3:00 PM Johnny Carcrash,

the unusual duo of saxophonist Pat Donaher and pianist Jeff Hwaen Ch'uqi, reconvenes at the Lily Pad on Saturday, May 10 . Tapping into a fifteen-year young musical conversation, and the two's very different musical upbringings in classical, jazz and indigenous musics, Johnny Carcrash will perform a set of “instant compositions”, unplanned improvised stuctures that are too tight to be called “free”, and too in the moment to be tunes.

The unusual pairing of American saxophonist Donaher and Peruvian classical pianist Ch'uqi began in 1994 when Jeff was Pat's accompanist at the Eastman School of Music. A close friendship and deep musical relationship began there, and the two started improvising as Johnny Carcrash a couple of years later. The two gave their first concert as Johnny Carcrash (a play on Jeff's name) at the Knitting Factory in New York in 2001, and have since played at many venues in the Boston and New York areas. This is their first duo performance in Boston in nearly five years.

Born near Cuzco, Peru, Hwaen Ch'uqi began his musical studies at the age of five, upon arriving to the United States; he gave his first public recital the following year. He currently holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman, studying
under Natalya Antonova. He quickly distinguished himself as the only pianist to be three times invited as a fellow to the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center. Mr. Ch'uqi has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and improvisor. Most recently, Mr. Ch'uqi was accepted to participate in the Sviatoslav Richter International Piano Competition in Moscow. He will be in Russia in the second half of June, representing his native country.

Donaher’s first CD, On Any Given Day, prompted Cadence Magazine to declare him “…a young talent worth watching”, and he has won as ASCAP Young Jazz Composers' award for his writing. An intense, probing improviser and composer, he is a steady presence on the Boston scene with many varied projects, including the acoustic quintet Lift and the electric No Sale Value. He has performed with such diverse luminaries as Bob Brookmeyer, Bernard Haitink, Benny Carter and Steve Vai.

7:30 PM PRANA and singer-songwriter JENNIFER GREER

www.pranaduo.com

Join soprano and flute duo PRANA and singer-songwriter JENNIFER GREER
for a night of new music.
Soprano Jennifer Ashe and flutist Alicia DiDonato are both well known
in Boston as dynamic performers of new music. As the duo Prana, they
bring breath, energy, and life to repertoire written for the intimate
combination of flute and soprano. Prana explores music that is
delicate, fascinating, and seldom performed. For this concert, Prana
has asked ten local composers to write new pieces for the
ensemble. Hear new works by Marti Epstein, Curtis Hughes, Robert
Kirzinger, Martin Near, Aaron Trant, Ken Ueno, Nick Vines, Julia Werntz,
James Bergin and Hillary Zipper.
Prana will be followed by singer-songwriter Jennifer Greer. Jennifer
Greer's music is an eclectic mix of pop, jazz, and classical
traditions, woven into an emotional and highly rhythmic musical
journey. Inspired by personal experience, dreams, the natural world,
books, film, and sometimes politics, Jennifer's songs seek to find a
mood and enfold the listener inside it. Her distinctive voice which
can soar from earthy and sensual to sweetly lush is showcased in her
new album "the Apiary," which critics are calling "stunning." A true
instrumentalist, she explores a wide range of mood and sound, playing
the piano with an imagination rarely found in pop or folk today. As
a performer, she exudes a passion and joy that is tangible,
shameless, and direct.
This will be a fascinating evening of classical, pop, and jazz music.

