by Martin Longley
07 September 2007
BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson was reclining in the bar of the apparently quite chic Hotel Therme in Vals, Switzerland, when he first heard the radically calming sound of Brooklyn pianist Elan Mehler. Immediately captivated, Gilles returned for the next two nights. So now, this young player and composer is making his debut on Peterson's own Brownswood label, easily qualifying as its most reclined issuance to date.
Mehler favours a fairly unusual line-up, his own acoustic piano being matched by the electric Fender Rhodes keys of David Moore. Andrew Zimmerman blows throaty tenor saxophone and Tod Hedrick strokes warm bass. They don't have a drummer in the band, so Mehler's pieces automatically dwell over in the chamber jazz nook. This is beautifully calming music, inwardly-routed and pensive, the players circling around each other in a luminescent pool. Notes are carefully enunciated, making slight repeats, returning figures whilst they're mulled over at length. It's a jazz balm...
The two-keyboard dialogue is reminiscent of the various permutations favoured by Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett in the late-1960s outfits of Miles Davis. There's also a softly chiming layer-building that sounds like Steve Reich's "Electric Counterpoint", as performed by Pat Metheny. There's a distinctiveness to the compositions that's difficult to pin down in terms of jazz precedents. The foursome pay great attention to tone and timbre, texture and tingling, as Zimmerman's tenor luxuriates in its own clear space, each soloist leaning forward naturally when their time comes to take leave of the general clinging. The soloing regime is never clear: it's more of an organic flow. Listen to "The Pale 45s", where Zimmerman's thistled tenor cuts to a sudden high Fender Rhodes phrase, with bowed bass underlay, then Mehler enters with a boldly simple melody figure. This may well be the pianist's quartet, but what they make is very much a collective music...

7:00 PM New West Guitar Quartet
www.newwestguitar.com
What started as a class for individual guitarists became an opportunity
for Perry Smith, John Storie, Brady Cohan, and Matt Roberts to create
a group like none other. In reference to their west coast roots and
passion for new music, the group dubbed themselves the New West
Guitar Quartet (NWGQ).
By arranging classic jazz standards and exploring original
compositions, NWGQ established themselves as a notable jazz group
when they were all students at the University of Southern California.
As music majors, NWGQ collaborated with USC to become the first
group to receive the coveted Thornton Protégé Grant. Since the group
started in 2003 they have performed in major venues throughout
Canada, Japan, Europe and all over the Western United States.
With the release of their second album “Wide Awake” on Art Song
Music, NWGQ focuses to combine the improvisational elements of
jazz with the performance standards of a chamber group. By utilizing
all the colors of the guitar, New West Guitar Quartet creates a new
medium of chamber music.

7:00 PM Rocky Mountains in Cambridge
Featuring a quartet of singer-songwriters who attend the Rocky Mountain Song School every August, including three from metro Boston, and a special guest from Denver:
Charlene DiCalogero
If you've never heard, or heard of, "dark and witty acoustica," here's your chance to see the queen of DWA. Some of Charlene's stuff will remind you of Ani DiFranco—but then again, she knows how to put across some sweet fingerstyle too. Her band “The September Babies” have also played the Pad. Her "Odyssey Songs Vol. 1" CD had a record four tracks played on WUMB as a brand-new artist. She'll bring tunes from that and the highly anticipated Vol. 2. www.amphibiouswrecks.com
Rob Mattson
…is an expert on "The Swedish/Jewish Divide" and other current controversies. He has a Martin and a trained baritone voice, and he's willing to use them. On "New Address," Mattson lets you in on a more intimate, romantic side. "Listen" to both of them on the CD of the same name at www.robertmattson.com
Tim Riordan
Tim always has a notebook and a pen with him. That means he is the kind of songwriter who just keeps getting better and better. Who else would think to write "Philip Seymour Hoffman"? Tim's songs tell stories, and his characters find themselves trying hard and struggling harder. At Song School he earned co-write credit on the song “Reveal” with the amazing Willy Porter. "Pick Me Up" is his first CD. www.robertmattson.com
And special guest, Rob Roper:
There's nobody these Boston songwriters would rather bum a beer off of than Rob Roper. He's a producer, a sideman, and singer-songwriter-wiseguy. Originally from Mississippi, the same state that other hip-swiveling guy is from, he can do country, he can do rock, and he'll remind you of Randy Newman, Neil Young and your funniest best friend. www.robroper.com

This dynamic, four-piece group brings its unique fusion of piano-pop and musicals to life with youthful exuberance and mature musicianship; a combination rarely found in one person, let alone four.
Be prepared to laugh, sing along, stomp your feet and have your brain massaged with the quirkiest music you've never heard. The first 50 people to the show get a free CD.

The Music
This concert will feature an evening of standard and original jazz music. Woodard’s guitar style draws from several influences including, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, George Benson and Sonny Rollins. Woodard also takes sounds from styles other than jazz and adapts them to a jazz format.
Here’s what WGBH jazz radio host Eric Jackson has to say about Woodard: “I find Fred’s tone to be warm and inviting, making you want to hear more from him. No matter if he’s playing a ballad, an up tempo tune or an African American spiritual, that warmth shines through.”
Biographies
Fred Woodard (guitar, leader) has performed extensively with his trio in the northeastern and midwestern United States and southeastern Canada, making appearances at events such as the Providence Jazz and Blues Festival, The Discover Jazz Festival, The Kingfield Jazz and Blues Showcase and the Iowa City Jazz Festival. Woodard has released two CD’s Arrival and 1715 on his own label, Ujam Records. Both of these CDs have received extensive airplay and positive reviews as well. Woodard is currently on the faculty at the Roland Hayes School of Music in Roxbury, MA.
Greg Loughman (bass) has been very active on the Boston jazz scene for a number of years. His musical career has also taken him on tours of Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Czech Republic and Japan. He is also a faculty member at the University of Maine in Augusta, ME.
Yoron Israel (drums) has toured and recorded with musicians such as Abbey Lincoln, Ahmad Jamal, Kenny Burrell, Art Farmer, James Williams and he has recorded four CDs as a leader. He is currently assistant chair of the percussion department at Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA.
