"WE WILL ROCK YOU--WE WILL JAZZ YOU" – the basic idea of the project is to “re-build” the musical background of some of the melodies which characterized the “classic rock”, imagining alternatives situations and scenarios .The particular and also hybrid line up , sax-guitar-drums, and the mixture of jazz, european avant-garde and progressive rock , make this work of reinventing the tunes even more convincing, which is also strengthened by the choice of the “victims” such as Police, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Doors and more

8:11 PM Biff Rose

Born in New Orleans, Rose first came to prominence as a banjo-toting standup comedian, profiled in Time magazine in 1965. By 1966 he moved to Hollywood, working as a comedy sketch writer with George Carlin for a host of television variety shows, ultimately working with some regularity on the Mort Sahl show. [1] Eventually, Rose moved back to songwriting.
David Bowie covered the song "Fill Your Heart," co-written by Rose and Paul Williams, on his album Hunky Dory (1971). The song was originally released by Tiny Tim as the B-side to his 1968 hit single, "Tiptoe through the Tulips." Bowie played another Rose song, "Buzz the Fuzz," in live performance [2]. Other Rose songs were covered by John Denver [3] and Pat Boone [4].
Following the release of 1968's The Thorn in Mrs. Rose's Side, Rose made several memorable appearances on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show from 1968 to 1970. [5][6]. He also performed his songs on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour[7], American Bandstand [8], and Hugh Hefner's Playboy After Dark [9]. He emceed the Atlantic City Pop Festival of 1969 [10], and the Atlanta Pop Festival of 1970 [11].
1978's Roast Beef was produced by Mike Nesmith and recorded in a single take.
2005 saw a revival of label interest in Rose's work. A US CD re-released his Tetragrammaton albums and singles, and a UK compilation covered Rose's work from 1968 through 1985.

FBQ have appeared onstage with many greats of jazz. Wrote Nate Chinen of the New York Times: ‘’A pianist and composer of high stature in his native Montreal, Mr. Bourassa favors avant-gardism of a liquid and often lyrical sort.”

7:30 PM FIVE-LEGGED INTERSECTION
The first concert, FIVE-LEGGED INTERSECTION of the soundcrossings music series will take place on Thursday, June 17, 2010, 7:30p at the lilypad in Cambridge, MA. We'll perform five pieces of five composers whose aesthetics are as wide-ranging as their travels have taken them. Jean Ahn's Folksong Revisit gives us an equal-tempered re-interpretation of traditional Korean song. Chao-Jan Chang's Virtual Piano Concerto engages a conversation between live virtuosic resonant piano playing and electronic sound. Czech Fulbright scholar Jiří Kadeřábek's Ninive relates in music the Biblical story of Jonas and contains traces of Moravian folk music. Reynold Tharp's Littoral takes its cue from both France and California. Hubert Ho's Meccanico is dedicated to the memory of California-based composer Jorge Liderman. Performances will be interspersed with dialogue about the music.
Jean Ahn - Folksong Revisit for solo piano
Jiří Kadeřábek - Ninive for three violocellos
Chao-Jan Chang - Virtual Piano Concerto for piano and electronics
Reynold Tharp - Littoral for solo piano
Hubert Ho - Meccanico for solo piano
Hubert Ho, piano
Tavi Ungerleider, cello
Patrick McGuire, cello
Nick Bodnar, cello
Chao-Jan Chang, electronics
Soundcrossings serves to open hearts and minds to music outside of mainstream contexts. We especially welcomes new ears and new hearts to the world of contemporary music. Admission on sliding scale basis: $3 - $15.

Joe Moffit on trumpet,
Dan Blacksberg on trombone,
Dave Flaherty on drums,
and Daniel Durham on bass.
Bird Fly Yellow refracts the sound of jazz through the weirdo lens of its members’ brains. The group finds pleasure in polarizing its own sound, digging deep to reveal layered personalities within.
The band was formed in 2008 by alumni of the New England Conservatory of Music. The individual members of the ensemble have been involved in a wide variety of musical projects, from jazz to Klezmer, bluegrass to folk-pop, and brought this arsenal into the melting pot that is Bird Fly Yellow. Since its formation, the band has performed its original compositions throughout the Northeast. Bird Fly Yellow has also adapted pieces by classic avant-jazz gurus, including Julius Hemphill’s concept album “Flat-Out Jump Suite,” which was performed in its entirety as part of Philadelphia’s Ars Nova Workshop in 2009.
In addition to their love of music, the members of the group are big fans of books. They also enjoy walking, eating, and talking.

