04/03 Friday

7:00 PM Keppie Coutts

keppiecoutts.net

"...Coutts's songs marry soul and folk so gorgeously, you'll cheer when they get stuck on endless repeat on the jukebox in your brain..."
Boston Globe, September 2008

The Boston Globe (August 2008) -
"Coutts...may remind you Feist and Ingrid Michaelson."

Keppie is the Australian-born soul-folkstress, submerged and reveling in the new wave of 'folk fusion' – an eclectic melding of acoustic-based song that steps inside jazz and soul.

Since arriving in Boston in 2005, Keppie has recorded with musicians who regularly tour with the likes of Paula Cole and Mary Chapin Carpenter, as well as studying with teachers and mentors of Gillian Welch and John Mayer. She has won the praise of peers, audiences and mentors.

Keppie started out spreading her words as poetry at local Sydney arts haunts and indie spaces. Very quickly the words found a canvas of music, and almost as quickly she was thrust into the recording studio. Chris Dubrow, former front-man of Australian political-industri-rock group Insurge (Sydney Big Day Out, 1997) instantly recognized the strength of Keppie’s writing and brought her into his recording studio, producing her first album, “On the Edge of a Dream”.

The immediate connection that she forms with an audience saw Keppie performing at some of Sydney’s best-known venues for live music, including the Excelsior, the Gaelic Club, the Seymour Centre, and international jazz-hub, The Basement as part of a selection of the city’s best songwriters. Keppie’s collaboration with sound engineer, Jason Mannell (who has produced Oz mega-rock group Jet), and separately with Sean Carey (currently in Oz super band Thirsty Merc), saw the release of “Tears De Picardie” to a sell-out launch show held at the Goldfish Bowl in Sydney’s Kings Cross.

10:00 PM Tim Eriksen: an evening of northern roots music!

“Northern roots is New England songs about life and death, not bed and breakfast.”

The former frontman of the prophetic folk-noise band Cordelia’s Dad, Tim Eriksen has one of the most hair-raising voices in American music. Accompanying himself on fiddle, banjo, guitar and bajo sexto, Tim redefines American tradition with a "northern roots" sound that encompasses old Massachusetts murder ballads, chilling shape-note harmonies and haunted originals alongside southern Appalachian and Irish tunes.

Tim’s singing is solidly rooted in traditional American folksong, and nobody does it better, but to call him a “folksinger” would miss the incredible range of his experience: 25 years playing South Indian veena, screaming hardcore punk in the old days at CBGB, 6 years with an Oromo (Ethiopian) gospel choir, 18 years singing Bosnian folk and pop, studio work with producers like Joe Boyd, T-Bone Burnett and Steve Albini, appearing as a soloist with a symphony orchestra at Carnegie Hall, decades of avant-garde sonic experimentation, most recently in composer Michael Theodore’s multi-media extravaganza “What I Saw at the Apocalypse”…that’s for starters. Known to many for his extensive contributions to the Oscar-winning film “Cold Mountain,” he is also the only musician to have shared the stage with both Kurt Cobain and Doc Watson, and recently collaborated with world-jazz innovator Omar Sosa’s on the new album “Across the Divide” released March 24 on Half Note Records. Tim stops at the Lily Pad on his way to a six-night run with Sosa at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club.

This is a rare local opportunity to experience the intensity of this one-of-a-kind musician up close and personal. (Eriksen’s last Boston area solo appearance was at the Fleet Center with Ralph Stanley and Alison Krauss on the Great High Mountain Tour in 2004). The evening’s program is a hypnotic combination of ancient New England ballads, old-time Appalachian favorites and originals, including selections from an upcoming CD of solo unaccompanied songs and Tim’s unique, virtuosic arrangements for bajo sexto (twelve string acoustic bass). Seats are limited, so come early – and stay late to hang out after the show!

Tickets: $10 at door

Tim will be featured on Radio Boston on Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th at 1 p.m. Listen on the radio at WBUR 90.9FM or online at www.wbur.org/listen

10:00 PM Dan Arcamone Trio

High-energy grooves are as common to this trio as are delicate soundscapes. Dan’s unique touch on the guitar is founded in jazz tradition while continually drawing from other forms of music. Arcamone is also commonly seen as a sideman with various groups, most notably The Damon Grant Project. Dan has performed at the Berkshire Jazz Festival, the Litchfield Jazz Festival, the Norwalk Jazz Festival, the Norwalk Oyster Festival, and the New Haven Arts and Ideas Festival. His guitar playing can be heard extensively on two CD’s by The Damon Grant Project entitled, “Improvisation” and “Sonidos Nuevos”. He can also be heard on The LP Passion for Music CD Vol 6. Arcamone’s first album, Trioisms, was released in 2008 and features 13 of his original compositions. His trio was awarded “Best Jazz Band” by the Fairfield County Weekly’s Grand Band Slam Reader’s Poll in 2005 and 2007. The current line-up features Dan Arcamone, Rich Zurkowski, and Tom Ash on guitar, bass, and drums.

