7:00 PM The Never / Windmills / Twain
The Never are a conceptual pop rock band from Chapel Hill, NC, touring in anticipation of their 3rd full-length, a follow-up to Antarctica: a storybook record, released on Trekky Records in 2006. Inspired by the read-along records of your childhood, Antarctica is a full album coupled with a fully illustrated storybook. Complete with 40 oil paintings by Noah Smith, the story and songs follow the journey of a country boy on his way to return a nuclear bomb to the city. The album is arranged in such a way that one can listen to the songs and read along; enjoying music, art and written word simultaneously.
"Confident, competent, and altogether charming"
- Delusions of Adequacy
"There's something instantly endearing about a band that intentionally bucks trends. The inherent bravery required to step apart from the pack can be irresistible, especially when the music by the band in question is top-shelf quality."
-Billboard
"[The Never] had their go at a concept album, and, not only do they nail the mark, they’ve practically reinvented the idea."

Windmills (Boston, MA) play the complex and beautiful compositions from students at Berklee College of Music.
the music of twain happens in Mat Davidson's room, but that's as
much as he can take credit for. the actual creative process can be
attributed to Five Ghosts (cherry ghost, hairy ghost, scary ghost,
weary ghost, fairy ghost) whose dispositions are curt, but never
hostile. they arrive unannounced, sometimes in twos, or altogether,
but never alone. of the Five, two play instruments, two sing and
write, and the fifth, who doesn't seem to have any outward involvement
in the music at all, mostly just reads books and encourages the other
four. mat doesn't really mind the Ghosts, but he probably wouldn't
miss them too much if they didn't come back...

7:00 PM Steven Greenman/Walter Mahovlich duo of Jewish (Klezmer) and East European Gypsy folk music
Please welcome Walt Mahovlich (clarinet), frequently here in the Boston area and a regular at Balkan Night. Steven Greenman (violin) was featured at the Lowell folk festival last year with his band, Stempenyu's Dream. Together, they are on fire. They also comprise two sixths of the great Cleveland Eastern European music band, Harmonia; and are original members of the international Klezmer band, Budowitz. Having them appear and perform together is a Boston-area first. Let's make them feel welcome. And do come to enjoy some amazing music.
It's confirmed! Steven Greenman (violin) and Walt "Vlado" Mahovlich (clarinet) will be in the Boston area in about two weeks to play some freaking amazing Eastern European music. We rushed to find a venue and managed to rent the Lily Pad 7pm, Aug 4. Now to fill it! The duo, 2/5 of the Cleveland world music band, Harmonia (as well as members of the original Budowitz) will be playing a wild array of Eastern European folk music: balkan, Rom, klezmer. Boston Balkan music fans will know Walt from his many appearances at Balkan night. Steven, of course, is renowned for his Eastern European klezmer roots recording with Zev Feldman, Khevrisa, as well as his more recent, and stunning release, Stempenyu's Dream. This is likely to be the most fun you can have on a week night any time soon. I intend to bring my copy of the Shalom Aleichem story after which Steven named his band for autographing ;-).
SPREAD THE WORD!
Steven Greenman - Jewish and Gypsy Violinist
Steven Greenman is recognized internationally as one of the finest practitioners of traditional East European Jewish klezmer violin. As a composer of klezmer music he is producer and lead performer for the recording Stempenyu's Dream which contains his original Jewish and klezmer compositions. A co-founder of the Khevrisa ensemble together with Walter Zev Feldman, Steven is also co-producer and lead performer of the recording Khevrisa-European Klezmer Music on the Smithsonian Folkways label. Steven currently leads the Stempenyu's Dream ensemble, Di Tsvey and the Steven Greenman Klezmer Ensemble. He has taught klezmer music at KlezKamp, KlezKanada, KlezFest London, Internationales Klezmer Festival Fuerth and Klezmer Wochen Weimar and has performed at the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, Poland and at Toronto's Ashkenaz-A Festival of New Yiddish Culture. In addition to klezmer music Steven is an accomplished performer of Hungarian nota, Romanian lautari music and urban East European Gypsy music and is a co-founder and performer with the ensemble Harmonia. As a concert performer Steven has been a regular guest soloist with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra performing his own arrangements of traditional East European Gypsy violin music and klezmer music.
Walt Mahovlich, Accordion
Harmonia's founder, Walt Mahovlich, grew up listening to the Croatian and Hungarian music of his family. He got his start playing Croatian and Macedonian weddings at the age of 19, and spent much of his youth playing with traditional village musicians. He's played extensively at traditional events for East European immigrant communities throughout the United States and Canada as well as in frequent concert tours of Europe. His career has included performances at Smotra Foklora in Zagreb, Croatia, the Smithsonian's Festival of American Folklife, Jimmy Carter's Inaugural, the Rededication of Ellis Island, the Bicentennial Celebration of the Constitution in Philadelphia as well as performances in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Walt made his off-Broadway debut in Tony Kushner's adaptation of the S. Ansky classic, A Dybbuk, performing at New York's Public Theater and appeared in the film, The Suicide. Walt's been a faculty member at the Balkan Arts Music Camp as well as director of the Cleveland Tamburitzans. His album, Nova Domovina: Balkan Slavic Music from the Industrial Midwest won the Unesco award for ethnomusicology. In addition to appearing on CDs with Harmonia Walt's clarinet playing is also featured on Budowitz: Mother Tongue on the Koch International label.