8:00 PM ADDDDDDDDD: a new opera by thingNY
Written and performed by Isabel Castellvi, Andrew Livingston, Paul Pinto, Erin Rogers and Jeffrey Young
For four years, new music ensemble thingNY has fused fluxus-esque experimentation with theatrically-charged chamber music. For its first album, this "creative new music cabal" [Time Out New York] has chosen to release a comic book + CD package of their experimental opera, ADDDDDDDDD. Join them for their New York production of the opera, followed by an album release party. With influences from Robert Ashley, Berg, Boulez, Braxton and Bjork, thingNY's collaboratively composed ADDDDDDDDD is an opera exploring the sweet sounds of excess. In a poetically verbose blend of noise, song, and spoken word, the five composer/performers highlight the everyday excesses of our lives as told through chants, rants, and advertising. The album (co-produced by thingNY and Brendan O'Brien) opens with the both earnest and absurd prologue, “Interesting Stories from Interesting People” but quickly becomes a montage of numbers, appointments, peeves, dreams and commercial interruptions in five-part harmony. The accompanying comic book libretto features artwork from various artists and musicians, including some of the band.

9:30pm Icelandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs makes her Boston debut with her quartet featuring Loren Stillman on alto saxophone, Dan Fabricatore on bass and Scott McLemore on drums. They will be playing original music from her latest CD "The Dream" and quite possibly some Icelandic folk music.
Mike Joyce once wrote in the Washington Post that Gunnlaugs' music "elegantly bridges soul-searching passages with uncluttered swing." That one phrase may be the best description her overall musical concept, which is really an intersection of European and American influences; something quite natural for someone raised in Scandinavia who lived in the US for over a decade.
"Fine musicians seem to be among Iceland's most visible exports these days, and pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs is proof that jazz is as much a part of the picture as the pop of Björk or Sigur Ros."
— Time Out New York
"Gunnlaugs combines a unique blend of jazz piano and Icelandic folk music. ...branches out into the avant garde making for a great listen for jazz and experimental music fans."
— Jazziz
"...there is an underlying philosophy that makes melody paramount. Much has been written recently about making jazz more accessible to a broader audience. With Live in Europe, Gunnlaugs proves that jazz can have a wider appeal without losing integrity."

"It's clearly been my experience as a listener, that The October Trio...is performing some of the freshest, vital contemporary jazz on the Canadian scene today” – Ken Pickering, Artistic Director, Vancouver International Jazz Festival
“This is a CD with a tangible sense of place. 3 and ½ stars"
– Down Beat Magazine
"Looks Like Its Going To Snow has no shortage of strengths, from intriguing compositions to extraordinarily inventive players, but at its core it really is all about the ensemble."
– Jazz Times
“unmistakable chemistry and artistic purpose… Among the marvelous elements of Going to Snow is the way it easily and off-handedly incorporates funk and rock elements without becoming a collection that is dominated by a backbeat aesthetic.” – Popmatters.com
"Freedom and composition work in tandem and in juxtaposition. The melody sings a delightful song and then disappears leavening the field for Arntzen and Turner to set out again on the paths their imaginations unfurl. They do so in the lockstep of seamless parallel lines and by ricocheting off each other. Surprise springs up constantly. Lush and sparse, fragmented and whole, detailed ornamentation and scraggly linearity are clasped in indelible logic.”

10:00 PM 2ND Annual SemiI-Annual There Will Be Cake Concert Featuring ROB' RUDIN'S HALF-JEWISH
It's been two years since drummer Rob Rudin served up a nice piece of cake along with original music on the eve of his birthday. He may or may not be two years wiser, but he does have experience throwing a party at the Lily Pad venue. This year's concert features Rudin's new Jewish compositions and pieces by Jewish composers John Zorn and Leonard Cohen, and an arrangement based on settings of Psalm 137 by American composer William Billings and classic reggae artists The Melodians. Rudin will also premiere the suite Number 37 based on the life of world-champion jai-alai player Joey Cornblit, whose player number was 37.
"I put together the group Half-Jewish in order to play with some of my favorite musicians and to show that klezmer is not the only Jewish music," says Rudin. The musicians include two Hot Tamale Brass Band members, clarinetist and saxophonist Mark Chenevert and Danny Heath on trombone and vocals. Gill Aharon, who plays piano with his trio every Sunday at the Lily Pad, is along for the ride, as is trumpeter Sam Dechenne of John's Brown Body, Humanwine bassist Paul Dilley, violinist Mimi Rabson of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and multi-reedman Ted Roland.
Born in 1955 to Israeli immigrants in Montreal, Canada, Cornblit's family moved to Miami where he began playing the game, popular in Southern Florida, at age 12. He traveled to Spain to train in the Basque sport similar to handball in which players grip a reed basket and volley a rock-hard ball at speeds up to 150 miles per hour. The music reflects the places he traveled and his encounters with eastern meditation and Rudin's father, self-described number-one-jai-alai-fan Harold Rudin. Expect salsa, jazz, a spoken fugue, marches, Hindusthani (Indian classical) music, a live ping-pong match and yes, even a little klezmer.
The Dirty Water Brass Band, Boston's newest New Orleans-style group, opens the show.
Show starts at 10 PM. Suggested donation is $10.
