Starts next week!
Everyone rest tonight.

01/04 Sunday

2:00 PM New Music for Flute and Percussion

Kelli Kathman and Bill Solomon play Ryan Vigil's new 50-minute work for alto flute and percussion. The piece features Kelli playing lots of long notes with varying amounts of vibrato - and some short notes too. The piece also features bill rubbing and scraping things like drum-heads and cymbals as softly as possible - he also plays a crotale and a prayer bowl from time to time.

– 10pm, Thursdays* in 2009@ the Lily Pad

Beginning Jan. 8 with Gauchometer (Dan Blake, Leo Genovese) & High School (Adam Dotson, Jason Nazary, Dave Sleininger, Joe Moffett)

The Lily Pad, 40 Prospect St., Central Square, Cambridge
All Ages, $10 / $7 for students and seniors

*due to a special event Jan. 22, Hear Here will move for one week to Wednesday, Jan. 21

Hear Here - a Thursday late night series at the Lily Pad, commences Jan. 8, 2009. At 10pm each Thursday night, the Lily Pad will host new and/or too-little-heard projects by hard-working musicians, composers, and improvisers from Boston and beyond.

On Jan. 8, the Lily Pad will welcome saxophonist Daniel Blake and pianist Leo Genovese for the Boston debut of Gauchometer. These longtime collaborators will be interacting live with a constantly evolving electronic sound world as they perform pieces from their forthcoming CD, “Signs of Transcendence”. Daniel, an ASCAP composition winner, has performed in bands led by Richard Gallo, Richie Barshay, Charlie Kohlhase, Sofie Koutsivitis, and currently co-runs the De Facto Music Series at the Brooklyn Lyceum. Argentinian Leo Genovese has been in high demand as a sideman since he came to the States. Currently, he tours the world with Esperanza Spalding.

Also performing the first night will be High School, featuring Adam Dotson on euphonium, Dave Sleininger on guitar, Jason Nazary playing drums and electronics, and Joe Moffett on trumpet. Compositions by all the participants draw on a dirty, punky, indy aesthetic. Imagine a collision between out jazz, ala Joe Morris, Gerald Cleaver, or even Dave Douglas (all of whom Dotson has worked as a sideman) and textural indie rock along the lines of Neutral Milk Hotel and Can. And now, imagine the same thing with a euphonium.

Each month, Hear Here will reflect the tastes of a guest curator from the Lily Pad extended family. Alec Spiegelman has put together the inaugural month, to feature Jim Hobbs & The Fully Celebrated Orchestra, Eric Hofbauer’s Infrared Band, NYC singer-songwriter Noam Weinstein, and much more. Expect great music and some novel collaborations each week.

The Boston Globe calls Brazilian-born Andrei Matorin an "emerging jazz violinist" and featured him in their Critic’s Picks column twice in 2008 next to the likes of jazz greats such as Bill Charlap, Jim Hobbs, and John Patitucci. As a composer, Andrei’s music seamlessly blends the harmonic and rhythmic intensity of jazz with the emotion and sensitivity of classical music while alluding to the soaring melodies of his native Brazil. As a student at Berklee College of Music, he has been honored with Berklee's Achievement Award on two separate occasions.

Andrei Matorin is also an alumnus of Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead 2008 Program at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, an exclusive program that "identifies outstanding, emerging jazz artists in their mid-teens and twenties" from an international pool of applicants. Look out for his debut album available February 2009.

10:00 PM Hear Here

Hear Here - a Thursday late night series at the Lily Pad. At 10pm each Thursday night, the Lily Pad will host new and/or too-little-heard projects by hard-working musicians, composers, and improvisers from Boston and beyond.

Altoist Jim Hobbs brings the Fully Celebrated Orchestra out of hibernation to perform songs from a forthcoming release (May 09, mark your calendars!)
- with Timo Shanko and Django Carranza

"The Fully Celebrated Orchestra is a completely-dedicated hardcore Freedom Jazz ensemble from Boston, Mass. This is fiercely-played jazz, not for the weak of heart. It is smart music with a sly sense of humor, played with a passion that is rarely seen in this modern age. One of the leaders of the new school of jazz iconoclasts that are as comfortable in rock clubs as they are playing with jazz legends."

&

Kristin Slipp and Joe Moffett are "Gleason's Twins", presenting new art songs for a bare bones ensemble of trumpet and voice.

Kristin has an amazing and unique voice that you may have heard with Cuddle Magic, or with Fred Frith at any number of recent jazz festival performances. Joe is wonderful trumpet player who you should have heard on Jan. 8 with the High School Quartet. If you missed that, shame on you ... don't miss this one!

7:00 PM The Tropics

formed when most of the band members relocated to Cambridge in summer 2008. Their evolving and rotating lineup includes a guitarist/vocalist from the jazz and folk scene in New York City, a bass player from North Carolina who studied classical guitar in Argentina, a drummer working with jazz guru Bob Moses, a multi-instrumentalist recently arrived from Portland, ME and a guitarist specializing in the blues who plays in several local bands here in Boston. The Tropics attempt to conflate these varied influences into a new sound that draws from the distinct backgrounds of the musicians while still maintaining a sense of unity. This genre falls under the large umbrella of rock music while not quite fitting into any particular label. And when playing live, their tight song structures give way to some wild improvisations. Come see if they can pull it off and you might even find out their names.

9:30 pm Where Astronauts Go To Hide:

Where Astronauts Go To Hide is the current expression of songs by Minneapolis-native Joshua Pederson. In 2007, Pederson moved to Chicago to transfer schools and attend the city's prestigious School of the Art Institute. After a year of attendance he has chosen the School has little to offer him and has temporarily put his education on hold. He currently lives in Chicago and primarily focuses on spreading his music to anyone willing to listen. Where Astronauts Go To Hide's debut full-length, "The Tragic Wreck of the Hexxus,"was released in February 2008, has received great reviews by very random publications.

Joshua has currently been touring in support of the newer songs that will be featured on his forthcoming, as-of-yet untitled album, set to be released on By Land or By Sea in Spring of 2009. This record is expected to have some well-known Chicago based special guests, in addition to some other friends doing the instrumentation, so listeners are encouraged to stay tuned.

10:30 pm Brett Saxon:

Brett Saxon, a Minneapolis native and more recent resident of Brooklyn, NY, has signed his lease amendment and is hitting the road for a series of tours, bringing him through every nook and cranny of the nation in support of his debut full length record, "A Castle Built Too Quickly.", released on By Land or By Sea Records this past July. Brett's songs bring back the story-telling folk styles of yesteryear, and will always leave the listener feeling a little nostalgic, and very satisfied.

Vikesh Kapoor w/ tba
$5 at the door

Vikesh Kapoor is from rural Pennsylvania and plays American folk music. Billboard.com says:

"....Kapoor is no gimmick; he is a true folk aficionado whose music references traditionalists like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. His fiery performances have inspired a frenzy of hooting and hollering at house shows, communal foot stomping at P.A.'s Lounge and even captured the attention of Josh Ritter, for whom he played in a moonlit alley outside Club Passim."
