7pm Helen Money

Helen Money is Alison Chesley, a Chicago based cellist and composer who has
become known for her unique sound and compelling stage performance. Using the
tools of a lead guitarist, she channels her sensibilities and experience as a rock
musician through a classical instrument. She has opened for bands as diverse as
Shellac, Earth, Joe Lally, Nina Nastasia, The Bad Plus, KTL and Hunn Huur Tu.

An integral part of the Chicago recording scene, her name appears on dozens of
albums, in particular those recorded by two pioneering Chicago musicians and
producers, Steve Albini of Electrical Audio and John McIntyre of Soma Studios. Her
sound and arrangements can be heard on albums by MONO, Anthrax, Russian Circles,
Chris Connelly, Disturbed, Bob Mould, and Broken Social Scene to name a few.

A native of Los Angeles, California, Chesley moved to Chicago to attend
Northwestern University, where she received a Master's Degree in Cello Performance
in 1994. That same year Chesley and Jason Narducy (currently of the Bob Mould Band)
formed an acoustic rock duo that would became Verbow. Verbow went on to
release two albums for Epic Records - Chronicles, produced by Bob Mould and White
Out produced by Brad Wood. Opening for such bands as Frank Black, Bob Mould,
Counting Crows, Live, Morrissey, Liz Phair and Brad with Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam,
Verbow toured nationally for seven years.

In addition to writing all the material for Helen Money, Chesley also composes music
for film, theater and dance, including the soundtrack to the award-winning
documentary “Indestructible,” two major works for Chicago based Mordine and
Company Dance Theater, and music for the Jeff-winning play “Beholder.” In 2007
Chesley was honored by being granted a full scholarship to study composition with
guitarist/composer Fred Frith at San Francisco's esteemed Mills College. She decided
against the move to concentrate on Helen Money.

The second full-length Helen Money album titled, In Tune, will be released this
December on the esteemed experimental and avant-garde label, Table of the
Elements. The album was recorded at Electrical Audio by Greg Norman (Pelican,
Russian Circles, Neurosis) and mixed by Sanford Parker (Pelican, Chris Connelly,
Yakuza, Buried at Sea) at Semaphore Studios in Chicago.

"To the great wide jazz world, the name of drummer Steve Langone may be a new one, in which case the combustible music on this disc will be a revelation.
For those who have been listening in the Boston area for the past decade, the results will not be so surprising.
Langone is the kind of muscian whose talent is noticed when heard in any of the numerous ensembles with which he has performed, and whose range is just as obvious once you notice that he is one of the most active drummers in a variety of contexts. This is his debut as a leader, and it both summarizes the skills that have made him so successful and prophesizes an even brighter future."

7:30 PM CHARLIE KOHLHASE’S EXPLORER’S CLUB

Join Charlie Kohlhase and his Explorer’s Club band as they continue the celebration of the release of their debut CD “Adventures” (Boxholder Records) in concert at The Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge Street, Inman Square, Cambridge, MA on Friday, November 6. Music starts at 7:15 PM. Suggested donation is $10. Log on to HYPERLINK "http://www.lily-pad.net" www.lily-pad.net. While Explorers guitarist Eric Hofbauer is touring Europe with a theatrical production and a couple favored drummers are unavailable there will be some guest artists in the lineup— trumpet virtuoso Jerry Sabatini (Sonic Explorers, Kakalla) will augment the front line of Charlie Kohlhase on alto, tenor & baritone saxophones; Matt Langley on tenor & soprano saxophones and Jeff Galindo on trombone. The phenomenal young bassist Sean Farias will join Jef Charland in the bass section and Miki Matsuki will capably handle the percussion chores herself. The opening set will feature the solo tenor saxophone of Collin Johnson (a former Kohlhase student) performing original compositions, including the premiere of “Suite Desert,” a 3-part cycle inspired by the Red Rock Desert of Johnson’s native Utah.

“Over the decades Charlie Kohlhase has led many bands, and justifiably they have been lauded by the critics,” writes Stu Vandermark in Cadence. “Therefore it is of some significance that Kohlhase’s Explorer’s Club is the best band he’s ever had and he’s writing his all-time best charts for this outfit.” Starting out as a quintet in early 2005 -- in effect as a variation on the relatively short-lived group, CK5 -- it promptly expanded to a septet with the addition of a trombone and second drummer.

As Nate Dorward writes in the liner notes, the music is “…good-humoredly averse to the predictable, both composerly and collectivist, a set of ten explorations into the musical hinterlands that return to home base logically but by the least obvious of routes.” In short, all new musical discoveries culminating in a hell of a good time.

