Andrew Oliver is a pianist and composer from Portland, Oregon. He also plays cello, trumpet, and drums. He grew up playing classical piano and cello, and eventually switched to jazz at the beginning of high school, when he began taking lessons from Randy Porter, his most influential teacher. He has also studied with Matt Lemmler, Michael Pellera, and Darrell Grant, and has performed with numerous musicians in New Orleans and Portland, including Glen Moore, Maurice Brown, Dick Titterington, Rob Scheps, Irvin Mayfield, and Devin Phillips, with whom he toured West Africa in the fall of 2007 in a cultural exchange program organized by the U.S. State Department. He lived in New Orleans from 2002 until 2005, where he studied jazz at Loyola University and performed as both a bandleader and sideman. He returned to Portland following Hurricane Katrina and is currently active in several groups including Devin Phillips and New Orleans Straight Ahead, the Oregon Jazz Orchestra, the Portland Jazz Composers' Ensemble, which he co-directs, and his own sextet, the Andrew Oliver Sextet, which will be releasing their album "Otis Stomp" on Diatic Records in March 2008.
For this gig in Boston, he will be joined by his regular bassist Eric Gruber as well as Tyson Stubelek, a drummer from Portland with whom he has played for many years who currently lives in Boston. Also joining them will be three excellent Boston musicians who he has played with several times in the past few years. They will be performing Andrew's compositions and arrangements, many of which have been recorded on his album "Otis Stomp" which will be for sale at the gig as well.