10:00 PM The Julien Kasper Band
Julien Kasper is a superb guitarist ... a dynamic and fluent player with a rich mind full of musical ideas. This is a terrific musician who should not be missed.
— Allan Chase The Portsmouth Herald
"Kasper's playing is authoritative and adventurous. With forays into jazz
phrasing and high-octane blues, his melodic attack combines equal parts of
Jeff Beck and Hendrix channeled through monumental tone."
-- Guitarist Magazine
"His second album continues to show he's is one of New England's real musical treasures. The CD is a sparkling sample of Kasper's versatility ... marvelous interplay... virtuoso fretwork... delectable melody... stunning command of tone and phrasing...
— Jay Miller Patriot Ledger
"Julien Kasper again proves he is one of the finer rock guitar instrumentalists around. He’s got great chops and feel and unquestionable tone. In fact, the sounds of the guitars are damn near perfect. And best of all, the compositions here are well-written."
— John Heidt Vintage Guitar
"Berklee’s ax-wielding professor of Hendrixian studies and Beckology puts the lie once more to the old “those-who-can’t-play-teach” canard with this ripping, live-to-tape date, his second. Grounded in jazz-rock and funk, featuring more guitar tones than a ZZ Top compilation, and all done with a minimum of crotch-grabbing, “The New Imperial” gives a good name to guitar heroics. Download: “8 to 11.”
— Kevin R. Convey Boston Herald
"Wes Montgomery greatly complicated my life by hipping me to jazz," writes Julien Kasper. Way to go, Wes! Kasper's ballsy - yet - breathy tone (think Holdsworth, Frisell) is grafted onto lithe, elastic compositions that breath fusion fire through Texas teeth.
The eclectic [guitarist] suggests that "John Coltrane and Miles Davis have far more in common with Hendrix and Beck than most jazz guitarists." Building his style from that perspective, Kasper displays the kind of righteous control, dead-on phrasing, progressive composition, and savvy ears that make Eric Johnson's music so appealing... This guy is really, really good - somebody give him a record deal quick!"

10:00 PM Anna Vogelzang/Emilyn Brodsky
Anna Vogelzang is unavoidably soulful. She has major vocals. She was a vocal major. Anna started writing terrible poetry when she turned 13 and started playing the guitar because she wanted to be like Jewel. Later in her young adult years she traveled & lived in lots of different cities, sharing stages with awesome folks like: Mirah, Franz Nicolay (The Hold Steady), Wye Oak, Ecstatic Sunshine, Winterpills, Charlotte Martin, & Casey Dienel (White Hinterland). She also performed as a vocalist with The Dresden Dolls all around the country, notably at Lollapalooza 2006 & on NPR's World Cafe. During college she wrote a lot of essays about music and made two real records, the second of which (The Things That Airplanes Do) served as her senior thesis & was mastered at Capitol Records in glamtastic Hollywood by Ron McMaster (Diana Krall, The Beach Boys, Gwen Stefani). The Pittsburgh City Paper called her "an erudite pop star in the making" when she released it; she graduated in 2007 with a BFA in Creative Music Production from Carnegie Mellon University. Now she's living the starving singer-songwriter's dream in Chicago where she hosts an open mic every week & plays around town all the time, much to the shagrin of her beauty sleep. She also drives all over the country playing music with her friends on DIY tours, and plans to keep on doing it no matter what - even if the gas prices make it impossible.
Emilyn Brodsky is 22 year old singer-songwriter who couldn't bring herself to learn how to play the guitar, so instead she plays the ukulele. She writes simple songs about complex feelings and is a big fan of tight harmonies and aggressive charm. Emilyn grew up in Westchester, New York home to Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jay-Z and Beyonce, and Xavier's Institute for Higher Learning. She has had the good fortune to play with some seriously amazing people. Would you like some examples? You got it!: The Dresden Dolls, The Gossip, The Magnetic Fields, The Decemberists, The Hold Steady, The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Langhorne Slim, Kimya Dawson, Ani Difranco, and Pete Seeger. She thinks that's a pretty impressive list. She has a self-released album of home recordings, a split 7-inch with Mirah on Third Story Records, and you can now pre-order her first full-length studio album from Third Story Records, Emilyn Brodsky's Greatest Tits, on which she, very excitingly, is playing with a killer band (Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls, Peter Hess of Balkan Beat Box and The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Franz Nicolay of World/Inferno and The Hold Steady, gorgeous chanteuse Anna Vogelzang, and teen folk phemon Anthony Da Costa)! She is (almost!) a college graduate, having gotten her B.A. in Poetry from The New School University. She lives in New York City on the great island of Manhattan in a lovely and strange house. Sometimes she considers moving out of New York but she couldn't live without good bagels.