The CD has earned wide critical acclaim. As Michael Rosenstein writes in Signal To Noise: “Boston-based reed player Charlie Kohlhase is an inveterate jazz explorer. Over the course of the last couple of decades, he’s honed a sensibility that combines an encyclopedic take on the tradition, a personal approach to the intersection of post-bop structuralism and boisterous freedom, and a wicked sense of humor… It’s been a while since Kohlhase has released a recording, but this one shows he’s still hard at work charting new courses into the musical unknown.”

Charlie Kohlhase’s most recent CDs on Boxholder were Play Free or Die, with the Charlie Kohlhase Quintet, and Good Night Songs, with John Tchicai and Garrison Fewell. The John Tchicai trio’s new release recorded live at Birdland, Tribal Ghost, will be released soon. He lives in Chelsea, MA, hosts Boston’s radio program “Research & Development,” and teaches at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge.

“You’d think that, with all the uninspired stuff that’s being promoted in today’s jazz world, genuinely creative artists like Kohlhase and his cohorts would be the talk of every town.” — Duck Baker, CODA

“Pursuing a loose superhero theme wrapped in a string of absurdly punning song titles, Adventures introduces veteran adventurer Charlie Kohlhase’s highly resourceful septet. Powered by two drummers and featuring a blustery front line of two reeds, The Explorers club is a band that can sound like a much larger unit but also shift into raw-boned blowing reminiscent of New York’s loft era.” — James Hale, DownBeat

"Hiro Honshuku is a man of many parts virtuoso flutist, imaginative composer, capable visual artist and gifted teacher. A composer is always heartened to learn he has been an influence in a musician's life; Hiro has taken what he learned from the Lydian Concept and used it as I had intended it to be used to fashion his own unique voice. Drawing from his experience of growing up in Japan, studying European traditional music, and coming to the jazz idiom as a young man, his music is pan-cultural and compelling. He is supported superbly by Gustavo Assis-Brasil on guitar and Jose´ Pienasola on bass; this ensemble listens to each other, and the result is a very worthwhile musical experience."- George Russell

“While playing, the pianist [Dred Scott] sometimes gets antsy and stands up, a la Jerry Lee Lewis. It’s a move that reminds just how physical his music can be—especially a piece like “Mojo Rhythm.” Splash is part of this group’s persona. This summer at Newport they made groggy morning crowd act midnightish. For the last three years at this downtown venue, they’ve been making a midnightish crowd act rockish (meaning whoopish). Blending pop, bop, pulse, and clatter, they get to a place that swings on its own terms. And they entertain as well. Prep for the Halloween gig by donning your ‘anything goes’ psyche.”

10:00 PM Nathan Reich

Nathan Reich celebrates the release of his first full length album "Arms Around a Ghost", performing in concert with his band. He will be joined by friend Tamsin Wilson who celebrates the release of her EP 'West to East.'

Joining Nathan on the Lily Pad stage will be:
•Alexandra Spalding – cello & backup vocals
•Tommy Bohlen – pedal steel

***********
Show Line Up:
10-10:45pm – Tamsin Wilson www.myspace.com/tamsinwilsonmusic
11-11:45pm – Nathan Reich www.myspace.com/nathanreich
12-12:45am – Christopher Barnes www.myspace.com/thechristopherbarnes

The creation of Arms Around a Ghost took a few twists and turns during its original start date. After recording the basic tracking for a few of the songs with a friend from school, Nathan set out on a backpacking trip through Israel and Egypt. A few months later he returned and was approached by Adrian Olsen who ended up engineering, producing and mixing the record from his home studio; located on a peaceful horse ranch in Virginia. During the first session the members of Annie and the Beekeepers passed through the ranch for a few days and contributed much of the recorded instrumentation such as bass, cello and pedal steel, most of which was tracked live, giving the record a very honest feel.

The original idea was to create a record that would be sonically much different then his live show by experimenting with new types of percussion and layered production, but once in the studio it became clear that many of the songs seemed more fitting either solo, or sparsely arranged. The song “Two Winter Birds” is one of the more intimate and haunting tracks on the record and the low-fi hiss of “Where the Sun Goes” sounds like it could have been recorded on a tape player in the living room. While on the other hand “Virginia” ended up straying the farthest from Nathan’s usual melancholy sound and ventured into heavy drum pounding production.

"The pictures that Paper Planes paint go far beyond lyrics. The group's indie-folk blend weaves simple and elegant string parts and tasteful pedal steel volume swells. The musical intricacies of "The Hard Stuff" and "So Gratefully" are as dreamlike and wondrous as Roald Dahl's classic novel James and the Giant Peach, while still retaining a mature, professional sound." - The Groove

"Pastoral indie-folk with subdued vocals and glittering acoustic guitar." - CMJ