Jolly Hockey sticks! For Charlie Holford, a well-to-do English lad of eighteen years, boarding school life is finally over. He’s happy to wake up at home knowing he has his entire Summer ahead of him, but as quickly as it takes to infuse a mug of tea and jam a slice of toast on the first morning, he feels trapped. Even parties at posh-totty-teaser, spoilt-little-rich-kid Polly Marshall’s house don’t fulfill him anymore. No. He longs for another. A young woman he met the previous Summer on a holiday across the water, thousands of miles away. He feels the desire to find Sarah Hayes in his very being. Re-igniting the ashes of his empty social life, he journeys, takes the big risk, begins to walk across the coals from adolescence to adulthood. Charlie Holford returns to New York City to find his flicker of light, his flame, his fire. -x-

7:00 PM The Ogre Battle: All the Rock that Flies

Featuring:
Neon God, A Bit Much, and Dangur

A BIT MUCH pits Degan (of Fetish Chicken), John T. Montgomery (of Paraffin Section), and Matt Lillis (of Project Mayhem) against the collected works of the last four hundred years. After spending years properly grooming their facial hair to avoid all those painful Jethro Tull comparisons, they can afford the eclecticism and factionalism of the White Album or Houses of the Holy, suffused with the “thunder-storm” dynamics of Quadrophenia, and the dragon-citing bombast of Queen II, and the spiraling knee-jerk guitar quips of Marquee Moon. But moreover and mostly, A Bit Much is dedicated to providing music shamelessly, for people full of shame.

NEON GOD plays every show as if it were it's last. This Boston-based 3 piece takes the stage in a very raw, very warm way. Their music is dynamic in mood, feel, volume, energy, color and tempo change. It can be complex and simple and draws influence from the likes of The Velvet Underground, Stooges, James Gang, PJ Harvey, early ZZ Top and Woody Guthrie to name just a few. William Dwyer, the band's songwriter/guitarist/vocalist writes mainly about loves won and lost, personal victories and failings, hoping those doing wrong in the world pay dearly and sometimes just about finding people to party with in many different ways.

DANGUR: Self-proclaimed 'ROCK & ROLL FUZZ' comprised of Western Mass babies with an affinity for girth, riffs, beards, feeding back, scowling, howling, jowling?, unconcealed love for Black Sabbath, somewhat-concealed love for Prince, and power chords galore. Ingredients combine in the proverbial feeding-bag with somewhat obvious overtones of Black Flag-and Melvins-influence, amongst other fresh produce.

7:00 PM Chillgroove

Three guys walk into a studio (stop me if you've heard this one). Tim Casey, Hayim Kobi and Kerry Maxwell set up a ton of equipment both cutting edge and ancient, tune up, hit record, and then improvise for hours.

Later they edit the results and come up with a near-perfect pop album, "Chillgroove" (LBCD58). The CD is universally hailed,

Tim (guitar, keys, vocals) is a pop/ambient music freak (think Beatles meet Brian Eno). Hayim (keys, drumming) was born and raised in the mideast and has a deep love of Arabian beats (and a closet full of rare instruments to boot) as well as the latest software synths. Kerry (guitar) is from Venus - he owns more music than you've ever heard, he builds his own guitar stompboxes, and his influences aren't even necessarily from the world of music.

They'll be joined by newer players Noam Sender (improvised vocals, percussion, ney, and zurna) and Glenn Williams (bass, keys).

Listen to their stuff at myspace.com/chillgrooveboston or at lowbudgetrecords.com.

If you like Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, David Bowie and Brian Eno or all those old Nonesuch and Smithsonian LPs of world music, or if you just feel like dancing, you'll like this show.

Saxophonist Bob Mover

At the age of 21, Mover joined Charles Mingus for a stay of five months at
the Five Spot in New York City. He then joined Chet Baker’s group for 9
months before leaving for Brazil in 1974. During his six months stay, he
worked with samba legends Johnny Alf (the “father of Bossa Nova”) and
Lucio Alves.

Upon his return to New York City in 1975, he rejoined Baker. They worked
regularly in New York City clubs, as well as performing at Carnegie Hall,
Avery Fisher Hall and touring the mid-west and California. In the summer
of that year, he made his first European appearances with Chet Baker at La
Grande Parade du Jazz (Nice, France), Jazz Festival Laren (Holland) and
the Middleheim Jazz Festival (Antwerp, Belgium), where they played
opposite Sarah Vaughan. This concert was filmed for European television
and a review appeared in the Belgian press, which described Mover as “a 23
year old revelation”.

At the end of 1975, Bob went out on his own, leading his own groups around
NYC and elsewhere. His first working band featured Tom Harrell (trumpet)
and the late Jimmy Garrison (bass). Critic, Chuck Berg, wrote in Downbeat
“Mover is a poet/philosopher whose music rings with a profundity that
speaks to both heart and mind...Mover´s voice is his own, worth listening
to...carefully." From 1976 to the end of 1979, he led his own quartets and
quintets every Sunday and Monday night playing to packed houses at Sweet
Basil in Greenwich Village.

