10:00 PM Anna Vogelzang/Emilyn Brodsky
Anna Vogelzang is unavoidably soulful. She has major vocals. She was a vocal major. Anna started writing terrible poetry when she turned 13 and started playing the guitar because she wanted to be like Jewel. Later in her young adult years she traveled & lived in lots of different cities, sharing stages with awesome folks like: Mirah, Franz Nicolay (The Hold Steady), Wye Oak, Ecstatic Sunshine, Winterpills, Charlotte Martin, & Casey Dienel (White Hinterland). She also performed as a vocalist with The Dresden Dolls all around the country, notably at Lollapalooza 2006 & on NPR's World Cafe. During college she wrote a lot of essays about music and made two real records, the second of which (The Things That Airplanes Do) served as her senior thesis & was mastered at Capitol Records in glamtastic Hollywood by Ron McMaster (Diana Krall, The Beach Boys, Gwen Stefani). The Pittsburgh City Paper called her "an erudite pop star in the making" when she released it; she graduated in 2007 with a BFA in Creative Music Production from Carnegie Mellon University. Now she's living the starving singer-songwriter's dream in Chicago where she hosts an open mic every week & plays around town all the time, much to the shagrin of her beauty sleep. She also drives all over the country playing music with her friends on DIY tours, and plans to keep on doing it no matter what - even if the gas prices make it impossible.
Emilyn Brodsky is 22 year old singer-songwriter who couldn't bring herself to learn how to play the guitar, so instead she plays the ukulele. She writes simple songs about complex feelings and is a big fan of tight harmonies and aggressive charm. Emilyn grew up in Westchester, New York home to Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jay-Z and Beyonce, and Xavier's Institute for Higher Learning. She has had the good fortune to play with some seriously amazing people. Would you like some examples? You got it!: The Dresden Dolls, The Gossip, The Magnetic Fields, The Decemberists, The Hold Steady, The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Langhorne Slim, Kimya Dawson, Ani Difranco, and Pete Seeger. She thinks that's a pretty impressive list. She has a self-released album of home recordings, a split 7-inch with Mirah on Third Story Records, and you can now pre-order her first full-length studio album from Third Story Records, Emilyn Brodsky's Greatest Tits, on which she, very excitingly, is playing with a killer band (Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls, Peter Hess of Balkan Beat Box and The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Franz Nicolay of World/Inferno and The Hold Steady, gorgeous chanteuse Anna Vogelzang, and teen folk phemon Anthony Da Costa)! She is (almost!) a college graduate, having gotten her B.A. in Poetry from The New School University. She lives in New York City on the great island of Manhattan in a lovely and strange house. Sometimes she considers moving out of New York but she couldn't live without good bagels.
