1:00 PM The Underground Jazz String Quartet

A Classical Appetizer:
The UNDERGROUND JAZZ STRING QUARTET is traditional string quartet that
plays jazz arrangements and original compositions which include
improvisation. The group was founded in 1991 by four string students at
the Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusetts, and performed
throughout New England and on the West Coast.
Two of the original members, violinists Paula Zeitlin and Tomoko Iwamoto,
are joined by violist Lisa Kempski and cellist Stephanie Wingfield, in
performing pieces which meld the string quartet sound with contemporary
jazz string techniques and improvisation. The UGSQ members see
themselves as part of a long and rich history of jazz string playing,
from early blues through Joe Venuti to the Turtle Island String Quartet
to Regina Carter.

MOPDTK is a recent group formed in NYC. In this
ensemble, I attempt to write compositions that reflect
the strange relationship I feel to jazz history. On
the one hand, I grew up listening to and still love
traditional jazz, but on the other, I am deeply
disturbed and disgusted with its current state of
turpitude. This music, instead of attempting to
reconcile these two simultaneous opinions, pits them
against each other creating music that both blatantly
mocks and reveres the jazz tradition. Perhaps
Dada-Jazz?

Moth
Opening up the show will be Friendly Bears.
$9.

Toby Driver-
Best known as the frontman, guitarist and composer for progressive/avant metal band Maudlin of the Well and their new incarnation Kayo Dot, Toby Driver has consistently proven himself to be one of the most unique songwriters in modern music. His debut solo album In the L..L..Library Loft was created as a means of expressing his more out there ideas which he feels wouldn't have been compatible with Kayo Dot. Most of his bandmates appear as guests on the album, which focuses more on bleak ambience than metal (despite some extremely noisy sections), effectively sounding completely unique and extremely avant-garde. Tonight, he performs a long-form violin and electric guitar duet which was originally composed for an August 2005 premiere at John Zorn’s downtown NYC art space, The Stone. “60 Metonymies” draws from the influence of Feldman, Messiaen, and Tibet, and features inimitable Kayo Dot violinist Mia Matsumiya.

Flittermice of Eld is an ensemble made up of electric
guitar, electric bass, and live electronics. Their
music is a scathing blend of modern composition, free
improvisation, noise and raw black metal. Intricate,
virtuosic composed parts occur in tandem with
improvised electronics to create a music of chaotic
yet controlled savagery.

Moth
moth is a duo consisting of sam hillmer (zs/b-keepers)
and ben gerstein (matt maneri/tony malaby) playing
saxophone and trombone respectively... moth offer
acoustic drone/noise imporovisations that engage free
jazz, euro avant, and field recordings from hither and
thither equally... performances are explosive and
short and always happen off the stage in the middle of
everything where ever it is whenever it is...

Marcello Pellitteri, drums

3play+ returns to the Lily Pad with its unique brand of space-jazz, where freedom and interplay rule.

3play+ began as a weekly jam session and brings that relaxed, spontaneous energy to live performance. The band “demonstrates a breadth of vision and diversity” where “the stylistic territory ranges from free-improv space jam to reggae to straight-ahead swing to even eighth-note rock to jazz waltz” and even “includes a beautiful and offbeat cover of Dylan's "The Times They Are A’Changin'."

3play+ trumpeter Phil Grenadier lays his “luminous free-flowing constructs” over the “ferocious, metronomic intensity” of Lello Molinari’s bass lines. Pianist Josh Rosen “evokes a refreshingly relaxed openness…yet burns with the best.” In this the case, the best is virtuoso drummer Marcello Pellitteri, a "wonderful musician” as Gary Burton put it, “one of the most talented to come along in a long time".

Please join 3play+ for an evening of free improvisation, original compositions, deconstructed standards and the occasional cover tune.

currently touring to support her debut release,

"Founded by harmonica innovator, Jason Rosenblatt, and named for the traditional fur hat worn by Chassidic Jews, Shtreiml blends elements of klezmer, gypsy music and jazz to create a vibrant sound that is at once Eastern European Folk Music and Down-Home Blues. Shtreiml's debut album, Harmonica Galitzianer, nominated for a Montreal Independent Music Award for Best World Music Album 2003, showcases Rosenblatt's unique approach to playing the 10-hole diatonic harmonica or "blues harp." One of a handful of people in the world who can play the diatonic harmonica chromatically, Rosenblatt uses recently devised techniques pioneered by harmonica master Howard Levy, to fit the instrument generally associated with the blues into an Eastern European context."

Boston-area CD release celebration

Ron Horton, trumpet

Dave Phillips, bass

Accordionist Will Holshouser's trio has an intimate ensemble sound that is
somewhere between jazz, folk music and chamber music.  His compositions draw
on both sweet and sour flavors.  Designed for this unusually spare
instrumentation, the razor-sharp arrangements explore a wide dynamic range
with plenty of room for improvisation.  Ron Horton's broad palette of
trumpet timbres, Dave Phillips' rich bowed bass, and Holshouser's
rhythmically driving accordion make up the trio's sound.  They will
celebrate the release of their new CD "Singing to a Bee," recorded live in
Portugal, on the Clean Feed label.  This is a rare visit to the Boston area
for the trio which is based in New York, and a homecoming for Will
Holshouser who grew up in Cambridge.

the critique of pure reason presents

Beirut
with special guests

Advance tickets available (cash only!) at twisted village.

...These songs come from a 19-year-old multi-instrumentalist from
Albuquerque named Zach Condon.... Condon's baritone voice is
beautiful, delivered with the kind of world weariness that you don't
expect a teenager to feel, let alone convey with such honesty. His
melodies are a perfect match for the old Balkan-inspired arrangements;
there's no shortage of ukuleles and mandolins, not to mention pianos,
accordions, violins and marching band-styled percussion. I guess it
shouldn't be a surprise that Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeremy Barnes (who
also plays in A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and Heather Trost (also of A Hawk
and a Hacksaw) are among the guest musicians. But this album is
clearly Condon's baby, inspired from his earlier travels through
Europe. It's not actually until more than halfway through the record
that you really detect any modern influences; the toy synthesizer
percolating underneath his deep waver in "Scenic Word" will make the
ears of any Magnetic Fields fan perk up.

It's been eight years since Mangum brought us Neutral Milk Hotel's
swan song, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, and then subsequently went
into hiding. Though Condon eschews Mangum's fuzzy folk and surreal
imagery for the somber sounds of the former Eastern bloc, I can't help
but listen to Gulag Orkestar and not be reminded of the first time I
heard those shambolic horns and felt that indescribable yearning
emotion in Neutral Milk's opus. Beirut's debut is obviously no means
its sequel, but it's the closest thing that we may ever get. [GH:
