7:00 PM Grupo los Santos (7 PM)/FunkHouse (8:30 PM)

Hailing from New York City, Grupo los Santos have been defining and refining their sound since coming together in 1998 to workshop the substance of the Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and New York City Jazz traditions. Tenor saxophonist Paul Carlon, guitarist Pete Smith, bassist Dave Ambrosio, and drummer William “Beaver” Bausch contribute equally and authoritatively to the vibrant group interplay that defines the distinct Santos sound. No less an elder than late great trombonist/composer Juan Pablo Torres gave his blessing to Grupo los Santos’ originality and unique interpretations of the classic Cuban traditions. The band has also worked with the folkloric rumba group Clave y Guaguancó, as well as members of the famed los Muñequitos de Matanzas, combining jazz, tap, and Cuban rumba. Grupo los Santos just released their second CD, Lo Que Somos Lo Que Sea (What We Are What Will Be), with a triumphant performance Jan. 7th at the Jazz Standard in New York. Featuring ten original compositions, the new release includes forays into Brazilian and Flamenco styles as well continuing to probe the rumba-, timba-, and son-influenced Cuban roots music the group is so enamored of.

“The entire group is at top peak performance, and their sound is flawless. Each song will be a favorite with different listeners.” --Lee Prosser, JazzReview.com

As a sideman, John Funkhouser has shared the stage with such luminaries as Grammy nominees Luciana Souza and Tierney Sutton, fifteen-year-old piano savant Matt Savage, Steve Gadd, Ran Blake, Herb Pomeroy, and the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra. What you need to know about Calvin Johnson:
Based in Olympia, Wash., Calvin's work in underground culture started as a teenage fan volunteering at the local community radio station,
KAOS-FM. He moved on to writing for fanzines, organizing music and film events, playing music in various ill-fated bands. Calvin established K http://www.krecs.com, a pacific northwest oriented media outlet, in 1982.

In 1993 Calvin founded Dub Narcotic, a recording studio, in which he has
documented the work of the Somehow Is and Never Was, such as Mirah, the
Blow, Versus, Built to Spill, Fitz of Depression, Make-Up and Little
Wings. It has also been the incubator of many Calvin experiments in
collaboration and self-expression, such as Beat Happening, Halo Benders
and Dub Narcotic Sound System.

Since 2000 Calvin Johnson has set out into the world, acoustic guitar in
hand, as a solo artist of musical platitudes. His signature baritone,
dry wit, and sexy cardigans have won him many admirers.

02/24 Sunday

7:00 PM Pandelis Karayorgis Trio

http://karayorgis.com

Bassist Jef Charland and drummer Luther Gray, one of the best and most in-demand rhythm sections in Boston, team-up with pianist Pandelis Karayorgis for an adventurous set of mostly original jazz compositions.

Pandelis Karayorgis:
b. Greece. A highly original pianist, since his early dawning in the Boston, Massachusetts, USA, area Karayorgis has attained a considerable international reputation owing to appearances at festivals and tours of clubs in Europe and America. At venues such as these, and on numerous recording dates, he has appeared with artists such as Mat Maneri, Joe Maneri, Ken Vandermark, Tony Malaby, Michael Formanek, John Lockwood and saxophonist Guillermo Gregorio, playing on the latter's Red Cube(d) in a trio which also included Mat Maneri. Karayorgis has also led or co-led his own groups, their albums attracting very favourable critical attention. Critics have drawn attention to the ability of Karayorgis and his musical companions to skate perilously close to the edges of musical catastrophe, the resulting successes being testimony to their flair, skill and technical prowess. As Alex Henderson commented in Jazziz magazine, " . . . Karayorgis is a brave soul who has . . . fashioned a radical sound of his own . . . definitely original . . . undoubtedly worth the ride." References to Thelonious Monk and Lennie Tristano, Cecil Taylor and Andrew Hill sometimes appear in accounts of his playing but these are valid more as reference points than as true stylistic touchstones.

