8:00 PM Transportive” electro-acoustic percussion duo Loop 2.4.3 returns to the Lily Pad
The performances of Galactic-fusion duo Loop 2.4.3 have been described as “fascinating” (Time Out NY), “transportive” (Boston Phoenix), “hard-driving (the New Yorker), and “stunning” (Time Out Chicago). Fresh off of a US tour that included appearances with Clogs, Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), and Sufjan Stevens, Loop 2.4.3 heads up the coast for this special appearance at Lily Pad. They will perform music from their highly acclaimed sophomore album, Zodiac Dust, as well as 3 northeast premieres. Expect walls of drums, psychedelic electro-acoustic riffs, and melodic moments of reflection with intimate vocal harmonies.
Loop 2.4.3 are composers/instrument inventors/improvisers/performers and “virtuosi musicians of the highest calibre” (Gordon Stout). Members Thomas Kozumplik and Lorne Watson paid their dues in the Heartland (growing up and gigging all over Michigan and the mid-west), on the reservation (Watson taught for and learned from the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe), and in the Ivy League (Kozumplik went to music school at Yale).
Known to employ the gamut of percussion instruments, Loop 2.4.3’s new album, Zodiac Dust (Music Starts From Silence), uses an expanded palette including strings and two instruments of their invention, the Rose Echo and eLog. Their music has been described as "taut compositions with a stunning improvisational sense" (Time Out - Chicago), and as consisting of both "action adventures and reveries... all sound[ing] like part of a well-thought-out tradition, only the tradition has never existed until now." (Milo Miles, Fresh Air - NPR).
Loop 2.4.3 has performed with Clogs, Newband (Harry Partch Ensemble), Dafnis Prieto, Belle Orchestre, the Books, Evan Ziporyn, Sufjan Stevens, Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond, the Decemberists), Joe Morello, their late mentor Robert Hohner, dancer/choreographer Alan Good, director John Jeserun, as soloists with the Brooklyn Philharmonic at the BAM Opera House, and at Times Square in a collaboration with Robert Indiana, Michael McKenzie and Teresa Smith. The duo has toured internationally and performed for radio, theater, and television, including The Learning Channel and MTV. They have appeared at the Sydney Festival, the London Jazz Festival, Merkin Hall, and the Japan Society (NYC) among others.

10:00 PM Ezekiel's Wheels Klezmer Band
http://www.myspace.com/ezekielsklezmer
Not your great-aunt Mirele's klezmer band.
Burning hot klezmer from Nat Seelen, Jon Cannon, Pete Fanelli, and Kirsten Lamb.
Come prepared to dance in your seats.
In a village not too different from the one in which you stand and read this-RIGHT NOW!-where there are cows and goats and grains grow in the early morning light, Ezekiel's Wheels Klezmer Band was born. First, it had four heads, eight wings, eight legs, and a trombone you could trip over if you weren't too careful. Now it has four heads, eight wings, eight legs, that very same trombone, and a big wooden upright bass, and if you look at the moon just right at the perfect time of the month and the evening, you can just about see them pulling a fiery chariot of klezmer across the sky.
With a foundation of klezmer tradition, Ezekiel's Wheels Klezmer Band combines various elements of Balkan, American folk, and jazz styles to create an entertaining, creative and danceable blend that is unique to this quartet.
Jon, Kirsten, Nat, and Pete love to play klezmer in and around Boston, they love to hang out in the MBTA for the morning rush hour before work, and they love you.
JON CANNON (Fiddle):
Fiddler by day and Boston University mathematician-in-training by night, Jon Cannon's mind is steeped deeply in Gematria, the numerical-mystical tradition of the Jews. If you take the numerical values of the names of all of the bands he plays with -- including nautical rock bands Sharks Come Cruisin' and Three Sheets to the Wind, Yiddish/Brechtian trio The Saltwives, contra dance band Swim Down, world folk quartet Barnacle, gypsy-jazz group Gypsy Nights, and Slav-punk band Somerville Symphony Orkestar, just to name a few -- and compute their least common multiple in the traditional Babylonian base-60 number system... you probably have too much time on your hands. Jon certainly doesn't.
KIRSTEN LAMB (Bass):
Kirsten plays upright bass with just about anyone who will let her. When not playing bass, she spends a relatively high percentage of her time baking desserts for a vegan pizzeria and writing modal banjo tunes. When she was little, her favorite color was periwinkle, though currently it is most definitely green. She generally prefers cats over other alternatives for animal companionship.
NAT SEELEN (Clarinet):
Nat Seelen is six feet and one half inch tall. He has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes, and if he hasn't shaved yet this morning his face tends toward dark brown as well. This is not the case if he has shaved this morning, in which circumstance his face tends towards a lighter shade. Showering also affects this, and he showers each morning both to clean and to awaken. He plays clarinet and other things, and spends all of his money on books, as learning is to him what food is to most. He also eats food, and drinks klezmer.
PETE FANELLI (Trombone):
Pete Fanelli was born in Syracuse, went to school in Rochester and recently moved to Boston as part of a social experiment to see how long a person can last playing trombone without needing to join the circus. So far so good, but only time will tell. Pete enjoys playing any type of music where he can improvise. He also enjoy teaching others the joys of buzzing into a brass mouthpiece. Pete loves coffee, spaghetti, sandwiches and scheming up elaborate plans for self improvement and most likely not going through with them (such as increasing the number of pushups he does by 1 each day to build upper body strength. He has been stuck on 3 pushups for 5 months.)

