3play+ with special guest George Garzone!
George Garzone, tenor sax
Phil Grenadier, trumpet
Josh Rosen, piano
Lello Molinari, bass
Marcello Pellitteri, drums
3play+ returns to the Zeitgeist with its unique brand of space-jazz, where freedom and interplay rule. Tonight, in a very special performance, 3play will be joined by sax great George Garzone!
A powerhouse improvisational master, George Garzone has appeared on over 20 recordings. He’s a founding member of the amazing improvisational trio "The Fringe," a band that has been playing the best free jazz on the planet since 1972! Garzone’s credits include touring or recording with Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Barron, John Pattitucci, Bill Stewart, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Tom Harrell, Lenny White, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Gary Peacock, Dave Holland, and Dave Liebman, and countless others.
3play+ began as a weekly jam session and brings that relaxed, spontaneous energy to live performance. The band “demonstrates a breadth of vision and diversity” where “the stylistic territory ranges from free-improv space jam to reggae to straight-ahead swing to even eighth-note rock to jazz waltz” and even “includes a beautiful and offbeat cover of Dylan's "The Times They Are A’Changin'."
Trumpeter Phil Grenadier lays his “luminous free-flowing constructs” over the “ferocious, metronomic intensity” of Lello Molinari’s bass lines. Pianist Josh Rosen “evokes a refreshingly relaxed openness…yet burns with the best.” In this the case, the best is virtuoso drummer Marcello Pellitteri, a "wonderful musician” as Gary Burton put it, “one of the most talented to come along in a long time".
Please join 3play+ for an evening of free improvisation, original compositions, deconstructed standards and the occasional cover tune.

On the first Friday of every month, new, uncharted worlds at the frontiers of free improvisation and the avant-garde will be trespassed and ruined for future generations.
The series was founded in March 2004 to present concerts that explore the crossroads between composition and improvisation in an informal atmosphere conducive to the enjoyment of both aficionados of creative music and the first-time listener. Each concert is produced by New England Conservatory's Callithumpian Consort, an eclectic contemporary music ensemble led by pianist/NEC professor Stephen Drury, with support from the Massachusetts Cultural and Cambridge Arts Councils. New this spring is The Improvisation Pool, curated as part of the program by improvising multi-instrumentalist Jorrit Dijkstra. Special guests are invited to join the Callithumpian Consort in exploring different improvisation strategies, inspired by the evening’s composed pieces.

Gabrielle Agachiko - Vocals
Jeff Friedman - Guitar
Paul Engle - Bass
Brett Campbell - Drums
"Buck Moon features the songwriting and singing of Gabrielle (Riley)
Agachiko, who returns to the Boston music scene after a decade in the
western Massachusetts countryside. Gabrielle's songs reflect the
journey from her home in Kenya through an education in England,
conservatory studies in New York, jazz gigs in Paris and dues-paying
in the Boston rock world. Her lyrics are poetic, smart and
thoughtful; her vocals can soar, sooth or sear, by turn, remaining
always impassioned and straight from the heart.
Gabrielle achieved a measure of notoriety in the early 90s with The Atom
Said, whose guitarist Reeves Gabrels left the band for David Bowie's
Tin Machine. Now, in Buck Moon, she collaborates with guitarist Jeff
Friedman, a world-class arranger with Carla Bley, Steve Swallow and
others, and a player who knows no boundaries between rock, jazz and
soul. The bedrock-solid and propulsive rhythm section consists of
versatile bassist Paul Engle and drummer Brett Campbell, the
powerhouse behind Boston's lounge-surf-psychedelic quintet Seks Bomba."

8:00 PM THE CLAUDIA QUINTET
John Hollenbeck: composition/drums/percussion

Drew Gress: acoustic bass
Chris Speed: clarinet/tenor sax
Matt Moran: vibraphone
"What the hell is it?" (Jazz Times)
The Claudia Quintet is proof positive that the pessimists were wrong: jazz is not dead, despite being embalmed by major labels and confined by some musicians to dead ends. In the works of this sensational NY-based, 'jazz and beyond' ensemble, jazz has broken through its rigid shell and been reborn in shimmering and beautifully alluring new form. It lives and breathes in music that melds influences from classical minimalism, new music composition, and progressive and post-rock with an astonishingly fresh jazz sensibility. Whatever one wants to call their music, it has very striking original, unique and attractive qualities. This is a slowly unfolding album; group leader/drummer/composer John Hollenbeck has specifically stated that this album is "...a 'listener's record' - a record that might not make perfect sense when individual tracks are listened to randomly on one's ipod shuffle or on a writer's deadline.... In the end, despite despite cultural pressure to create an instant "hit", I had to listen to my inner voice and go for this - whatever you want to call it - (is it a concept album?)...an album that I hope will cater at the very least to the deep, patient listener." In addition to Hollenbeck, the band has four other superb musicians: Drew Gress (double bass), Matt Moran (vibraphone), Ted Reichman (accordion) and Chris Speed (tenor sax and clarinet). Their previous release, "I, Claudia" was a huge critical and sales success, even reaching the top 15 jazz albums played in the US, according to CMJ, a major industry guide! es success, even reaching the top 15 jazz albums played in the US, according to CMJ, a major industry guide!
“The Claudia Quintet creates a fresh, distinctive sound while it obliterates barriers between jazz, classical and progressiverock.”-DownBeat.

$5
Two of Portland, ME's very finest up-and-coming solo performers, Cat and
Mouse Records (www.catandmouserecords.com) artists Moses Atwood and Steven
Williams make their Cambridge debuts.
Moses Atwood (8pm) (www.mosesatwood.com) is an explosive songwriter drawing
heavily from classic blues, gospel, soul, and folk to create his own fresh
approach to Americana/Folk music. A brilliant, classically trained guitar
player, and powerful tenor vocalist, Moses' music moves with an aching
sorrow and beauty and an has an almost tragic, compelling quality.
Steven Williams (9pm) (www.stevenwilliamsmusic.com) plays complexly layered,
melody driven, loop-based acoustic pop, with strummed, picked, percussed,
and bowed guitar tracks looped into detailed and beautiful compositions
created live on-the-fly, ala Andrew Bird or perhaps M Ward. Steven's music
mashes together the genres of folk, indie pop, baroque, math rock, and
slowcore, into a unique blend of detailed music that scarcely seems possible
from a single acoustic guitar and lone tenor voice.

Quick Reply
21-year-old composer and vocalist Leah Randazzo is a naturally gifted performer of uncommon charisma who knows how to bring an audience to its feet with her sultry voice and high-energy stage performance. Her original compositions, described as jazz-infused R&B and funk, are sophisticated songs of genuine poignance and passion that are getting serious attention from veteran songwriters, composers, and producers. The Leah Randazzo Group formed in the spring of 2005 and performs regularly in the Western Mass area. Their performance at the Lily Pad will be the first of their summer tour of the East coast.