Joe Berkovitz is a Boston-based pianist, composer and teacher with a
style spanning many genres, from jazz to medieval music to funk. He
attended New England Conservatory, where he studied with Jaki Byard,
Ran Blake and George Russell among others. He has performed live with

7:00 PM Satellite with Courtney Brown & Kristy Foye

www.myspace.com/thoughtcollection002

Satellite is the name given to the various combinations of Liz
Meredith (viola), Travis Johns (bass) and Gudmundur Steinn
Gunnarsson (guitar). They play improvised music that focuses on the
interaction and amalgamation of electronics, prepared instruments
and extended techniques ranging from deconstructed audio loops at
the verge of silence to dense soundscapes that envelope the senses.
Though all are classically trained, each member has developed
musical vocabularies rooted far outside that of the conservatory
and are as diverse as the locales they hail from - Baltimore, Md.,
Oakland, Ca., and Reykjavik, Iceland, respectively. Formed in the
fall of 2005 at Mills College, Satellite has performed extensively
throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, and are currently
finishing mixes on a new album recorded entirely in the wilderness
of New York?s Hudson River Valley.

Outside of Satellite, we have two more acts slated for the bill, each looking to play for approximately 30 minutes or so. The first addition will be Courtney Brown from Lebanon, NH, performing her one-person electronic cabaret act entitled "Every Night I Lose Control" Her bio is as follows:

Courtney Brown has long harbored aspirations of becoming an Edward Gorey heroine, but her attempts have thus far been foiled. In lieu of her unlikely but tragic demise, she makes strange dark music and fiddles with electronics. Her most recent work, Every Night I Lose Control, is an electronic post-modern cabaret act that explores the ideas of disintegration and failure. Every piece is designed so that she, as a performer, will fail. This show follows the trajectory of her attempts to regain balance and composure in the wreckage. Heavily influenced by tango, Weimar cabaret, and early goth rock, this work explores the danger of performance and ultimately exposes the vulnerabilities of its performer.

Sounds = myspace.com/courtneydbrown

Also on the bill will be a project by Boston-based cellist Kristy Foye

Individual Biographies:

Liz Meredith (b. 1981) is a violist, improviser, and composer
originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Her solo works are
improvisatory in nature, and frequently move towards the outer
limits of musical genres being influenced by rock, electronic, and
contemporary classical music.

Although classically trained, her initial collaborations were in
the realm of string-based rock music, as both a co-founder, and
later working with various bands such as Zigmat and Teletextile.
Liz collaborates regularly with guitarist Cooper Formant in the
band photovoltic, frequently performs with NYC-based group
Teletextile, and is also a member of Satellite: an Oakland-
Baltimore-Reyjavik trio, focusing on electro-acoustic improvised
music. In addition to playing the viola, she has composed concert
works for The Opabinia Quartet and Quartet San Francisco.

Liz received her undergraduate degree from the Berklee College of
Music in Viola Performance: jazz performance/improvisation and Film
Music, and recently completed her Master's degree in Music
Composition from Mills College. While at Mills, Liz studied
composition with Fred Frith, Annie Gosfield, Hilda Paredes, and
viola performance with Hank Dutt.

Gudmunder Steinn Gunnarsson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1982.
Began music studies at the age of seven. In 2005 he graduated from
The Iceland Academy of Arts. There he studied composition with
Úlfar Haraldsson and Hilmar ór Arson as well as performance with
Hilmar Jensson. Currently Gudmundur studies in the M.A. program in
composition in Mills College, where he's studied with Alvin Curran,
Fred Frith and Annie Gosfield. He has attended masterclasses with
Tristan Murail, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Clarence Barlow.

His compositions have been performed at festivals such as U.N.M.
and has been performed by ensembles such as Quartet San Francisco
(US), The Zapolski Quartet (DK), Atón (IS) by members of ensembles
such as Poing (NO), Caput (IS).

Gudmundur Steinn was the musical director of an experimental
animated film named Hidebound, which won a special price for music
at the NUFF young filmmakers festival in Norway. He has also been
active as an improviser and has performed in that context with
musicians such as Steve Hubback, Fred Frith, Andrew D'Angelo, Ad
Peijnenburg, Hilmar Jensson and Skúli Sverrisson.

