Eric Hofbauer (guitar)
Pablo Ablanedo (piano & composition)
Fernando Huergo (bass)
Bertram Lehmann (drums)
"With his latest effort, Argentine pianist/composer Pablo Ablanedo pronounces a sense of joy. In the liners the artist emphasizes that this work "alludes to the happiness of creation." To that end, Ablanedo and his octet disseminate a set of emotive musings via a Spanishtinged luster combined with polychordal horn charts and more." (4 ½ stars)
Glenn Astarita, Down Beat Magazine (US)
"Argentine composer Pablo Ablanedo makes a disarmingly gentle but firm debut notable more for his ascetic, introspective writing than his low-profile piano. This band plays the through-composed and chamber-like pieces understatedly rather than in-your-face, slowly unfolding a mature, inclusive world vision." (4 stars)
Fred Bouchard, Down Beat Magazine (US)
"...be sure that Pablo Ablanedo's work has its own personality: you will be pleased to listen and listen to From Down There.”
Claude Colpaert, Jazz Hot Magazine (France)
"It would be a mistake to pigeonhole the pianist/composer Pablo Ablanedo as a "Latin jazz artist”: the lush, complex weave of his writing for octet on the new Alegría (Fresh Sounds) has as much to do with Gil Evans as with the tangos of Ablanedo's fellow Argentine, Astor Piazzolla."

7:00 PM David Berkeley
David Berkeley "sings in a lustrous melancholy voice with shades of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake," writes the New York Times. Atlanta's Creative Loafing writes that "Berkeley crafts his songs like watercolor paintings, intimate and introspective." He recently was a guest on Ira Glass's "This American Life," telling a hilarious and painful tale of a private serenade. His music has been featured on CBS-TVs "Without a Trace" and played on radio stations across the country. He's opened for or toured with Dido, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Nickel Creek, Ray Lamontagne, Guster and many many more. Berkeley's most recent record is called Strange Light. And he is preparing to release his 4th studio project this fall, an album called Some Kind of Cure, which has been entirely funded by his fans. Berkeley is a traveler. Though based now in Atlanta, he spent a year in a mountain village on the island of Corsica, has lived in Brooklyn, California, Santa Fe, Alaska and spent 5 years as a student right here in Cambridge. Tonight David will be joined by De La Soul trumpeter player Jordan Katz.

10:22 PM The Fringe
The Fringe are one of the genuine living treasures of the Boston jazz scene. Originally formed back in 1971 by tenor-saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman, and drummer Bob Gullotti as an outlet for their free jazz improvisations, The Fringe have entertained and enlightened Boston area jazz audiences for over 30 years. Bassist Appleman left the band in 1985 to become Chairman of the Bass Department at Berklee College and was replaced by veteran bassist John Lockwood.
Along with their impressive tenure with The Fringe, Gullotti, Garzone, and Lockwood are in great demand as session players and have played with many of the greats of contemporary jazz. Along with keeping up with a busy performance schedule, each of them are well-respected educators helping to inspire the jazz musicians of tomorrow.

- This unconventional quartet was formed in 2005 by the encounter of two Portuguese and two Italians in The Netherlands, country where they moved to accomplish formal studies at the prestigious conservatories of Rotterdam and The Hague. United by the will to explore the universe of improvisation in the broadest way possible, the four members recorded in 2008 an album, And The Missing "R", published by well established portuguese label Clean Feed and reviewed by international magazines with big praises. The same year the quartet played as closing act of the annual Jazz.pt Festival in Lisbon, in a program made of big local and international names, consolidating a performing experience that included world famous Hot Clube of Lisbon, CCB (Centro Cultural de Belém) and various venues of different countries of Europe. In 2010 they will be in the USA, playing at the Clean Feed Fest in New York and also in Boston and Chicago.

Josh Rosen and Stan Strickland have been performing as a duo since Fall 2007, and have been warmly received in standing-room-only concerts. They have a deep rapport, with Stan's sparkling instrumental colors playing off Josh's expressive piano. They perform Rosen's compositions and unique arrangements of favorite standards and cover tunes. Josh and Stan also love to engage in some "freeplay" as they improvise in tandem with ease.
Josh and Stan are especially excited to present this evening’s music with guest artist Bob Weiner. Both musicians have performed many times with Bob, in various settings, over several decades! However, this will be the first time this particular grouping has performed together! Sparks are sure to fly...

