Jarrett Cherner - piano, compositions
Jorge Roeder - acoustic & electric bass
Jorge Pérez-Albela - drums & percussion

The Jarrett Cherner Trio performs music rooted in the jazz piano tradition, blending contemporary influences with those of world music. Latin rhythms mixed with jazz swing propel improvisations within a modern harmonic framework. With an original repertoire of compositions from pianist and composer Cherner, the trio has been attracting audiences consisting of both veteran jazz fans and those new to jazz. On the trio’s recently released debut album Burgeoning, the trio takes the listener on a journey though a range of sonic moods, from the angular groove of “Stand Your Own”, through the raucous, bluesy shuffle “Sucker Punch”, to the introspective melody featured in “Somebody Quietly”. In performance the trio is equally dynamic, constantly searching for new places to take the music and always willing to take the risks that will lead the way.

Though not their birthplace, all three musicians have emerged from the vibrant Boston jazz scene; Cherner and Roeder met while studying at the New England Conservatory, and Pérez-Albela is a Berklee alumnus. From San Francisco, Jarrett Cherner earned degrees in both music and math while studying and working in Boston. His compositions, recently honored by the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards, are both melodic and logical and his playing evokes a Keith Jarrett like penchant for lyricism in addition to a rhythmic influence indicative of his studies with Danilo Pérez. From Lima, Perú, bassist Jorge Roeder adds his warm tone and unshakable beat to the trio, rounding out the low end. Whether soloing, comping, or dialoging with the band, Roeder’s lines are consistently swinging and freshly musical. Then there’s drummer Jorge Pérez-Albela, also from Lima. You never know when he’ll slide off his drum set in favor of his cajón or to play an assortment of percussion instruments (take a listen to “Shake The Cage”). Equally at home swinging and playing Latin rhythms, Pérez-Albela’s rapid responsiveness combined with his rhythmic arsenal keep the trio on its toes.

The Trio has performed at the San Jose Jazz Festival (CA), Sonoma Jazz Festival (CA), JazzZone (Lima, Perú), Jazz at Pearl's (San Francisco, CA), Jazzschool (Berkeley, CA), Vibrato (Los Angeles, CA), La Ve Lee (Los Angeles, CA), 2nd St. Jazz (Los Angeles, CA), Ryles Jazz Club (Cambridge, MA), Acton Jazz Cafe (Acton, MA), Lily Pad (Cambridge, MA), Rockwood Music Hall (NYC, NY), LV's Uptown (Portland, OR), among others. Members of the trio have toured both nationally and internationally, performing at venues such as: Jamboree, Barcelona; El Café Central, Madrid; Sunside, Paris; Regattabar, Boston; Berklee Performance Center, Boston; and Yoshi's, Oakland. They have also performed or recorded with Herbie Hancock, Kenny Werner, Roy Haynes, Maria Schneider, the Either/Orchestra, the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, & Amphis Baena, among others.

New York based Pianist, Composer, and Educator Jarrett Cherner was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. After completing degrees in Mathematics at Tufts University (2003, Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and Jazz Piano Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music (2004), he returned to the west coast, becoming an active and in-demand pianist on the vibrant West Coast jazz scene.

While based in San Francisco, Cherner performed with (among many others) the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, Collective West Jazz Orchestra, Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra, Kasey Knudsen Sextet, Fred Randolph Quintet, Terrence Brewer, Orquesta Bakan, and ran one of the city’s best weekly jazz jam sessions (JazzOnMonday: with Mike Olmos, DeeJay Foster/David Ewell/Eric Markowitz, & Jeff Marrs) at Grant & Green in North Beach.

Cherner has toured nationally and internationally, performing at venues such as Yoshi’s (Oakland, CA), Jazz at Pearl’s (San Francisco), Jazzschool (Berkeley, CA), JazzZone (Lima, Perú), Jamboree (Barcelona, Spain), Smalls (New York, NY), La Ve Lee (Los Angeles, CA), Ryles Jazz Club (Cambridge, MA), Jordan Hall (Boston, MA), and festivals including Festival de Jazz Lima (Perú), San Francisco Jazz Festival (CA), San Jose Jazz Festival (CA), Fillmore Jazz Festival (CA), Sonoma Jazz Festival (CA), and the Cape Cod Jazz Festival (MA).

In 2005 Cherner recorded his first album as a leader, Burgeoning, featuring his compositions (which received an honorable mention from the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards) and the talented team of Jorge Roeder on bass and Jorge Pérez-Albela on drums.

Cherner is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City where he studies with Jason Moran. Previous teachers have included Danilo Pérez, Michael Cain, Frank Carlberg, Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Bloom, & Warren Senders.

As an educator, Cherner has been on the faculty at the New York Jazz Academy (2009-), San Jose Summer Jazz Workshop (2007 & 2008), Jazzschool’s Summer Youth Program (2006), Music Maker School (2004-2005), Talented and Gifted Hispanic summer program at UMass Boston (2003), and Summerbridge San Francisco (2002) in addition to maintaining a private studio.