Travis Johns (b. 1983) writes and performs music that he describes
as an "abstraction of reality." Consisting of processed field
recordings, improvisations and amplified "small sounds," he
attempts to weave a tapestry of experiences, gestures and thoughts
into a singular, enveloping mass of sounds. Often labeled as noise
at first, a more concentrated listen will yield countless paths for
the ear to follow, leading to listening experiences that he hopes
will provide infinite possibilities for interpretation. His music
has been performed extensively throughout the United States and
abroad to a wide variety of audiences, ranging from galleries to
anarchist warehouses to international music festivals. An avid
performer and improviser on electric bass and electronics, he is a
member of the Oakland, Ca. quartet Pink Canoes (with Noah Phillips,
Aram Shelton and Zachary Watkins), Satellite (with Gudmundur Steinn
Gunnarsson and Liz Meredith) and and Vslykon, a collaborative duo
with sound artist Ayako Kataoka.

He holds a B.M. in Technology in Music and Related Arts from the
Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studies conducted with Tom Lopez and
Dr. Hye Kyung Lee and an M.F.A. from Mills College in Electronic
Music and Recording Media, studies conducted with Chris Brown,
Hilda Paredes and Les Stuck. He has participated in residencies at
such places as the Atlantic Center for the Arts, is a frequent
collaborator with Costa Rican visual artist Paulina Velazquez-Solis
and is a founding member of the Thinktank Collective, an
international arts collective focused on the interrelation of sound
and image.

The Music
This concert will feature an evening of standard and original jazz music. Woodard’s guitar style draws from several influences including, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, George Benson and Sonny Rollins. Woodard also takes sounds from styles other than jazz and adapts them to a jazz format.

Here’s what WGBH jazz radio host Eric Jackson has to say about Woodard: “I find Fred’s tone to be warm and inviting, making you want to hear more from him. No matter if he’s playing a ballad, an up tempo tune or an African American spiritual, that warmth shines through.”

Biographies
Fred Woodard (guitar, leader) has performed extensively with his trio in the northeastern and midwestern United States and southeastern Canada, making appearances at events such as the Providence Jazz and Blues Festival, The Discover Jazz Festival, The Kingfield Jazz and Blues Showcase and the Iowa City Jazz Festival. Woodard has released two CD’s Arrival and 1715 on his own label, Ujam Records. Both of these CDs have received extensive airplay and positive reviews as well. Woodard is currently on the faculty at the Roland Hayes School of Music in Roxbury, MA.

Greg Loughman (bass) has been very active on the Boston jazz scene for a number of years. His musical career has also taken him on tours of Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Czech Republic and Japan. He is also a faculty member at the University of Maine in Augusta, ME.

Yoron Israel (drums) has toured and recorded with musicians such as Abbey Lincoln, Ahmad Jamal, Kenny Burrell, Art Farmer, James Williams and he has recorded four CDs as a leader. He is currently assistant chair of the percussion department at Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA.

"reinvent percussion from the bones out, so that drums and other
beat-makers surprise you, throw you off base and draw you into a
vortex of pulses." All About Jazz adds, "this music is meant to be
heard live." The duo employs a wide range of percussion instruments,
including multiple drums, cymbals, marimba, acoustic/electric steel
drum, Chinese opera gongs, prayer bowls, crotales, and sleigh bells.
The haunting "Urban Mantra" goes further by adding live-triggered
samples of voices and analog/digital noise and looping.

Loop 2.4.3 is on tour in support of their highly acclaimed debut
album, "Batterie", which has been called "...a really focused and
thrilling percussive ride that has your attention in the palm of its
hand for every second of it…an unqualified treat from start to finish,
with plenty here to love for fans of The Boredoms and Liars (maybe
Lightning Bolt or Battles as well)." (New-Noise.net). Time Out –
Chicago called the album "Mesmerizing. More freewheeling than
academic, the group mingles taut compositions with a stunning
improvisational sense, weaving pulsing counterpoints on Reichian
marimbas and clattering chimes." See/hear more at www.loop243.com