Jane Chakravarthy
Visual artist, Contemporary poet.
Jane primarily uses abstract imagery, metaphorical tones and irony to give depth to offer different levels on the way her work is perceived. " I rarely have a preconceived notion of what I will write or paint, my creativity comes from my life or vicariously from other people. I focus my energy to create images or scenes which guide me to purge and create a tangible expression; something I feel. I strive for my work to have a personal message, even if my point is not closed and easily defined. I am happy if my work connects to others, offers them guidance, hope, peace or just a sense acknowledgment on some level. My expression, creating my art is spiritual catharsis for me, I strive to let free my woes, to celebrate my one-ness and embrace our collective consciousness."
Jane has recently returned to Somerville after living in India for three and a half years; there she published her first book of poetry and artwork, Love, its Wrath and others, a collection of poetry, prose and artwork, and had several art shows, one notably at Bangalore's Chitrakala Parishat art institute.
Jane's poetry and or art has been published in various publications both here and in India, she is included in the Bagel Bards anthology 3, and upcoming issues of Luciole Press, Divine Revolution and The Ivory Tower

7:00 PM Qwertysaur, Junta, and Special Fredd
Junta is:
Richard McGuire – vox, alto saxophone
Vinay Bhatt – trumpet, sitar, trombone, euphonium, keys
Justin Mayfield – guitar
Dan Ehramjian - bass
Brandon Williams – drums
Forming from 5 friends frustrated with the local hardcore/punk/emo scene, Junta began their days trying to cover as much ground in musical categories as possible. They began playing in the glory days of high school and have since then performed as often as possible on breaks from college.
With a sound that could always be surprising, they were inspired by the idea that music does not need to be consistent, interrupting a flowing pop song with metal can be funny, and humor is acceptable in serious music. They have been compared to artists such as Mr. Bungle, Frank Zappa, and Otis Redding, and always look to expand on what artists they cite.
Visit them at www.myspace.com/juntajams to hear for yourself.
Qwertysaur is:
Justin Mayfield – guitar
Peter Moffett – drums
Qwertysaur works by the idea that anything that pops into their heads must be captured immediately and articulated, and then built upon. Complexities and technical structures are added afterwards and eventually their headaches become performable songs. Working with only two instruments is the game because it has unique drawbacks but even more advantages. It causes all ideas to be confined to two parts, yet the possibilities are endless, especially with two minds that consistently are trying to push each other beyond themselves.

Here’s what WGBH jazz radio host Eric Jackson has to say about Woodard: “I find Fred’s tone to be warm and inviting, making you want to hear more from him. No matter if he’s playing a ballad, an up tempo tune or an African American spiritual, that warmth shines through.”

8:00 PM Anthology
http://www.anthologyvoices.com/
Anthology is a professional women's vocal quartet. The group came
together with the goal of singing varied repertoire and not limiting
itself to any particular style. Each of the vocalists has a solid
education in classical choral music, and the group's range includes
medieval music, Renaissance madrigals, Romantic
part-songs, and new music hot off the press from local Boston
composers. They also sing folk and jazz, and are hoping to expand
their list of styles even further as they continue to work together.
The common musical thread is a consistently high standard of
performance, and a sense of fun!

7:30 PM Andrei Matorin
The Boston Globe calls Brazilian-born Andrei Matorin an ''emerging jazz violinist'' and recently featured the Andrei Matorin Quartet in their Picks-of-the-Week column next to the likes of jazz greats such as Bill Charlap, Jim Hobbs, and John Patitucci. While studying at Berklee College of Music, he was honored with Berklee's Achievement Award on two separate occasions. He is an alumnus of Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead 2008 Program at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, an exclusive program that ''identifies outstanding, emerging jazz artists in their mid-teens and twenties'' from an international pool of applicants.
After picking up the violin in Boston at the age of 6, Andrei pursued his musical studies in Italy and at the age of 10 enrolled in the prestigious Conservatoire de Geneve in Switzerland. Fate, it seems, would have him eventually return to Boston to study at New England Conservatory's Prep School, where he was the first violinist ever to graduate from its jazz certificate program, then enroll at Berklee College of Music on a scholarship from the World Scholarship Tour to study Jazz Composition and Performance.
Andrei has had the privilege of studying with some of the best jazz musicians and educators in the World like George Garzone, Tiger Okoshi, Tony Malaby, Dave Santoro, and Hal Crook. Andrei has shared a stage with many legendary and up-and-coming jazz greats including Bob Moses, Tiger Okoshi, Rosa Passos, Christian Scott, Oscar Stagnaro, Luques Curtis and Zaccai Curtis, Jason Palmer, Richie Barshay, James Williams just to name a few.
Performing regularly between Boston and New York since the age of 15, Andrei has also been teaching privately as of his first year at Berklee. In addition he is now a Junior Faculty member at the Litchfield Jazz Camp in Connecticut.
