10:00 PM The Final Task
Lincoln Smith and John Lawless, two local Boston composers come together to put on an evening of original music written for large jazz ensemble. John, an experienced film score writer and composer was recently commissioned by the Asheville Symphony in North Carolina to write a string trio to be performed in October. Lincoln Smith meanwhile has performed his music around Boston and abroad in eleven countries. The music features music written for flute, clarinet, soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, two trumpets, two trombones, piano, guitar, bass and drums.
Final Task will be as much a tribute to the artists who have inspired them, as a homage to their roots in the music of Virginia and North Carolina. Lincoln's music will feature Steve Reich inspired composition and jazz improvisation while John's will emphasize third stream orchestration with Wayne Shorter-esque melody and harmony.

The Flatlands Collective brings together the remarkable Dutch alto saxophonist and composer Jorrit Dijkstra with some of Chicago’s most interesting improvisers. In Chicago, one of the most important musical cities in the US, he found a common ground in a more trans-national way of improvising, using open forms, and a looser interpretation of the American jazz tradition. Dijkstra says: ”I believe that the landscape in which you grow up has an effect on how your music sounds. This is what’s so interesting about jazz: musicians in New York, Barcelona, Moscow, Shanghai or Addis Ababa play this music, but there is always a distinctive local interpretation.” And he adds: “I called this group The Flatlands Collective after the landscape heritage I share as a Dutchman with the Chicago players.”
Dijkstra provides most of the compositions, in which he strives towards a balance between composed material, clear guidelines for musicians to improvise, and openness for the most adventurous kinds of improvisations. The group has developed a way of improvising that blends Chicago-style free jazz, texture-based minimalism, and melodic layering into an eclectic yet organically coherent repertoire. Dijkstra’s use of the Lyricon (a vintage analog wind synthesizer from the 1970s) and Fred Lonberg-Holm’s amplified cello adds an electronic touch to the rich variety of ideas, structures, and textures of the group sound. The Flatlands Collective has released their debut CD Gnomade in December 2006 on Skycap records, which has received 4 stars from Downbeat Magazine, and much critical acclaim by the international press.

His heart-felt, sometimes comedic music can make tween girls fight and convicted felons cry. He has hurdled the old scene and over-dressed his way to becoming the best toast -loving ukulele playing guy in Boston.
With his first release on the horizon, Zach Comtois is ready to conquer the worlk, one sappy acoustic song at a time. Hailing from sunny Boston Mass, Zach has been performing for nearly 14 years. His blend of honset lyrics, catchy hooks, and acoustic prowess are sure to please all!

7:00 PM Patrick Breiner
A veteran of the New York jazz scene, Patrick Breiner now resides in Madison, WI and is a member of Billy Hart's "Academy" band, NOOK, Myk Freedman's Whistle Sound Band and Suit, Bing and Ruth, and Greg Heffernan's Sauce.
Patrick chooses to use the alias Vartan Mamigonian while performing his solo saxophone works. He is, after all, not himself while summoning everything from ferocious screams to velvety subtone from his instrument whilst weaving hypnotically rhythmic melodies. Vartan Mamigonian appears in both history and literature as both sinner and saint. Similarly, Breiner's works can be tender or abrasive or anywhere in between.

7:00 PM Alash: Masters of Tuvan Throat Singers
Ayan-ool Sam, Ayan Shirizhik, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar, Nachyn Choodu
Tuvan throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted young group from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies, western instruments, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music, but its overall sound and spirit is decidedly Tuvan. The musicians were trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood. In 1999, as students at Kyzyl Arts College, they formed a traditional ensemble. At the same time they learned about western music, practiced on hybrid Tuvan-European instruments, and listened to new trends coming out of America. They are inspired by the music of their grandparents and the great Tuvan and Central Asian musicians, but also influenced by jazz and rock as they look for new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music.
Alash collaborates with musicians of all stripes, from the avant-garde jazz Sun Ra Arkestra to the classical Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. They appear as guest artists on a new CD by Grammy winning Béla Fleck & the Flecktones ("Jingle All the Way," released fall of 2008), and they will tour with the Flecktones this December. Yet they remain deeply committed to their own ancestral heritage, winning multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions, both as an ensemble and as individual musicians.
Alash’s inaugural U.S. tour was sponsored in 2006 by the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then, they have returned to tour extensively, playing to enthusiastic audiences and presenting workshops to eager students of all ages. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning,” quipping that after the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.”
The members of Alash are:
Nachyn Choodu: vocals, byzaanchy, chadagan. Kyzyl Arts College. First prize for best duo with his wife Shonchulai, 2008 Xöömei Symposium.
Bady-Dorzhu Ondar: vocals, igil, doshpuluur, guitar. Kyzyl Arts College. Best soloist, 2005 All-Russian
Festival of traditional ensembles and orchestras. Best in Maxim Dakpai xöömei competition, 2006. Named People’s Xöömeizhi, 2007. Grand prize, Üstüü-Xüree Festival, 2008.
Ayan-ool Sam: vocals, doshpuluur, chanzy, igil, guitar. Republic School of the Arts. Kyzyl Arts College.
