It's hard to put your finger on what makes Sydney, Australia's Darren Hanlon so damn good. It could of course be his songs' undeniable catchiness, or his brilliant lyrics, exploring everything from intricate emotional politics to mundane things like bicycle kickstands, crossword puzzles, or squash (the sport). Or it could just be the entire Hanlon world- charming, naive, and just a little bit different. A one-time contributor to Australian indiepopsters the Lucksmiths, in the last two years Darren himself has toured the world, playing with the likes of Billy Bragg, and opening for the Magnetic Fields on their last US tour.

Many of the same accolades could be heaped on Boston ex-pat Don Lennon, who follows in the foot steps of Jonathan Richman, tossing off polished, poppy, often laugh-out-loud-funny songs about parties, celebrity, and pop culture. But to say that's all his songs are about ignores just how moving they can be as well. Somehow both famous and obscure, Don has won over audiences all over the world with his wry charm, dry wit, and, also, undeniably catchy melodies and brilliant lyrics.

Even those who think they've heard it all haven't heard anything like Casey Dienel. Matching prodigious musical talent with a lyrical point-of-view that's wild and odd and sharp as brass tacks, she'll be your new favorite piano-slinger in town. A thousand quirky songwriters couldn't imitate her style if they tried.
