Ghorar Deem Express
Wembley
Laura Imhoff

Missy (singer for the garage band juggernaut Wembley) and Andrew (bassist
and arranger for the bicoastal mini-orchestra Ghorar Deem Express) were
sitting around their apartment in JP wondering what to do about their
roommate Stanislav's birthday. Then- an idea: create a show in which each
band performs a song from one album of Stan's choice. Stan agreed and then
had the audacity to select Seasons in the Abyss by Slayer.

Somewhat-random domestic groupings leading to unexpected, quixotic
performance can also explain the original spawning of the Ghorar Deem. In an
altogether different apartment, in Amsterdam, in 2002, Andrew and his
roommates Rachel and Nader, after posturing that Rach could play accordion
Nader could vocalize in his native tongues of Bengali and Italian, created
(after recruiting a half-dozen neighbors and cohorts) the Deem. Since then
Andrew and Rachel became a crack songwriting duo, the band migrated to
Boston, Nader had a string of manic relapses (he's currently
institutionalized in France and will hopefully return for the big tour in
August (for the moment hisItalian-Bengali spasms are spread across the
band)), and the second album was mostly recorded and slated for release in
late '06. This will be their fourth infestation of the Pad.

Wembley is a super fun band from Brockton, MA. Their music is loud and crazy
and full of energy. Wembley is made up of some very nice boys and a very
nice girl. They write fun songs and practice in a smelly garage. They have
been playing together in the garage since last fall. They play nice.
Everyone has a good time. You will love them!

Laura Imhoff is a local singer/songwriter with a voice that some say sounds
like Joss Stone, Norah Jones, with a flare of Stevie Wonder. She grew up on
a small farm in Massachusetts and now lives in the city of Boston. Music is
a large part of her life. She uses music as an outlet; this is quite
recognizable in her lyrics. They are full of emotion and feeling and are
influenced by the people and what is going on in her own life. And more
importantly, she loves nothing more then to share that love with the people
that surround her. (We'll see how she does extracting love from Slayer.)

Deer
[myspace]

Notes and Scratches make little songs overflowing with trumpets
and shakers and saws and claps and singing and double basses and
organs and pedal steel and drums hit very hard and pianos played light
in the later hours. Featuring current and/or former members of the
Treatment, Where the Moon Came From, the autumn-waking, the
Sleeptights, the Fruit Bats, the Delta Still, the Shiny Ghosts. The
songs are celebrations of both joy and trouble, getting older
gracelessly, dancing shamelessly, loving recklessly and sometimes
regretting all of it, entirely.

Empty House Cooperative is improvised music with David Michael
Curry and friends, most often including Jonah Sacks, Thalia Zedek,
Chris Brokaw, and others.

In 1993 Brian Michael Roff came up from NJ and met some
friends. He played music with them and met more friends. The group of
friends grew and became known as the Deer. They wove tangled webs.

10:00 PM THE GOOD ANNA/THE BLIZZARDS

rob chalfen & subconsciouscafe new chamber music presents

THE GOOD ANNA(Nottingham, UK) + THE BLIZZARDS (Brooklyn)

THE GOOD ANNA :
The Good Anna is a free improvisation duo with a ferocious emotional
intensity, simultaneously playing out of the rock and jazz tradition while
creating something new, totally wild, free and improvised.
GRAHAM JONES - guitar
PATRICK FARMER - prepared drums, amplified objects

THE BLIZZARDS :
Blizzards are a minimalist informed avant-pop trio of musicians usually
dabbling in the worlds of free-jazz, noise, stewed electronics,
psychedelic-prog, blissed drones, and imaginary time music.
ADAM KRINEY – drums
ANTHONY LEBRON – guitar, vocals, electronics
HEKTOR FONTANEZ – guitar, vocals, electronics

