7:30 PM FIVE-LEGGED INTERSECTION

The first concert, FIVE-LEGGED INTERSECTION of the soundcrossings music series will take place on Thursday, June 17, 2010, 7:30p at the lilypad in Cambridge, MA. We'll perform five pieces of five composers whose aesthetics are as wide-ranging as their travels have taken them. Jean Ahn's Folksong Revisit gives us an equal-tempered re-interpretation of traditional Korean song. Chao-Jan Chang's Virtual Piano Concerto engages a conversation between live virtuosic resonant piano playing and electronic sound. Czech Fulbright scholar Jiří Kadeřábek's Ninive relates in music the Biblical story of Jonas and contains traces of Moravian folk music. Reynold Tharp's Littoral takes its cue from both France and California. Hubert Ho's Meccanico is dedicated to the memory of California-based composer Jorge Liderman. Performances will be interspersed with dialogue about the music.

Jean Ahn - Folksong Revisit for solo piano
Jiří Kadeřábek - Ninive for three violocellos
Chao-Jan Chang - Virtual Piano Concerto for piano and electronics
Reynold Tharp - Littoral for solo piano
Hubert Ho - Meccanico for solo piano

10:15 PM Bird Fly Yellow

http://myspace.com/birdflyyellow

Joe Moffit on trumpet,
Dan Blacksberg on trombone,
Dave Flaherty on drums,
and Daniel Durham on bass.

Bird Fly Yellow refracts the sound of jazz through the weirdo lens of its members’ brains. The group finds pleasure in polarizing its own sound, digging deep to reveal layered personalities within.

The band was formed in 2008 by alumni of the New England Conservatory of Music. The individual members of the ensemble have been involved in a wide variety of musical projects, from jazz to Klezmer, bluegrass to folk-pop, and brought this arsenal into the melting pot that is Bird Fly Yellow. Since its formation, the band has performed its original compositions throughout the Northeast. Bird Fly Yellow has also adapted pieces by classic avant-jazz gurus, including Julius Hemphill’s concept album “Flat-Out Jump Suite,” which was performed in its entirety as part of Philadelphia’s Ars Nova Workshop in 2009.

In addition to their love of music, the members of the group are big fans of books. They also enjoy walking, eating, and talking.