7:45 PM Jon Fisher Quartet
Jonathan Fisher, Nathan Berla-Shulock, Raviv Markovitz, and Isaac Haselkorn will play one set of local Boston jazz. The music will be fiery but well-contained, and certainly very enjoyable.
Jonathan Fisher is a pianist from Newton, MA and a student of sciences at Yale College. He has been playing piano since age five, and he has since studied jazz with Rusty Scott, David Zoffer, JoAnne Brackeen, Wayne Naus, and Charlie Banacos. His piano style has been shaped by Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, and melodies that he whistles to himself when walking down the street.
Nathan is a saxophonist, flautist, composer, and music producer from Newton, MA. He is currently a student at Manhattan School of Music where he studies jazz performance with George Garzone. Other teachers of his have included Steve Slagle, Garry Dial, John Riley, and Kelly Roberge. He has performed with artists such as Rich Perry, Ingrid Jensen, Geoffrey Keezer, and Bo Winiker.
Raviv Markovitz is an acoustic and electric bassist from Lexington, MA and is currently a college student at Columbia University in New York City. He was selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition, and was selected to the 2009 GRAMMY Jazz Ensemble, the 2010 YoungArts Jazz Fellows, and the 2008 Vail Jazz Workshop under John Clayton. He was a 2010 NFAA Silver Award Winner, and he attended the 2009 Stanford Jazz Residency and earned a scholarship to the 2007 Berklee 5-week Summer Performance Program. He has won awards at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival, the Clark Terry UNH Jazz Festival, and various IAJE Festivals and has performed at venues such as Symphony Hall, the Berklee Performance Center, and Jordan Hall. He has studied with musicians such as Charlie Banacos, Bruce Gertz, John Clayton, Ben Waltzer, and Ugonna Okegwo.
Boston resident and native Isaac Haselkorn is one of the hardest working drummers around. Having finished his second year at Berklee College of Music, he performs regularly in venues and clubs in and around the Boston area. Isaac was recently accepted into Berklee's new Global Jazz Institute, and will continue to refine his artistic self under the instruction of Danilo Perez as well as other jazz greats.
10:22 PM The Fringe

The Fringe are one of the genuine living treasures of the Boston jazz scene. Originally formed back in 1971 by tenor-saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman, and drummer Bob Gullotti as an outlet for their free jazz improvisations, The Fringe have entertained and enlightened Boston area jazz audiences for over 30 years. Bassist Appleman left the band in 1985 to become Chairman of the Bass Department at Berklee College and was replaced by veteran bassist John Lockwood.
Along with their impressive tenure with The Fringe, Gullotti, Garzone, and Lockwood are in great demand as session players and have played with many of the greats of contemporary jazz. Along with keeping up with a busy performance schedule, each of them are well-respected educators helping to inspire the jazz musicians of tomorrow.

