In addition to performing with a number of improvising musicians including Reuben Radding, Russ Flynn, Jessica Lurie and many more, he has been an active participant in the Balkan music scene, performing regularly with several groups including Raya Brass Band and Ansambl Mastika. He has toured throughout the US and Japan, and has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands and the Newport Jazz Festival.
