What you need to know about Calvin Johnson:
Based in Olympia, Wash., Calvin's work in underground culture started as a teenage fan volunteering at the local community radio station,
KAOS-FM. He moved on to writing for fanzines, organizing music and film events, playing music in various ill-fated bands. Calvin established K http://www.krecs.com, a pacific northwest oriented media outlet, in 1982.

In 1993 Calvin founded Dub Narcotic, a recording studio, in which he has
documented the work of the Somehow Is and Never Was, such as Mirah, the
Blow, Versus, Built to Spill, Fitz of Depression, Make-Up and Little
Wings. It has also been the incubator of many Calvin experiments in
collaboration and self-expression, such as Beat Happening, Halo Benders
and Dub Narcotic Sound System.

Since 2000 Calvin Johnson has set out into the world, acoustic guitar in
hand, as a solo artist of musical platitudes. His signature baritone,
dry wit, and sexy cardigans have won him many admirers.

TEENBEAT BIO:
Teenbeat is an independently owned, operated and distributed label which
has been in existence for over 20 years. Teenbeat helped ignite the
American indie label revolution. Known for its DC based indie-guitar-pop
and bands such as Unrest, Tuscadero, Versus, and Air Miami. Teenbeat has
also released records by experimentalists Gastr Del Sol, and 1960's
icons The Feminine Complex. Unrest's Mark Robinson formed the label
while in high school with friends Andrew Beaujon [Riley] (Eggs), Tim
Moran (Unrest), Ian Zack (Thirsty Boys), & Phil Krauth.
Over the past two decades, Teenbeat has become internationally known.
Teenbeat's current roster includes FLIN FLON, +/- (PLUS/MINUS), hollAnd,
TRUE LOVE ALWAYS, UNREST, BOSSANOVA, MAYBE IT'S RENO and many more.

MARK ROBINSON BIO:
EDUCATION

WAKEFIELD HIGH SCHOOL 1985
Infamous (or un-famous) Arlington, Virginia school where Mark met Phil
Krauth and Tim Moran and formed the seminal punk/indie band, Unrest. He
also made friends with Andrew Beaujon (Eggs), and Ian Zack (The Thirsty
Boys).

TEENBEAT RECORDS
The record label that Mark started when he was a mere sixteen years old.
His first release was a compilation tape featuring his friends’ bands
from his high school. Tapes were sold to classmates for a mere one
dollar each. February 23, 1985 is Teenbeat’s birthday.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

UNREST 1983 to 1994
Teenbeat’s most successful band was started by Mark and released five
albums and a multitude of singles. They played at Lollapalooza in 1993
and turned down a Nirvana opening slot later that year. Their Imperial
f.f.r.r. album was voted one of the best of the year by Spin magazine in
1992. Hole has covered Unrest’s “Yes She Is My Skinhead Girl” on occasion.

AIR MIAMI 1994 to present
After Unrest, Bridget Cross (Unrest) and Mark formed this power-pop
quartet with Mike Fellows (Rites of Spring) and Lauren Feldsher
(Mascott). One album was release in 1995 by Teenbeat/4AD entitled Me Me Me..

GRENADINE 1991 to 1998
Jenny Toomey and Mark formed this project soon after their Lots of Pop
Losers festival in the Fall of 1991. Rob Christiansen from Eggs and
Sisterhood of Convoluted Thinkers joined a year later on the drums. They
recorded two albums, one (Goya) with Kramer from Bongwater and another
(Nopolitos) with Warn Defever of His Name Is Alive.

WMUC radio
While at the University of Maryland in the late ‘80s, Mark spinned vinyl
at this vital college radio station. It was here that he met Bridget
Cross who was one of his on-air callers. DJ Dave McDuff was the first to
play Teenbeat vinyl on the radio in 1985.

FLIN FLON 1997-present
Mark’s love of Joy Division and Factory Records was particularly evident
when he formed Flin Flon with Nattles (Cold Cold Hearts) and Matt
Datesman (True Love Always). They have released three albums of
mathy-bass and drums oriented rock, so far.