7:30 PM Peter Stoltzman
with Bob Moses and Cecil McBee

www.peterjohnstoltzman.com
www.myspace.com/peterjohnstoltzman
While quietly releasing 5 independent recordings over the past decade, Stoltzman has cut his teeth as a sideman with jazz luminaries and young lions – performing with Eddie Gomez and Steve Gadd, Ron Westray, Bob Moses, Julian Lage, Justin Vasquez and Yosvanny Terry, among others. Stoltzman has played in the Montreal Jazz Festival, the North Beach, San Jose, and Stanford Jazz Festivals, the Texas and Austin Jazz Festivals, and jazz venues from NYC to Bratislava to Tokyo. With his father, Grammy-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, Peter John has recorded three CDs for BMG, played the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and concert halls around the globe. A uniquely diverse performer, Stoltzman has recorded and toured with folk, rock, funk, drum-n-bass, fusion, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban groups, performed an avant-garde concerto with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and even made tracks for Warner Bros. hip-hop artists.
All along, Stoltzman has maintained a passion for the piano trio, inspired by the likes of Jarrett, Oscar Peterson, and Brad Meldhau. While honoring the history and the masters within the tradition, the Peter John Stoltzman Trio builds bridges to the past and the future with a contemporary jazz approach to classical and modern popular music – from Debussy to Dylan. Original compositions by the Trio, from epic long-form jazz to sweet ballads to funky New Orleans second-line, have audiences enthralled, teary-eyed, and tapping their feet.
10:20 PM Either/Orchestra
In 1969, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a young singer named Teshome Mitiku wrote a song called "Yezamed Yebada and recorded it under the aegis of the legendary Amha Records. Three years later Teshome left Ethiopia for Sweden, where he developed a music career, fathered a little girl who became the Swedish pop star Emilia, and eventually moved to the US. In the late 1990s, French producer Francis Falceto included "Yezamed Yebada" on the first of the Ethiopiques, a series of CDs which have introduced the wonderful Ethiopian popular music of the late Haile Selassie period to the world.
One set of ears that picked up on this song belonged to Either/Orchestra leader Russ Gershon, who arranged it as an instrumental for the group, which has since recorded it twice: in the studio for Afro-Cubism (2002) and for their electrifying double CD Ethiopiques 20: Live in Addis (2005).
Now for the first time Teshome Mitiku with perform "Yezamed" – and a number of other songs – with the Either/Orchestra in a "secret concert" at the Lily Pad. The team is preparing to introduce Teshome to the jazz public at the prestigious Chicago Jazz Festival on September 4, and this show at the Pad is a test run of the material.
Please come on down for a little bit of history, as Teshome meets the Either/Orchestra for the first time.

Brett Randell http://www.BrettRandell.com
"Brett Randell is a 22-year-old singer/songwriter currently living in Austin, TX. With lyrics that weave stories and muse over feelings many seem to take for granted, Brett is a musician on a mission to connect the world. His musical poetry, coupled with his unique, sultry voice, emulates the styles of Jason Mraz, Citizen Cope, and Cab Calloway.
Brett recently finished his new EP "Glow" in April with his band Brett Randell and The Last Crescendo. He will be touring for 7-weeks this summer from Austin-to-Boston and back to promote the new EP. Free MP3s can be downloaded from his website http://www.BrettRandell.com."
Ginger Ibex
http://www.myspace.com/gingeribex
Sharon Crumrine's (pianist/composer) earliest influences were Beethoven, whose music alternately rocks the world or moves listeners to tears with its dark lyrical beauty; the Romantic, Classical and Impressionist composers; and the sounds of Middle Eastern modes, Tango and contemporary Rock. Betty Widerski's (6-string mezzo viola) radically eclectic background (Classical gone Irish Punk/Rock/Improv) and endless creative & technical ability on a wild variety of stringed instruments, plus dynamic percussionist Michael Steigman added to the mix, give Ginger Ibex a powerful yet lyrical sound.
Molly Zenobia
Molly Zenobia’s music is soulful, visceral, and vast. She will reconnect you with something that you’ve forgotten about yourself, calling up instincts and memories long buried by the pressures of life. She makes you remember, helps you to work through what was, and guides you to the re-embrace of soul and a sense of self.
10:00 PM Avoxblue
Avoxblue is the brand new solo electronic project of Jimmy Rossi Jr. from The December Sound. Rossi's music combinines atmospheric synth layers with processed drum loops, sweeping string samples and lush effected vocals. Drawing inspiration from such artists as Ulrich Schnauss, Air and Ladytron, Avoxblue creates a sonic experiment by decontructing, remixing and re-building all of the tracks live. The live show is set to a backdrop of abstract video projections which are also composed and edited by Rossi.
