10/01 Sunday

8:00 PM JAZZ FOR ROCK FANS

$5-7 donation.

"Make way for this highly innovative jazz trio with exceptional substance and incredible musicality. Proving the fear wrong that dabbling in other genres dilutes the purity of the focus, Katahdin's Edge sneaks and slides in tastes from middle eastern scales, to classical-tinged, expansive phrasing to a fervent groove that bumpity bumps along after the free-spirited melodies. From there, they turn the corner into darker and more introspective pockets of reflective, inward-turned pieces, delving into the seeds of harmony, flourishing with rushes of untamed emotion and human conviction. No doubt, this album is a must for the modern jazz seeker." - CDBaby.com

Attaboy + strings (from Denmark!), theSuite Unraveling and Hamir Atwal

about Attaboy + strings
"…music which is above genre, pluralistic and minimalist… A
delightfully surprising acquaintance."
-Ole Nimand, JazzSpecial

Four young musicians from Sweden, Denmark and England/France formed
Attaboy in Copenhagen, 2001, to explore the sounds of chordless music.
Their style has evolved into lyrical jazz that dares to include punk
attitude, simple melodies and a chaotic pop sensibility.
Improvisation is an important part of the music, and poetry that
speaks to the trials of everyday life—sung both in Swedish and
English—is a central element of Attaboy's style and sound.
The group is a strong part of the Danish jazz scene and has
performed jazz festivals in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Berlin and on
Swedish and Danish national radio programs. Their debut album,
Oværkliga Saker, was released to critical acclaim on Chairless Records
in 2004.
In 2005, Attaboy travelled to Canada for three weeks to compose,
play concerts and record new material. During their time abroad, the
band met three American violin players whose sound and energy inspired
the music into new colours and textures. Their return to the United
States is the second chapter in an ongoing dialogue between American
improvisers and Danish jazz.

about theSuiteUnraveling
"...As much about artistic vision as about a groove you can feel. At
times soft and plaintive, surrounded by the sounds of multiple singing
bowls, or, for extra effect, the bassist's voice, the music could
change gears and grow into a powerful wall of sound. [Lily] Maase has
not stood still over the past year and this music, with this band, was
extremely emotionally as well as cerebrally rewarding."
-Budd Kopman, AllAboutJazz

Guitarist, composer and mixed media artist Lily Maase first fell in
love with the guitar at the age of seven. In the decades since, she
performed and recorded regularly throughout the Southwestern United
States before a life-changing trip to Canada prompted her to sell
everything she owned and move to New York—guitar in hand—to become a
fearless champion of her own music. Lily and her critically
acclaimed quintet—dubbed "seriously remarkable new music" by the
Weekly Alibi—have presented performances and master classes from one
end of North America to the other, with stops as varied as
Albuquerque, Manhattan and Montreal. The band released a live EP in
mid-2006 and will release Songs from the Elastic Frontier—a double CD
featuring nine compositions and cameo appearances from some of the
world's finest electronic artists—in January 2007.
Though theSuiteUnraveling is a vehicle for Lily's own compositions,
the unique voices of her co-conspirators provide the energy necessary
to bring the music to life. Alto and soprano saxophonist Peter Van
Huffel, who holds degrees from the University of Toronto and the
Manhattan School of Music, is a tremendous improviser and worthy
composer in his own right. Termed "a truly remarkable player" by
renowned saxophonist Chris Potter, Peter's powerful sound and
improvisation have had a profound impact on some seasoned ears. Tenor
saxophonist Evan Smith is a Dallas native schooled in Montreal and an
active member of Brooklyn's creative music scene. Two of Lily's
fellow University of North Texas alumni, drummer Fred Kennedy and
bassist Matt Wigton, have traveled the world with David Krakauer, Zach
Brock and the Coffee Achievers, Kenosha Kid and many more.

about Hamir Atwal:
Hamir Atwal has been playing the drums since the age of 4 and was soon
performing throughout the San Francisco Bay Area regularly at the age
of 10. In 2004, he was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious
Berklee College of Music and moved to Boston. Hamir now performs with
pianist Michael Palma, the Hal Crook Quartet, Dave Santoro, and
bassist Julian Smith. Hamir's own group will play the first set of
the Cambridge engagement and features Michael Palma on Piano and
Julian Smith on bass.

10/31 Tuesday

8:00 PM

Hello to everyone who has ever been to the Lily Pad, written me about getting a gig, or anyone who is trying to get a gig and still hasn't heard back,

Here's the update. Today was a very good day for us. We got a building permit. This is something we have been waiting for for what seems like an eternity. Honestly, I don't even know how long it has been. In our efforts to become a legitimate and safe venue we have had to stay closed for some time now. We have gotten in touch with all the proper people to start on the work. The place is a construction site and unrecognizable to the old concert go-er and performers too.

Right now what needs to be done are just a few more things. here's the order

1- install new fire alarm system
2- re-wire the lights
3- pass inspection for these things
4- put in a new handicap accessible bathroom
5- fireproof the ceilings
6- pass inspection
7- sweep and mop

So, the end, or new beginning is near. I want to sincerely thank everyone for supporting us in anyway possible and believing in us when we weren't sure if we believed in ourselves. I'm really looking forward to talking to you all again and seeing you on a nightly basis at the shows. Lastly, while I'm at it, I want to apologize for being difficult to get in touch with. Also a huge apology to anyone who had a cancelled show.

when we reopen we will post it on our website lily-pad.net and at that point I will resume booking. This should happen probably in the next 2-4 weeks. Please hold off on all booking inquiries until then. Also at that point if you wrote me and still haven't heard back, please write me again.

Thanks for listening and for all y'alls patience even if it ran out. We will make it up to you.

Sincerely,
Andrew DiMola