Production: Rob Chalfen - robchalfen@hotmail.com

bio & press :
The Good Anna is a free improvisation duo made up of Graham (20) on guitar,
and Patrick (22) on prepared drums and amplified objects. The Good Anna came
together by chance after Patrick returned from a 6 month stay in India,
where he was taught classical North Indian Tabla by Pandit Nayan Ghosh. As a
result of his stay in the East, Patrick began to think about treating the
drums more as textural surfaces rather than just an outlet for rhythm.
During the same period Graham was taking a contrasting path to Patrick’s
geographical excursions, but had equally cocooned himself in study. He began
absorbing a vast array of new music, furiously digesting jazz harmonic
theory, performing locally to trial run fresh ideas and teaching to make
ends meet, all the while constantly composing and improvising. They united
in Spring 2005 with a burgeoning interest in spontaneous performance and a
mutual appreciation of music such as Milford Graves, AMM, LaMonte Young and
John Coltrane. Holed up in a tiny garage in the Midlands recording all
sessions on a weather beaten Dictaphone, they set about applying the
knowledge they had garnered over the past year to hone their abilities for
immediate expression.

The Good Anna have now relocated to Nottingham, where an incredibly healthy
underground music scene has provided fresh catalyst to their music growth.
They now exist as a constantly shifting and expanding creative outlet,
simultaneously taking an erudite, theoretical slant on improvisation whilst
retaining the ability to deliver raw, explosive exclamations. Two live CDR
recordings have been released by Good Name for a Racehorse, a studio
recording entitled Full of Beans on Sharks and Pfennigs, and more in the
pipeline on labels such as Curor and Freenoise.

Sean quickly established himself as a comic with strong
improvisational skills who was not afraid to experiment with the
traditional stand-up form. He soon found his home and honed his voice

An Evening of Folk and Drone Studies for Guitar

JACK ROSE (VHF, ECLIPSE)
GLENN JONES (STRANGE ATTRACTORS)
GEOFF MULLEN (ENTSCHULDIGEN, LAST VISIBLE DOG)

About the musicians:

JACK ROSE - Member of the legendary drone/noise/folk group Pelt since
1995. Pelt along with Tower Recordings, UN, Charalambides was one of
the early groups who forged a new sound that combined free improv,
drone, traditional folk music in the early to mid nineties, later
coined "weird new america" by the Wire's David Keenan in the early
oughts. Since 2001 Rose has pursued his own path in the solo acoustic
guitar solo genre as invented by John Fahey. Like Fahey, Rose draws
his inspiration from early rural American musicians like Charley
Patton, Skip James and Blind Blake. In addition to those influences
he gleans inspiration from Robbie Basho, Ry Cooder, Zia M. Dagar, La
Monte Young, Terry Riley. Jack incorporates all of these elements
into his own idiosyncratic style and it is his sound and his alone.
Since 2002 he has released 3 critically acclaimed LP's for the Eclipse
label, 2 cd's for VHF, and has appeared on several important
compilations documenting the new folk underground.

http://www.vhfrecords.com/jackrose/

Most folks know GLENN JONES as guitarist extraordinaire for Cul de
Sac, in which his idiosyncratic blend of surf, Middle Eastern,
Americana and acid guitar innovations are a signature of the band's
much-ballyhooed sound. A scholar of sorts of the acoustic steel string
tradition, Jones has written extensively on the subject, as can be
found in the wave of Robbie Basho and John Fahey reissues on Fantasy
(not to mention the great essay on Fahey that accompanies his final
album, Red Cross). Jones befriended his idol John Fahey in the
mid-70's, eventually collaborating with him via Cul de Sac (The
Epiphany of Glenn Jones, Thirsty Ear 1996). Recently, Jones released
his debut solo album. This is the Wind That Blows it Out - Solos for 6
& 12 String Guitar is a collection of stylistically ambitious, utterly
sublime acoustic steel-string compositions, proving beyond a shred of
doubt that Jones is of a rare class of modern compositional guitarists
in today's burgeoning avant folk scene.

http://www.strange-attractors.com/catalog/saah024.html

GEOFF MULLEN'S debut release, "thrtysxtrllnmnfstns" contains a series
of delicate thunderstorms scored for string instruments, bias-altered
amplification and analog circuitry that at once recall both the
slow-arc Americana of the Vanguard and Takoma labels and the
contemporary guitar-based minimalism and drone-work of fine folks such
as Rafael Toral and Fennesz. ""Geoff's first demo... may very well be
the best demo i've ever received... for myriad reasons; for one it
doesn't sound wholly like any one other thing i've ever heard..." -
Keith Fullerton Whitman