Featured sidemen included pianists Kenny Barron, Mike Nock, and the late
Albert Dailey as well as, bassists Buster Williams, Ron McLure and Denis
Irwin, trumpeters Harrell and Claudio Roditi, and most often the
underrated master, Ben Riley on drums.

In 1976 and 1977, he made is first two recordings under his own name– On
The Move (Choice) and Bob Mover (Vanguard) – the latter, having received a
4 ½ star review in Downbeat Magazine. He worked as a sideman with Duke
Jordon, Matthew Gee, Albert Dailey, Vinnie Burke and others and often
subbed for Russell Procope in a trio with pianist Brooks Kerr and Duke
Ellington’s long time drummer, Sonny Greer. During this period, Bob also
co-led a group with Lee Kontiz. They played in concerts and clubs in the
USA and Canada and recorded an album under Konitz’s name, Affinity – The
Lee Konitz Quintet (Chiaroscuro) (that also received a 4 ½ stars in
Downbeat).

In 1981, Bob resided in Boston where he taught improvisation workshops at
Berklee College of Music in Boston while holding down regular gigs at
Michial’s Pub and Pooh’s Pub with his quartet (Joe Cohn or Mick Goodrich
on guitar, the late Charlie LaChapelle on bass and the legendary Boston
drummer Bobby Ward). He also played in the quintet of pianist Art Matthews
with young trumpeter, Wallace Roney as his front line partner.

Rejoining Chet Baker in March, 1981 they toured France, Belgium, the
Nederlands, Austria and Germany while making two recordings – Chet Baker
Live at Clubs Salt Peanuts Köln Volumes 1, and 2 (Circle) “an added bonus
to these discs is the astounding alto playing of Bob Mover”, (Bob Oakley,
Jazz Journal, 1990,Chet Baker the Wages of Lyricism).

7:00 PM Frank Carlberg Quintet

celebrating the new CD release

"The American Dream" on Red Piano Records

Red Piano Records, a new, artist run, Brooklyn based recording label, could not have chosen a more auspicious musical event for its debut release than pianist/composer Frank Carlberg’s The American Dream.

Brilliantly conceived and stunningly executed by an ensemble (made up) of some of Mr. Carlberg’s most reliable and longstanding associates, The American Dream is a jazz suite cum political cri de couer built around 12 short poems by the late Robert Creeley. The poems have been situated by Mr. Carlberg in musical contexts that extend and enhance the linguistic economy and emotional candor that characterize much of Mr. Creeley’s greatest work.

featuring
Christine Correa-voice
John O'Gallagher-saxophones
Frank Carlberg-piano
Jorge Roeder-bass
Michael Sarin-drums
Cover $10

Carlberg does a masterful job blending the music and words, the results sounding so organic. The melodies wrap around the words with ease and the solos never seem obligatory. His music is melodic, challenging, intelligent, and fiercely original. Many projects that attempt to blend poetry with creative music sound stilted but, over his career, Carlberg has proven that one can take these two art forms and make something quite special.
-Richard Kamins-Hartford Courant-

“with its on-the-mark musical, vocal and piano interpretations, adventurous rhythm section explorations and expressive dual sax playing, Carlberg has shown that sh*t can flow uphill In The Land of Art”.
-Elliott Simon-AllAboutJazz-

“…..both a romp and a haunt, joyful and grey, this music streams with nourishing beauty”.
-Dan Oullette-DownBeat-

Never mind the fact that he plays in a bazillion bands, has shared the stage with some true legends, and performed at Carnegie Hall. The future is looking bright for Austin McMahon. His tastefulness as a drummer has certainly informed the restrained but punchy nature of his compositional style..."

Pianist Erik Deutsch effortlessly between genres unlike any musician working today. Equally comfortable rocking with Trevor Dunn, improvising with Ellery Eskelin, recording house tracks with Mr. V, singing with Erin McKeown, and grooving with Charlie Hunter, this musical maniac might be the hardest working man in the “jazz-business.”

Currently a resident of Brooklyn, NY, Erik has been a permanent member of the Charlie Hunter Trio for nearly three years, and is featured on the group’s last two releases Mistico and Baboon Strength. The trio has performed all over the globe, including stops in Tokyo, Moscow, Istanbul, Kiev, Morocco, and Greece.

Erik is currently working diligently to complete his new album, Hush Money. Due out this summer, the music reflects a unique balance between the chamber-esque cinematic composition of Deutsch’s previous record, Fingerprint, with the rhythm and blues esthetic of Charlie Hunter. Throw in a heavy dose of Erik’s extensive arsenal of analog synthesizers and Hush Money is surely the most wide-ranging recording of his career.

“Erik Deutsch, a pianist with a taste for tuneful provocation, is an especially valuable resource as a solo commentator and accompanist…” – NY Times