It might be more accurate to suggest that Karayorgis brought to turn-of-the-century jazz piano hints of how those earlier innovators might have played had they been up-and-coming now rather than then. To quote Billy Taylor, in a blindfold test carried out by Bill Milkowski in JazzTimes, "I have no idea who this is but it is really very clever, very refreshing." Clearly, Karayorgis is intent on pushing the envelope of improvised music, and is very capable of achieving his aims.

Luther Gray:
Drummer Luther Gray was born March 10, 1972 in New Orleans, LA. His family moved to Washington, D.C. where, as a teenager, he started playing drums in punk rock bands. Though largely self-taught, his musical training involved drum lessons from Kim Martin, Larry Bright, Steve Bagby, and Mickey Newman. In 1995 he graduated the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Music, after which he taught privately and performed in the Washington , D.C. area with, among others, Butch Warren, Cecil Payne, Webster Young, Tsunami, Liquorice, Peter Edelman, Jenny Toomey, Bob Butta, and Buck Hill. Since moving to Boston he has resumed teaching private drum lessons and has played with Joe Morris, Jay Hoggard, Joe McPhee, Timo Shanko, Cameron Brown, Allan Chase, Joseph Daly, Sabir Mateen, Roy Campbell, Ida, Geoff Farina, Andrew White, Rob Brown, Bill Lowe, Greg Abate, Raqib Hassan, Bill Pierce, Mitch Seidman, Steve Swell, Joe Beck, Fred Anderson, Ken Vandermark and many others. In addition to his performing schedule Luther teaches art and music at an after-school program for elementary school children.

Jef Charland:
A native of Gardner MA., Jef’s first instrument was trumpet. Later he studied guitar at Berklee with Jon Damian and played in the house band at Wally’s in Boston. After graduating from Berklee he picked up the bass and has become a fixture on the jazz scene playing regularly with the Masked Marvels, the Andy Voelker Trio, Gypsy Schaeffer and at jazz jams at the Center for Arts in Natick, Costello’s and Matt Murphy’s Pub.

7:30 PM Johnson/Fleder Sub-Trio

Second Set with: World Champion DJ Shiftee (turntables), Dan Carpel(bass)
Composed of Collin Johnson (saxophones) and Michael Fleder (drums), the
sub-trio seamlessly blends deconstructed jazz standards with free
improvisation and original compositions. They strive for chaotic logic in
their music, adhering to the idea that music is sound; sound is rhythm;
rhythm is melody; melody is harmony; harmony is a soft-boiled egg; and one
should not play on an empty stomach.

Collin hails from Salt Lake City, Utah. He started playing the saxophone
when he was 12 and began playing real music at age 16 under the tutelage
of Brian Booth. He currently studies with Charlie Kohlhase and plays
baritone sax in the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble.

Mike brings the ruckus from New York. He has studied Ghanaian drumming
in Ghana; Senegalese drumming at MIT with Lamine Toure; and existentialism
with Andrew Barr (The Slip). He plays in the Swedish Jazz Spectrum (along
with Collin); the Pirana flamenco group; a duo with DJ Shiftee; and
Rambax, the MIT Senegalese Drumming Ensemble.

10:00 PM Andrei Matorin Quartet

Band leader, violinist and composer, Andrei Matorin is one of the
most creative young musicians in modern jazz. His style combines the
spontaneity, energy and improvisation of jazz with the compositional
integrity and sensitivity of classical music. He is the voice of a
new generation of jazz-violin.

"[Andrei] has shown remarkable talent and great potential in
classical music and jazz.[...] He has been a passionate improviser
who can add beautiful color and energy to my compositions"

~ Tiger Okoshi

After a sell-out show in January, Andrei returns to the Lily Pad and collaborates with some of
Berklee's top talent: Takeshi Ohbayashi-piano, Daniel Ori-bass, Dan
Pugach-drums. Aside from their high level of technique and tasteful
sophistication, they bring a variety of influences from their
respective countries. The quartet's focus is on group dialogue,
improvisation, and spontaneity played with an extreme dynamic and
emotional range.
