06/07 Thursday

7:00 PM The Johnson/Fleder Sub-Trio

Composed of Collin Johnson (saxophones) and Michael Fleder (drums), the
sub-trio is not the kind of group that tries to sound hip by associating its
music with famous jazz musicians. We might say that we sound like John
Coltrane and Elvin Jones or the essence of the Sun Ra Arkestra ... but we
don't. The sub-trio was formed when our third member disappeared into the
wilds of France, and we tired of playing endless Real Book gigs.

Collin hails from Salt Lake City, Utah. He started playing the saxophone
when he was 12 and began playing real music at age 16 under the tutelage
of Brian Booth. He currently studies with Charlie Kohlhase and plays
baritone sax in the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble.

Mike brings the ruckus from New York. He has studied Ghanaian drumming
in Ghana; Senegalese drumming at MIT with Lamine Toure; and existentialism
with Andrew Barr (The Slip). He plays in the Swedish Jazz Spectrum (along
with Collin); the Pirana flamenco group; a duo with DJ Shiftee; and Rambax,
the MIT Senegalese Drumming Ensemble.