Josh Rosen is a co-leader of 3play+, a band with "a breadth of vision and diversity (Performer Magazine). Their debut CD, American Waltz, was released in 2009 and is getting rave reviews:

"a top pick for 2009!" - JazzReview.com
"absolutely gorgeous...Rosen's compositions are considerably sophisticated...throughout this mix of alternately melodic and more tonally abstruse jazz , there’s a sensibility ranging from sly and funny to warmly, indelibly tuneful." - Lucid Culture
Rosen has performed/recorded with world music performers Mulatu Astake and Mindia Devi Klein, folk artists Bob Franke and Dean Stevens, and jazz greats Mick Goodrick, George Garzone, Greg Hopkins, Bob Moses, Phil Grenadier, John Lockwood among many others. "This is a listening treat! These sonic inventions are intricate in their
melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic development. At times I am reminded of the
beauty of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, as these unique and wonderful
textures unfold to reveal the creative personalities of the musicians
performing. A joyful exuberance abounds as the diverse styles (Latin, Jazz,
and Classical) are blended together to create a truly enjoyable musical
journey."
- Ken Pullig, Jazz Composition Chair of Berklee College of Music
"Mina's music is fresh. Being grounded in a wide variety of jazz, her compositions are like
journeys to different exotic places, each piece offering its own flavor, some wild fervor,
some a hard hitting yet playful groove, others more melancholic but all emotionally rewarding.
As a pianist, Mina commands the piano with great skill. Her playing exudes joy, playfulness
and vitality while providing plenty of space for her sidemen to shine. "
- Tim Lukas, a producer of Blink Music
8:00 PM Natti Vogel
Beloved "indie rock fusion virtuoso" (New York Press) singer-songwriter Natti Vogel returns to his native Cambridge for two exclusive concerts at the Lilypad right before embarking on a summer-long solo tour of China and Taiwan.
"It’s not hard to imagine New Yorker Natti Vogel tossing your own overpriced cosmopolitan in your face from across the piano. Vogel pairs his playfully menacing
cabaret melodies with plenty of fun and whimsy, but there’s also a twinge of sarcasm and mockery on such tunes as “The Corporate Bohemian” and “The Anorexia Song.” That said, it’s not Gawker set to music: Vogel’s tunes also carry a romantic yearning to get away from all that stuff."
-the Onion
"Simply too complex to be reduced into a genre, Natti's music is an alternative to listening to genre. You are instead listening to the possibilities in which chords can create a different world, allowing you to transcend in imagination - like a drug."
-Diane Taha of Associated Content
"NYC-based Natti Vogel channels the swagger of Jim Morrison and honky- tonk piano of an old-timey saloon"
-WeLiveInBeijing.com
"Natti Vogel and his band do a wild part-vaudeville, part-pop, part-classical act that made me think about what music does"
-the Brothers Frank
"Louche and debonair, Natti Vogel is a triumph on stage."

www.shepleymetcalf.com
“Boston jazz singer Metcalf does all jazz vocal fans a favor by digging up the trenchant songs of unjustly overlooked lyricist Landesman and her current musical collaborator, Wallace. Sly, ironic, witty, hip and humorous, Landesman’s songs – little known beyond “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most” and “The Ballad of the Sad Young Men” – offer a trove of should-be standards that aren’t worn out. And Metcalf makes the most of these treasures with her horn-like alto and swinging attack.”
Kevin R. Convey
CD Review /The Boston Herald
Shepley Metcalf and pianist/arranger Ron Roy offer up selections from their new CD Something Irresistible: Songs of Fran Landesman + Simon Wallace, along with some hot-off-the-press gems dug up from the Great American Songbook.
Last winter Shepley discovered that Landesman, who penned the 1955 jazz standard "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most," is living in London and still writing fantastic songs. Shepley and Ron are the first U.S. musicians to perform and record this new songbook.
Shepley and Ron have made music at Upstairs on the Square, Acton Jazz Cafe, The Fireplace, The Daily Catch and at Two Boots in Brooklyn, NY. In March, they were joined by Gene Roma/drums and Chris Rathbun/bass for a celebratory CD release show at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston.
"Expressive singer Metcalf....celebrates her fine new CD of these witty and engaging tunes..."

10:00 PM Pearl and the Beard and Gem Club
Pearl and the Beard is three voices, one cello, one guitar, one glockenspiel, one melodica, several drums, one accordion, ninety-six teeth, and one soul.
Former strangers Jocelyn Mackenzie, Emily Hope Price, and Jeremy Styles were united in the great city of New York. Each had migrated there from a far corner of the nation with naught but food in their pockets and money in their bellies. Each had the same true love. Since then the three have nested, and their unique brand of brightly melodic songcraft continues to blossom of its own accord.
Pearl and the Beard loves you the way you've always been.
Pearl and the Beard create the kind of heartwarming music that makes the bitter winter months bearable. The soulful folk trio’s energetic output envelopes the listener with whimsical, uplifting joy. Without a wave of distortion, pristine voices are free to entwine with a hearty collage of organic instrumentation. The spirited vocal harmonies tantalize the senses with the playful interaction between male and female voices."

"Though Cluck is also anti-folk affiliated, her sound is more serious—
she is likely one of the most refined and elegant songwriters in all of neo-folkdom (freak-, anti-, whatevuh-).
A brilliant idiosyncratic guitarist, a witty and wise lyricist, an imaginative melody writer with a powerful voice;
her dark and introspective tunes are utterly captivating, sorta like an earthier Kate Bush.
Watch her spellbind the room."--Village Voice NYC May 2009
